Cardinal Volleyball Earns Road Win in Freeman

DRSM LogoThe Dell Rapids St Mary Cardinal volleyball team defeated the Freeman Flyers 25-12, 25-9, 23-25, 25-20 on Monday, October 6th, in Freeman.

The Cardinals played an outstanding defensive game.  Five players had double-figure digs in the match.  Kaitlyn Vortherms anchored the defense with 28 digs.  Ally Mullaney had 24 digs on the night.  Claudia Schwebach added 18 digs, Nichole Brown notched 15, and Jackie Wolles had 13.  Riley Wolles had three blocks on the night.  Lindsey Wolles finished the match with 36 set assists.  Mullaney tallied 17 kills and eight aces.

The Cardinals improve to 6-13 on the year.  St Mary will host Deubrook Area on Thursday, October 9th.

Quarrier Golf Wins Back-to-Back Titles

NewDRLogoThe Dell Rapids Quarrier golf team won their second straight State A Championship on Tuesday, October 7th, in Hot Springs.  Entering the second day of the tournament with an 11-shot lead, the Quarriers dominated the final round finishing 38 strokes better than second-place Vermillion.  Dell Rapids finished the day 24 strokes better than they did in the first round with a 301.  That gave the Quarriers a tournament total of 626.  Vermillion finished with a two-day score of 664, and Aberdeen Roncalli dropped to third at the end of the day with a total of 681.

Adam Karst entered the final round tied for first, and finished with a final-round 73, giving him a total of 147 to claim the individual championship.  Karst was seven strokes better than second-place finisher Gabe Heller from Aberdeen Roncalli.  Ty Hoglund, Mason Schmidt, Devon Weber, and Josh Parrott all had better second-round scores in the final day.  Hoglund and Schmidt finished the tournament tied for sixth with a combined score of 159.  Weber finished the tournament in ninth place with a tournament score of 161.  Parrott finished the day with an 84, 12 strokes better than the first round, for a final score of 180.

Karst, Hoglund, and Schmidt were also named to the State A All-Tournament Team.

Dell Rapids finished the year with eight 1st place finishes and four 2nd place finishes in the 12 meets that they competed in this year.

New Business Opens Doors in Dell Rapids

Revive Fitness is the newest business to open its doors in Dell Rapids.  They held their Grand Opening celebration with ribbon cutting on Saturday, October 4th.  Revive Fitness is a specialized group fitness training business that holds daily classes of Yoga, BarreAmped, Kettleball, and Zumba.

Brittani Bollock, owner of Revive Fitness, is the certified Kettleball instructor.  Melissa Kirby is the Yoga instructor.  Janey Case runs the BarreAmped classes.  Margo Hegge and Katie Luttman are the Zumba instructors.

Quarrier Golf Leads after First Day of State A

NewDRLogoThe Dell Rapids Quarrier golf team leads after the first day of the State A tournament in Hot Springs.  Dell Rapids has an 11 shot lead with a team score of 325.  Aberdeen Roncalli is currently second with a score of 336.  Vermillion is third with a team score of 349.

Adam Karst currently tied for first with an opening round score of 74.  Mason Schmidt is tied for sixth with a round of 81.  Ty Hoglund and Devon Weber are both tied for 15th with a round of 85.  Josh Parrott ended his day with a round of 96.

The final round of the State A tournament from Hot Springs will be tomorrow, October 7th.

City Council Meeting – 10/6/14

The Dell Rapids City Council will meet in regular session on Monday, October 6th, at 7:30 p.m. at the Council Chambers.  Some of the items on the agenda include first reading on Ordinance 811 (Zoning Amendment – Adjustment to Yard Regulations), outdoor event permit request/discussion, library building project updates, and the administrative report.  The full agenda can be found by clicking here.

The regular session will be webcast on Big Sioux Media.  The city council will then enter into a time of executive session after the regular session has completed.

Quarrier Football Wins Wild Homecoming Game

On a cold and windy Homecoming night, the Dell Rapids Quarrier football team won a wild game over the Lennox Orioles 39-27 on Friday, October 3rd, in Dell Rapids.

The Quarriers scored first with 5:55 to go in the first quarter on a 5-yard touchdown run by Keegan Hemenway.  The extra point was no good and Dell Rapids led 6-0.  Lennox took a 1-point lead at 7-6 with 1:56 to go in the first quarter on an 11-yard touchdown run by Collin McEntee and a made extra point.  However Dell Rapids regained the lead at 12-7 with :59 to go on a 58-yard touchdown run by Riley Schmidt.

Dell Rapids pushed their lead to 20-7 with 6:42 left in the second quarter on an 8-yard touchdown run by Tanner Ljunggren.  Lennox scored the final touchdown of the first half on a 53-yard touchdown run by John Oldenkamp with 6:27 to go.  Dell Rapids held a 20-14 lead at halftime.

The Orioles seemed to have the moment early in the third quarter.  After forcing a Dell Rapids punt, Lennox scored on the ensuing drive on a 64-yard touchdown run by John Oldenkamp with 8:50 left in the quarter giving the Orioles a 21-20 lead.  Lennox extended their lead after Jacob Lackas scored on a 65-yard touchdown run with 5:25 in the third quarter.  Hemenway pulled Dell Rapids within one at 26-27 with 2:21 to go in the third quarter on a 3-yard touchdown run.

Dell Rapids regained the lead early in the fourth quarter.  Schimdt scored on a 39-yard touchdown run with 11:11 to go in the game to give the Quarriers a 32-27 lead.  Defenses held tough throughout the fourth quarter, and it was the Dell Rapids defense that sealed the victory for the Quarriers.  Riley Jurgensen scored on a 50-yard interception return for a touchdown to put Dell Rapids ahead 39-27.

