GoldenWest’s Tour of Independence Comes to Dell Rapids

GoldenWest100YearCelebrationGoldenWest’s 100th Anniversary Tour of Independence celebration made a stop in Dell Rapids at City Park on Sunday, July 31st, from 12:00 p.m. to 2:00 p.m.  The celebration included a free lunch cookout, giveaways, kids’ activities, and an interactive technology exhibit called “Fence Posts to Fiber Optics”.

The tour celebration started on June 11th in Hot Springs.  The event has made stops in Custer, Pine Ridge, Mission, Freeman, Winner, Armour, and Hartford.  The celebration tour will also make a stop in Murdo on August 20th and Wall on September 24th.

15th Annual Relay for Life Held

RelayForLife_7-29-16_2The 15th Annual Relay for Life event at Dell Rapids City Park was held on Friday, July 29th.  The event started at 6:00 p.m. and ran until 6:00 a.m. on Saturday, July 30th.RelayForLife_7-29-16_7

Luminaries lined the park paths and were lit during the night.  The Boys Scouts held a whopper feed, and the Cancer Crusaders held concessions throughout the event.

RelayForLife_7-29-16_4The Survivor Walk kicked off the event right at 6:00 p.m. on Friday.  After the survivor walk, entertainment was provided by various individuals and groups throughout the evening.  The event concluded with a sunrise service led by Pastor Rick Timmer.  The emcee for the event was Erica Fersdahl.

Dell Rapids 15/16 Teeners Win Region 3A

The Dell Rapids 15/16 Teeners won the Region 3A Tournament held in Humboldt on July 25th and 26th to advance to the State A 15/16 VFW Teener Tournament.

Dell Rapids opened up the tournament on Monday, July 25th, by beating Tri-Valley 8-0.  Eddie Price pitched a complete game shutout.  He only allowed one hit, and struck out 10.  Offensively Dell Rapids was led by Keegan Miller who had a triple, a single, two RBI, and scored two runs.  Seth Speilmann and Austin Ellingson added two singles each, and both drove in a run.  Carter Gullickson added a double and two RBI, and Jeffrey Schuch hit a two-run single.

Dells Rapids then defeated West Central 8-3 in the region championship on Tuesday, July 26th, thanks to error-free defense and another complete game pitching performance.  Ellingson threw all seven innings for Dell Rapids striking out eight West Central hitters.  Gullickson led the charge for the offense with a double, two singles, and two RBI.  Cameron Bruhn contributed a triple and a single, and Ellingson added two more singles and a RBI.  Miller and Spielmann also collected hits and each drove in a run.  Spielmann scored three times.

Dell Rapids will face Milbank in the opening game of the state tournament on Friday, August 5th, at 12:00 p.m.  The state tournament will be held in Lennox August 5th through 7th.

Fred Lauer

Fred LauerFred Allan Lauer, 93, died Wednesday, July 27, 2016 at the VA Hospital in Sioux Falls, SD. On-line condolences may be let at the Miller Funeral Home website.

Fred was born on April 19, 1923, in Hartford, SD to Nicklaus and Elsie (Lueth) Lauer. He graduated from Dell Rapids High School in Dell Rapids, SD in May of 1942. While in school, he excelled in athletics. He also attended Augustana College in Sioux Falls, SD for a short time. He was in the U.S. Navy during WWII, serving in the South Pacific for many months.

Fred worked in sales and also had his own business. In his free time, he enjoyed working in his yard.

Fred is survived by three sons; Craig of Salt Lake City, UT; Kent of Reno, NV; and Jay of Parker, CO. He is also survived by one brother, Jack Lauer of Brandon, SD and one sister, Elaine Church of Sioux Falls, SD and several nieces, nephews and cousins. He was preceded in death by two sisters, Edith Fritz and Betty Gallagher.

A private service will be held at Hills of Rest Cemetery in Sioux Falls, SD.

Dell Rapids High School and Legion Baseball Awards

DellsBaseballLogoThe Dell Rapids High School and Dell Rapids Legion baseball teams had players recognized with post-season awards.

