Quarrier Football Advances to Quarterfinals

DRHSvsSisseton_FB_10-28-14_1The Dell Rapids Quarriers advanced to the quarterfinals of the 11A playoffs with a 41-12 opening round win over the Sisseton Redmen on Tuesday, October 28th, in Dell Rapids.

The Quarriers scores on their first five possessions of the game.  After forcing Sisseton to punt after three plays, Dell Rapids scored on their first offensive play of the game.  Keegan Hemenway scored on a 32-yard touchdown run and then kicked the extra point to give Dell Rapids a 7-0 lead with 10:03 left in the first quarter.  The Quarriers scores just a mere three minutes later on a two-yard touchdown run by Riley Schmidt with 7:24 in the quarter to go ahead 14-0.  The Quarriers added one more touchdown before the quarter was over.  With :10 left Jase Nelson connected with Schmidt on a 63-yard touchdown pass increasing the Dell Rapids lead to 21-0.

Dell Rapids continued to score at will in the second quarter.  Schmidt scored his third touchdown on another two-yard run with 10:29 to go in the half.  The Quarriers got the ball back on a turnover, and scored again with 9:29 DRHSvsSisseton_FB_10-28-14_2left in the quarter.  This time Nelson connected with Riley Jurgensen on a 1o-yard touchdown pass to put Dell Rapids ahead 35-0.  Sisseton was able to get on the board with 4:46 left in the half on a 24-yard touchdown pass from Hunter Medenwald to Ethan Kranhold to cut the lead to 35-6 heading into halftime.

Neither team was able to get much offense going in the third quarter.  The score remained 35-6 at the end of the third.  Schmidt found the endzone for the fourth time in the game with 11:53 to go in the game on a 20-yard run to put the Quarriers ahead 41-6.  Sisseton added their second score on a fumble recovery in the endzone for a touchdown by Nick Peterson with 4:25 left to play in the game.

Schmidt finished the game with eight carries for 109 yards and three rushing touchdowns.  Hemenway had three carries for 78 yards and a touchdown.  Tanner Ljunggren had three carries for 41 yards.  Nelson went 5-7 passing for 149 yards and two touchdowns.  Schmidt had three receptions for 130 yards and a touchdown.  Jurgensen had one catch for 10 yards and a touchdown.  Beau Carpenter had a catch for nine yards.

Seth Anderson led the defense with six tackles, one sack, and one fumble recovery.  Jurgensen finished the game with four tackles.  Nate McKee added three tackles.  Jacob Faux, Anthony Miller, Ross Wiebenga, and Carpenter each had an interception.  Tanner Heim had a fumble recovery.  The Dell Rapids defense force six turnovers and held Sisseton to 257 yards of total offense.

Dell Rapids improves to 8-1 on the year.  The Quarriers will host Vermillion on Monday, November 3rd.  The game will be webcast on Big Sioux Media.

Quarrier Volleyball Earns Win in Beresford

QuarriersThe Dell Rapids Quarrier volleyball team earned a 3-1 match win over the Beresford Watchdogs on Monday, October 27th, in Beresford.  The game scores were 25-22, 25-15, 18-25, 25-23.

Mikaela Stofferahn finished the night with 10 service points, 14 digs, and one block.  Brittany Kludt had six kills and two blocks.  Tiffany Finkral added five kills, 12 digs, and two blocks.  Sarah Haak dished out 24 set assists and also had 20 digs.  Shelby Wrage added 23 digs for the Quarrier defense.

The Quarriers improve to 11-15 on the year.  Dell Rapids will host Dakota Valley on Thursday, October 30th, in the final regular season match of the year.  The match will be webcast on Big Sioux Media.

JV Results:
The JV team lost to Beresford 2-1.  Trinity Gordon (7 points and 5 kills); Hannah Welbig (5 points); Arial Hoffman (10 kills and 3 points); Megan Miles (3 kills and 1 block); Chloe Solberg (12 set assists) lead the way.

C Team Results:
The C team fell 20-25 and 12-25.  Autumn Schumaker had 6 points.  Sydney Stofferahn and Kinsey Carr had 3 and 2 kills respectively.

Cardinal Volleyball Team Falls in Final Home Match

DRSM LogoThe Dell Rapids St Mary Cardinals were defeated in their final regular-season home match by the Oldham-Ramona/Rutland Raiders by scores of 17-25, 20-25, 20-25.

Kaitlyn Vortherms anchored the defense with 15 digs on the night.  Lindsey Wolles added 10 digs, and Ally Mullaney finished with nine.  Mullaney had three blocks, while Riley Wolles had two blocks.  L. Wolles also had nine set assists in the match.  Mullaney tallied six kills, and R. Wolles added two kills.  Claudia Schwebach notched three service aces, and Vortherms finished with two aces.

