Dell Rapids 13/14 Teeners Advance to Semifinals

July 25, 2014 by Matt Larson, Big Sioux Media

The Dell Rapids 13/14 Teeners advanced to the semifinals of the 13/14 VFW State A Tournament with an 11-1 win over Spearfish on Friday, July 25th.

Spearfish scored an unearned run right away in the first inning on three walks and an error, but Dell Rapids was able to answer right back in the bottom of the first inning with a run on two hits.  Dell Rapids picked up another run in the bottom of the second on an RBI fielder’s choice by Keegan Miller.  Dell Rapids then broke the game open scoring three runs each in the third, fourth and fifth innings to end the game on the 10-run rule.

Carter Gullickson and Adam Nagelhout each had two hits in the game.  Nagelhout also had two RBI.  Logan Ruesink had an RBI double.  K. Miller, Eddie Price, Jeffery Schuch, Austin Ellingson, and Cameron Bruhn all had a hit.  Ellingson was also hit by a pitch two times, the second one hitting him under the helmet in the face.

Head Coach Danny Miller said that his team hit the ball okay.  Their pitcher kept them off balance with his curve ball and had a different delivery they were not used to.  D. Miller also said that he was pleased with only having one error in the game.

Ellingson picked up the win on the mound throwing four innings of no-hit baseball.  He gave up an unearned run while walking five and striking out seven.  Gullickson pitched the final inning for Dell Rapids giving up no runs on one hit and had one strikeout.

Dell Rapids will face Harrisburg Black in the semifinals at 5:00 p.m. on Saturday, July 26th. Harrisburg earned a 9-3 win over Parkston in the first game of the tournament.  D. Miller said that this game could be a slugfest and the last team standing will win.  His plan is to start Logan Heim on the mound.
