Quarrier Logo Vote

May 11, 2014 by Matt Larson, Big Sioux Media

The ballot is ready!  The culmination of a nearly two-year process to update the Quarrier mascot is upon us. Through the efforts of students and professionals alike, there are five options for Quarrier fans to choose from. Now, we need help from Quarrier Nation.  Here’s a little snippet about each:

#1 – The strength of this mascot is very obvious.  He is moving forward with confidence and power.  His clean lines and rounded shape along with a modern font above the rocks makes him appealing to the eye.

#2 – The sharpness of the pick-axe provides a nice contrast with the ring holding our school name. This chiseled Quarrier seems as strong as stone and ready to go to work.

#3 – He has certainly stood the test of over 50 years.  Our traditional Quarrier would be updated in a more technologically friendly format so his image could be duplicated with consistency for another 50 + years.

#4 – The pride and power is clear. He is standing with the expression and posture of determination and pride. His detailed look is a bit more traditional, and he sits atop the Quarrier Rock – a font that resembles the look of stone.

#5 – This clean, sleek, yet strong look is a mix of strength and speed. He provides a very modern style that is simple and easily transferable to clothes and uniforms while the swinging of the axe adds speed and motion.

Click below for the online survey.  The survey will be available until Thursday, May 22nd.  For those that do not have internet access, ballots can be dropped off at the school until Friday, May 16th.

For their efforts the Dell Rapids Middle School Physical Education department will receive between $300-$400 to spend on new equipment.

Funds Raised for School Garden with Penny War

May 11, 2014 by Matt Larson, Big Sioux Media

The Dell Rapids Elementary students raised money all week, May 5th-May 9th, for the school garden with a “Penny War”.  The teams were broken up by grades:  Kindergarten/K-Prep, 1st Grade, 2nd Grade, 3rd Grade, 4th Grade, and Staff.  Each group had a collection jar in the library.  All week long students could add coins and bills to whichever jar they chose.  The total amount of pennies in the jar were counted to determine the winner, however, silver coins and bills counted against the number of pennies in each jar.  As an example, 200 pennies in a jar with two quarters would result in a final total of 150.  The team that had the most “penny count” at the end of the week earned a root beer float party.

The Kindergarten/K-Prep classes won this year’s “Penny War”.  The entire elementary school raised $1,772 for the school garden without the matching funds from Modern Woodmen of America!
