Relay for Life Run

RelayForLifeRun-2015-2The third annual Relay for Life Run in Dell Rapids was held on Saturday, April 25th.  Runners endured a cool morning for the 10k, 5k, and mile walk.  The temperature was a cool 45 degrees with winds out of the west, but that didn’t keep runners from signing up at the ball fields on the south side of the Big Sioux River for the event.  The 10k race started at 9:00 a.m.  The 5k race and mile walk started at 9:30.  The kid’s relay race took place at Dell Rapids City Park at 11:00 a.m.  All the proceeds raised during the event went to the Dell Rapids Relay for Life team.

Cardinal Track Team Results from Chester

DRSM LogoThe Dell Rapids St Mary Cardinal girls and boys track teams participated in the Tom Main Invitational at Flyer Field in Chester on Saturday, April 25th.  Both teams finished 12th in their respective team standings.  Canton won the girls team title with 150.50 points.  Mt Vernon/Plankinton was second with 132 total points.  Tri-Valley won the boys team title with 100 points.  Chester Area finished second with 86 points.

Quarrier Track Team Has Great Showing in Flandreau

NewDRLogoThe Dell Rapids Quarrier girls and boys track teams had a great showing at the Flandreau Invitational Track Meet on Saturday, April 25th.  No team points were kept, but numerous Quarriers placed in the top eight of their respective events.  Dell Rapids, Deuel, Flandreau Public, Flandreau Indian School, Sioux Valley, and Pipestone Area were the schools that participated in the meet.

Greenhoff Finished 3rd in Milbank

NewDRLogoKaitlyn Greenhoff finished third individually with a round of 92 at the Milbank Poet Invitational at Pine Hills Golf Course in Milbank on Thursday, April 23rd.  Dell Rapids did not have a team score since only two varsity golfers played in the event.  Sarah Haak finished 11th with a round of 107.

Two JV golfers finished in the top five of the JV event.  Grace Tisher finished fourth with a round of 123.  Alexis Kranz finished right behind in fifth with a final total of 124.

The Dell Rapids golf team will play in the Vermillion Invite on Monday, April 27th.

Boys 1st – Girls 2nd for Quarrier Track at Beresford

NewDRLogoThe Dell Rapids Quarrier track teams placed at the top at the Beresford/Alcester-Hudson track meet on Tuesday, April 21st, Beresford.  The girls team placed second with a team score of 93.  Beresford won the girls event with 119 points, and Sioux Falls Christian was third with 78 points.  The boys team placed first with 132.50 points.  Sioux Falls Christian was second with 130 points, and Beresford was third with 89 points.

Daniel Millard

Daniel MillardDaniel Millard, age 67, died at Golden Living Healthcare Center on April 18, 2015. He was born on January 3, 1948 at Madison to Kenneth “Dutch” and Harriet (Rose) Millard. He married Carolyn (Schlim) Taylor in Pierre on October 8, 1993.

He is survived by his wife – Carolyn of Madison. Two sons- Scott (Heather) of Fremont, NE and Brett of Dell Rapids. One daughter – Kristi (Nick) Peterson of Madison. Two step sons – David (Pam) Stofferahn of Sequim, WA, Doug (Lori) Stofferahn of Ontario, CA and one daughter- Diana (Eric) Robanske of Redding, CA. 12 grandchildren. Two brothers – Dennis (Deb) of Lake Preston, SD and Doug of Madison. Two sisters – Debbie (Steve) Miller of Wentworth, SD and Dori (Dave) Hanneman of Madison. He was preceded in death by his parents.

Funeral services will be held at 1:30 PM on Wednesday, April 22, 2015 at Trinity Lutheran Church with Rev Constanze Hagmaier officiating. Burial with military honors will be in Graceland Cemetery.

Daniel grew up in Madison graduating from Madison High School in 1966. He served in the US Navy in Vietnam where is served as a Corpsman and was wounded in action. He was awarded the Purple Heart. After the service he returned to Madison where he attended Dakota State College and received an Associate degree in medical records. He worked for the City of Madison in the light department of 17 years. He also became a volunteer fireman becoming Fire Chief in 1987 where he retired in 1997. He was a life member of the VFW, American Legion and DAV. He also served as Southeast Director of the SD Firefighter’s Association for 8 years.

There will be a prayer service at 7:00 PM on Tuesday at Weiland Funeral Chapel which is in charge of the arrangements. Condolences may be left at www.weilandfuneralchapel.com

Cardinal Golf at Baltic

DRSM LogoThe Dell Rapids St Mary Cardinal boys golf team participated in the Baltic Invite on Tuesday, April 21st, at Northern Links Golf Course in Renner.  The Cardinals finished with a team score of 330.  McCook Central/Montrose won the team title with a score of 257.  Colman/Egan placed second with 280, and Garretson finished third with 284.

Lane Reecy had the low round of the day for the Cardinals.  He finished with a round of 108.  Austin Welbig had a round of 110.  Jacob Eining and Carson Park both finished the day with a 112.

The Cardinals will participate in the Dakota Valley Conference tournament held at Rocky Run Golf Course on Monday, April 27th, in Dell Rapids.