Josh Roemen, Carter Gullickson, Ryan Geraets, and Brett Mogen were selected to the 2016 Class B All-State Team for Dell Rapids High School Baseball.  These four were also named to the All-Region team.  Eric Klein and Matt Gillogly were also named to the All-Region Team.  Noah Scotting, Mogen, Klein, Casey Hansen, and Geraets were also Academic All-State winners.

Two players from the Dell Rapids Legion team were selected to play in the 2016 American Legion All-Star game.  Trey Randel and Ryan Geraets were selected by the South Dakota Amateur Baseball Coaches Association to play in the games.  There will be two All-Star games played on Monday, August 1st, at Lake Norden starting at 5:30.

Dell Rapids 13/14 Teeners Finish 2nd at State

West Central and Dell Rapids combined to score seven runs in the seventh inning alone, and it was West Central that edged out Dell Rapids for the 13/14 State A VFW Teener Tournament title 7-5 at Rickeman Field on Sunday, July 24th. DellsvsWC_7-24-16

Dell Rapids scored the first run of the game when Connor Libis scored on an errant throw to third in the bottom half of the first inning. West Central got on the board in the top of the third on a two-run single by Caden Ideker and took a 2-1 lead.  West Central then added another run in the top of the sixth on a run scored by Truman Dick.  Dell Rapids answered with a run in the bottom half of the inning on an RBI single by Brandon Geraets to cut the West Central lead to 3-2 heading to the top of the seventh inning.  That’s when the offenses caught fire.

West Central scored four times in the top of the seventh on RBI hits by Ryan Healy, Ideker, Tyler Lundborg, and Dick.  West Central finished their half of the inning leading 7-2.  Karsen Welbig started the inning by drawing a walk and eventually scored.  After a strikeout, Libis and Logan Ellingson also drew walks.  JD Holm drove in a run with an RBI groundout.  Jake Steineke followed with an RBI single to cut the lead to 7-5.  With Steineke on second base and two outs, Geraets roped a line drive to center field that was run down and caught for the final out of the game.

Cooper Maras pitched the entire game for West Central earning the win by giving up five runs, all earned, on four hits while walking six and striking out 10.  Ty Wood started the game for Dell Rapids pitching four innings giving up two earned runs on five hits while walking one and striking out two.  Logan Stone pitched 2 1/3 innings of relief giving up three runs, two earned, on two hits while walking three.  Steineke pitched the final 2/3 of an inning giving up two earned runs on three hits with one strikeout.

Dell Rapids also was awarded the Sportsmanship Team Award for the tournament.

Dell Rapids 13/14 Teeners Head to the Championship Game

DellsvsTea_7-23-16_1Dell Rapids scored 15 runs in the middle innings and defeated Tea 15-2 on Saturday, July 23rd, at Rickeman Field.  The win moves Dell Rapids to the Championship Game against West Central on Sunday, July 24th, at 5:00 p.m.

Both starting pitchers got through the first inning with relative ease as neither team scored.  Dell Rapids then scored four times in the top of the second inning.  Tea answered with two in their half of the second to cut the Dell Rapids lead to 4-2.  Dell Rapids added two more runs in the third inning.  The host team then scored nine times in the fourth inning to put the game out of reach.

Every started had a hit in the game for Dell Rapids.  Brandon Geraets had two hits.  Thane Hilmoe had one hit and three RBI.  Connor Libis, Logan Ellingson, JD Holm, Jake Steineke, Drew VanRegenmorter, Karsen Welbig, and Ty Wood all had hits.  Libis, Ellingson, Steineke, VanRegenmorter, and Welbig all had an RBI as well.  Hunter Frankenstein had two hits for Tea.  Brandon Hone had a double, and Trevor Welch had a hit.

Steineke earned the win for Dell Rapids.  He pitched four innings giving up two runs, one earned, on four hits while walking two and striking out six.  Ellingson pitched the final inning walking one and striking out one.  Cameron Jensen took the loss pitching three innings giving up six runs, four earned, on six hits while walking two and striking out one.  Frankenstein pitched 1/3 of an inning giving up eight runs, all earned, on two hits while walking one and hitting four batters.  Hone pitched 1 1/3 innings of relief giving up one earned run on two hits with one walk.