The Cardinals fall to 10-17 on the year.  St Mary will finish up the regular season in Canistota on Thursday, October 30th.

T&C Switching to Local Zip 57022

TCBrandChange 001T&C’s and The Other Place will be switching from Shell to Local.  Postcards were sent out by T&C’s to Dell Rapids residents on Monday, October 20th, explaining the upcoming changes.  Local is a South Dakota brand focused on helping to continue to put hometown first.  Local will offer T&C flexibility to better serve the needs in Dell Rapids without any national brand requirements.  Both T&C and The Other Place will be Local Zip 57022.

Changes to T&C to remove the Shell branding and install the Local branding are nearly completed at both locations.

Dell Rapids Students Participating in “Red Ribbon Week” this Week

2014RedRibbonWeekDell Rapids students at both Dell Rapids Public and Dell Rapids St Mary will be participating in “Red Ribbon Week” during the week of October 27th through the 31st.  Red Ribbon Week is held to commemorate the death of Kiki Camarena, a United States DEA Agent who was tortured and killed in Mexico while working in the fight against drugs. Now students, teachers, and families across America participate in this annual awareness campaign.  Public and St Mary students will be taking part in activities throughout the week, which include the following dress up days and activities:

Dell Rapids Public

  • Monday – “Sock It To Drugs” – Wear crazy socks!
  • Tuesday – “Team Up Against Drugs” – Wear Quarrier clothes!
  • Wednesday – “Drugs Turn You Inside Out” – Wear your clothes inside out!
  • Thursday – “Be All You Can Be” – Wear camo!
  • Friday – “Color My World Drug Free” – Wear red!

Dell Rapids St Mary

  • Monday – Sock it to Drugs… wear crazy socks
  • Tuesday – Team up Against Drugs… wear school spirit wear with jeans
  • Wednesday – Smarties choose to be drug free… students will get Smarties for a treat today.
  • Thursday – Being drug free is no sweat… wear sweats today
  • Friday – Don’t be tricked.. Drugs are no treat… students will receive a Halloween treat today.

Students will also be encouraged to send out drug free messages through Facebook at Twitter pledging to be drug free.

In addition to Red Ribbon Week activities, students can take part in a contest to try to win an iPad for themselves and $1000 for their school.  Students and families decorate their home’s front door, mailbox or fence with a double-looped red ribbon and the theme, “Love Yourself. Be Drug Free.”  Take a picture with the decoration and upload it to the following site: RedRibbon.org/contest from Oct. 1-Nov. 4!  You must be 18 years or older to upload the photo.  Ask friends and family to vote for your photo beginning Nov. 5.  Eleven winners will be announced December 5th!

Downtown Trick or Treat Held on Friday

2014_DowntownTrickOrTreat_3The Downtown Trick or Treat event was held on Friday, October 24th, downtown Dell Rapids.  This year’s event was one of the more attended trick or treat events due to the beautiful fall weather all afternoon and evening long.  There was plenty of fun for all the trick-or-treaters.  Not only was there candy handed out, but the event brought “Cosmic Quest” trailer, Mr. Twister, and little train rides.

2014 State Cross Country Meet Results

The 2014 State Cross Country Meet for classes AA, A, and B were held in Huron on Saturday, October 25th.

The entire Dell Rapids St Mary Cardinal girls team (Christina Vogel, Tana Harrington, Catherine Vogel, Cassie Geraets, Paige Bunkers) participated in the Class B meet.  Shaylee Hoff and Aspen Hansen competed individually for the Dell Rapids Quarriers in the girls State A meet.   Matt Farmer and Micah Roemen represented Dell Rapids St Mary in the boys Class B meet, and Zane Schumaker ran for the Quarriers in the boys State A meet.

The St Mary girls team finished in 14th place with 123 points.  Ipswich won the girls title with 12 points in Class B.

Quarrier Cheer Team 2nd and Cardinal Cheer Team 3rd at State A

QuarriersThe Dell Rapids Quarrier and Dell Rapids St Mary Cardinal competitive cheer teams participated in the 2014 State A Competitive Cheer and Dance Competition on Friday, October 24th, in Watertown.

The Quarriers team finished 2nd in the Grand Championship with 215.5 points.  The Cardinals team finished 3rd with 213.0 points.  Sioux Valley won the the Championship with 237.5 points, and Parkston finished 4th with 211.5 points.

Dell Rapids placed 1st in the Small Team Stunting/Tumbling division.  The St Mary Cardinas placed second.    Sioux Valley placed 1st in the Large Team Stunting/Tumbling division.