Dell Rapids had 365 yards of total offense, 351 of those yards rushing.  Lennox picked up 258 yards of offense, all on the ground.  The Quarriers were 5-8 on third down while Lennox was just 1-11.  Dell Rapids had three turnovers while Lennox finished the game with four.

Jase Nelson was 1-4 passing for 14 yards.  Beau Carpenter had the lone catch for Dell Rapids.  Schmidt had 15 carries for 182 yards and two touchdowns.  Hemenway had 16 carries for 105 yards and two touchdowns.  Ljunggren had eight carries for 49 yards and a touchdown.  Jacob Schreier anchored the defense with seven tackles, two of those for loss.  Ljunggren and Tanner Heim each had five tackles.  Jurgensen, Ljunggren, and Jacob Faux each had an interception.

The Quarriers improve to 4-1 on the year.  Dell Rapids will host West Central on Friday, October 10th.  The game will be webcast on Big Sioux Media.

Cardinal Cross Country Teams Participate in Colman/Egan Event

DRSM LogoThe Dell Rapids St Mary Cardinal cross country teams participated in the Colman/Egan event on Wednesday, October 1st.  Mt. Vernon/Plakinton won the girls event with a team score of 7.  Deubrook finished second with 27 points, and Dell Rapids St Mary was third with a score of 34.  Mt. Vernon/Plankinton also won the boys event with a team score of 26.  McCrossan finished second with a team score of 38, and Baltic was third with 38.  The Cardinals finished fifth with a score of 44.

Quarrier Volleyball Falls to McCook Central/Montrose

QuarriersThe Dell Rapids Quarrier volleyball team was defeated by the McCook Central/Montrose Cougars 20-25, 25-16, 20-25, 23-25 on Tuesday, September 30th, in Dell Rapids.

Tiffany Finkral had 13 service points and a season-high 12 kills in the match.  Brittany Kludt had nine kills and three blocks for the Quarriers.  Sara Haak finished the match with 28 set assists.  Defensively for Dell Rapids, Shelby Wrage led the team with 12 digs.  Baily Munk added 10 digs.

Dell Rapids falls to 7-9 on the year.  The Quarriers will travel to Lennox to take on the Orioles on Thursday, October 2nd.

JV Results:
The JV team lost to the Cougars 2-1.  Sami Reider and Hannah Welbig anchored the backrow play.  Sara Van Regenmorter, Kiah Schumacher, and Trinity Gordon were cited for the offensive leadership.

C Team Results:
The C team also fell to the Cougars 2-1.  All 16 players on the C team saw action and contributed nicely in the heart-breaking defeat.

Baltic Earns Win over Cardinal Volleyball Team

DRSMvsBaltic_9-30-14_4The Dell Rapids St Mary Cardinal volleyball team lost a match in straight sets to the Baltic Bulldogs 17-25, 16-25, 17-25 on Tuesday, September 30th, in Dell Rapids.

Ally Mullaney led the team with eight kills on the night.  Lindsey Wolles and Brandi Wolles each had three kills apiece.  L. Wolles also dished out nine set assists in the match.  Mullaney was also a force on the defensive side, ending the night with 18 digs.  Claudia Schwebach had 14 digs, and Kaitlyn Vortherms added 11 digs.  Vortherms and Nicole Brown both had a service ace in the match.

The Cardinals fall to 5-13 on the year.  St Mary will travel to Freeman to take on Freeman Public on Monday, October 6th.DRSMvsBaltic_9-30-14_1

Fred Smith

Fred SmithFred P. Smith, 67, formerly of Oral, SD, died peacefully on Sept. 28, 2014, at Rapid City Regional Hospital.

He was born Jan. 3, 1947, to Junior C. and Rosalie M. (Thompson) Smith in Hayes, KS. Fred moved with his family to Oral in June of 1956, where they had purchased a unit on the Angostura Irrigation Project. Fred was raised on the farm and attended elementary school there where he made lifelong friends.

He graduated from Hot Springs High School in 1965, where he had excelled in academics and football. He enjoyed these years and the many good friends he had. He attended South Dakota State University. In 1968, he enlisted with the U.S. Marine Corps and served his country in Vietnam. He was honorably discharged in 1973.

On August 2, 1969, on a very hot day, Fred married Susan M. Rodman in Smithwick, SD. Together they had three children. Fred, Susan, Pat and Shauna lived in North Carolina briefly before Fred’s discharge. They returned to Oral and farmed and ranched in partnership with his father. During these years Fred worked hard providing for his family. He played softball and enjoyed his kids’ activities.

In his retirement Fred thoroughly enjoyed going shooting with his grandson, keeping up on the grandchildrens sports, academics and actvities, fantasy football, watching sports, being with friends and family and listening to music. Fred was very good at making people laugh with a sense of humor that would not stop. He had extreme attention to detail and he was a very smart man. He loved his family very much.

He is survived by his son, Pat (Julie) Smith of Willow City, ND; daughters, Shauna (Mick) Hoglund of Dell Rapids, and Stacy (Bill) Langer of Rapid City; grandchildren, Dawson, Quade, Trista, Morgan, Ty, Reed, Jessi and Kelly; and mother-in-law, Helen Hattervig of Dell Rapids.

He was preceded in death by his parents and his wife.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 4, at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Hot Springs, with Pastor Dwayne Hunzeker officiating. Interment will follow at the Fairview Cemetery near Oral.

A memorial in Fred’s name has been established to benefit the Hot Springs Bison Booster Club.

Arrangements have been placed in the care of McColley’s Chapel of the Hills in Hot Springs. Written condolences may be made at www.mccolleyschapels.com.