Dell Rapids 13-14s Advance to Semi Finals

DellsVsWIN_7-22-16Dell Rapids advanced to the semifinals of the 13/14 State A VFW Teener Tournament after a 20-6 win over Warner/Ipswich/Northville (W.I.N.) on Friday, July 22nd, at Rickeman Field in Dell Rapids.

Dell Rapids scored two early runs in the top of the first inning, but W.I.N. answered with four runs in the bottom of the inning to take a 4-2 lead.  It was a short-lived lead as Dell Rapids put up four runs in the second and two more in the third to go ahead 8-4.  Dell Rapids then scored six times in the top of the fifth inning to lead 14-4.  W.I.N. was able to scratch across a run in the bottom of the fifth to keep the game alive.  Dell Rapids then answered with six more runs in the sixth inning on their way to the win.

Jake Steineke led Dell Rapids going 4-4 with three doubles and an RBI.  Connor Libis had two hits and an RBI.  Logan Ellingson had two hits, including one double, while driving in a run.  JD Holm also had two hits and four RBI.  Drew Van Regenmorter had two hits, both doubles, with two RBI.  Brandon Geraets had an RBI double.  Zeb Schumaker, Karsen Welbig, and Brandon Kubly all had hits as well.

Max Geditz had two hits for W.I.N.  Ben Fischbach, Jordan Richardt, and Hunter Jeschke all had hits.  Richardt, Sawyer Stroshein, and Will Nilsson each and an RBI in the game.

Logan Stone earned the win for Dell Rapids pitching four innings of relief.  He gave up one run on three hits while walking one and striking out five.  Ty Wood started the game giving up four runs on no hits while walking five.  Holm pitched an inning of relief giving up an unearned run on two hits.  Gilbert took the loss for W.I.N. pitching four innings giving up eight runs on 10 hits striking out three and walking two.  Richardt pitched 1/3 of an inning giving up six runs on two hits while walking three and striking out one.  Stroschein pitched 1 2/3 innings giving up six runs on four hits with one walk and two strikeouts.

Dell Rapids will play Tea at 8:00 on Saturday, July 23rd.

Michael MunkMichael Dean Munk, 61, of Sioux Falls passed away unexpectedly Thursday, July 21, 2016. Funeral services will begin at 10:00 AM Monday, July 25, 2016 at Minnehaha Funeral Home Chapel in Dell Rapids. Visitation with the family present will be from 3:00 to 5:00 PM Sunday at Minnehaha Funeral Home. On-line condolences may be left at the Minnehaha Funeral Home website.

Grateful for having shared his life are his brother, David (Karen) Munk, Dell Rapids and their children, Brian (Katie) Munk, Ft. Worth, TX and Melissa (Darren) Dressen, Colman, SD; sister, Kris (Dale) Machmiller, Garretson, SD and their children, Amanda (Jason) Kiner, Minnetonka, MN and Travis (Katie) Machmiller, Garretson, SD as well as many other relatives and friends.

Dell Rapids Shopko Hometown Grand Opening

ShopkoOpening_7-22-16_1The store has been open for a couple of weeks for customers, but the Grand Opening celebration for the Dell Rapids Shopko Hometown was held on Friday, July 22nd.  A crowd gathered outside the store for the events that started at 8:45 a.m. with a ribbon cutting ceremony and Shopko Foundation presentations.

Dell Rapids Shopko Hometown manager Patty Ramsey said, “Our team and I are so excited to be in this community.  I’ve found it to be very friendly.  I love this community and couldn’t ask for a friendlier community.  I’m really happy to be here.”DR_Shopko_1

“We’d like to thank you for choosing Dell Rapids, for investing in Dell Rapids.  I know the community as a whole appreciates you being here, and we’ll certainly show you our customer loyalty,” said Dell Rapids Chamber of Commerce President Dan Ahlers during the ceremonies.

DRSM_Shopko_1Ramsey also presented two checks from the Shopko Foundations.  The first check was for $2,500 to the Dell Rapids High School.  The second check was for $1,000 to the Dell Rapids St Mary High School.  Ramsey then told the crowd that Shopko really does care for the community, and anyone who has fundraising can work with her or the Shopko Foundation.

After the ribbon cutting, the first 100 customers through the door on Friday received a certificate for a $10 gift card.  Customers could also sign up for the loyalty program throughout the day, and they were also treated to refreshments.