Velma Schwebach

Velma SchwebachVelma Elizabeth Schwebach, surrounded by family, quietly passed away Monday, April 20th. Her Mass of Christian Burial will begin at 10:00 a.m. on Thursday, April 23, 2015 in St. Mary Catholic Church. Visitation with family present will be on Wednesday, April 22, 2015 from 12:00 p.m. – 3:00 p.m. with a Catholic Daughters Rosary at 3:00 p.m. at Kahler Funeral Home. Visitation will resume in St. Mary Catholic Church at 4:00 p.m. with the Christian Wake Service beginning at 5:00 p.m. Condolences may be left at www.kahlerfh.com.

Velma embodied the spirit of Dell Rapids with her service to others, commitment to family, community, and a faith and a drive to find the best in herself and others.

Born in Norfolk, Virginia on September 15, 1925. The only child born to Roy and Lillian Simpson. Velma spent her early years in Norfolk, Virginia and San Diego, CA. It was there that she met the “love of her life”, John “Jack” Schwebach. The happy couple were married on January 6, 1956, following their move to South Dakota and beginning their 59 year love affair.

Jack and Velma farmed in Graceville, MN, Fergus Falls, MN and Colman, South Dakota, eventually settling down in their beloved Dell Rapids.

Velma was a devoted mother, wife and Christian. She belonged to the Catholic Daughters of America and the American Legion Auxiliary.

Velma is survived by her husband Jack, her children Debbie Crow, (Glenn Roeman), Robert (Pam) Schwebach, Dave (Shelly) Schwebach, Dawn Edmonson (OK), Lisa (Leon) Busser, Vicki Fischbeck (Tom Statz) (CA) and Roy (Christine) Schwebach. Grand Children Lavonne Hanson (Scott Huseth) (MN), Stanley (Shirley) Hanson (MN), MaryAnn (Randy) Martin (ND), Crystal (Brad) Kansanback, Shanna Crow (Brian Mosley), Heather (Jared) Bonetti(MN), Michael (Jill) Schwebach, Jon (Miranda) Schwebach (OK), Amber (Kody) Groff (OK), Joshua, Joseph and Justin Edmonson (OK), AJ (Karissa), Ben, Jake (Katie), Matt, Sarah (Lucas) (CA), John (Natalie) Schwebach(CA), Rachael(Larry) Weissenburger, Jeff (Tylene) Schwebach, Andrea Lindholm, Phillip Schwebach, and Great Grandchildren, Sam and Megan Aschnewitz, Benjamin and Makenzie Martin, Wade and Blain Kansanback, Sophia and Julia Mosley, RaeJean and Lillian Crow, Addie Bonetti, Brooklyn and Easton Schwebach, Devin Deluca and Porter Schwebach, Hailey and Natalie Groff, Degan Schwebach, Wyatt and Lawson Weissenburger, Dominic West and 3 Great Great Grandchildren …………each one was important in her life and a source of great pride.

She was preceded in death by her parents, sons, Rodney and John Schwebach; daughter, Doris Hanson and sons-in-law, Stan Hanson and Gene Crow.

Quarrier Girls Golf at West Central Invite

NewDRLogoThe Dell Rapids Quarrier girls golf team traveled to Hartford for the West Central invite on Monday, April 20th.  The Quarriers finished 12th with a team score of 551.  Parkston took the team title home with a total score of 363.  Vermillion was second with 393, and Dakota Valley was third with 393.

Kaitlyn Greenhoff had the low round for Dell Rapids.  She finished 11th individually with a round of 99.  Sarah Haak finished with a 139.  Shelby Redetske had a 145, and Stephanie Dennis finished with a 168.

Dell Rapids will next play in the POET Invite in Milbank on Thursday, April 23rd.

Joyce Evans

Joyce EvansJoyce V. Evans, 88, of Dell Rapids passed away on Monday, April 20, 2015 at the Bethel Lutheran Home in Madison, SD. Her memorial service will begin at 1:00 p.m. on Thursday, April 23, 2015 at the Lutheran Church of Dell Rapids. Visitation with the family present will be from 5:00 – 7:00 p.m. on Wednesday, April 22, 2015 at Kahler Funeral Home with a time of sharing at 7:00 p.m. Condolences may be left at www.kahlerfh.com.

Joyce Viola (Rave) Evans was born to Jack and Wilma (Sherburne) Rave December 31, 1926 in Trent, SD. At two years of age she moved with her parents to the family farm three miles south of town where she attended Hunt School District #10 and graduated from Trent High School in 1944. She attended Madison State Teachers College for two years and later furthered her education at the University of Sioux Falls and Augustana College while teaching elementary grades in Kadoka, Flandreau, Trent and Brandon.

She was united in marriage with Leon Evans of rural Sherman, SD on November 11, 1950. After Leon’s stint in the Army they made their home on a farm near Garretson and raised three children; Bill, Jim and Mary.

In 2009 she and Leon moved to Dell Rapids where she was living in Orchard Hills until the time of her death.  She was preceded in death by her daughter, Mary.

Mrs. Evans is survived by her sons, Bill Evans and his wife Gayla of Dell Rapids and Jim and his wife Lynne of Wentworth and her son-in-law, Mark Nuebel of Newport, MN; her grandchildren Nick Evans, Cedar Rapids, IA, Justin Evans and family, Dell Rapids and Billie Rothenberger and family of Sioux Falls; her great grandchildren, Ryler, Kale, Breck, Myelle and Jett Evans and Rylie and Alexa Rothenberger.
