Cardinal Volleyball Places 8th in Estelline

DRSM LogoThe Dell Rapids St Mary Cardinal volleyball team placed eighth at the Estelline Tournament on Saturday, August 27th.

The Cardinals lost two matches in pool play.  They lost to Wilmot 18-25, 9-25, and also lost to Estelline 22-25, 16-15.  The Cardinals then defeated Sunshine Bible Academy 25-15, 25-16 in the bronze bracket, but lost to Viborg/Hurley 15-25, 20-25.

The Cardinals (1-4) will host Oldham-Ramona/Rutland in Cardinals’ first home match of the season on Tuesday, August 30th.

Quarrier Volleyball Finishes 7th in Canton

NewDRLogoThe Dell Rapids Quarrier volleyball team finished seventh at the Canton Tournament on Saturday, August 27th.

Dell Rapids dropped a match to Lennox 13-25, 23-25 and also lost a match to Vermillion 23-25, 11-25.  The Quarriers won one match in pool play over West Lyon 25-23, 16-25, 25-23.

Dell Rapids defeated Garretson in the seventh place game 25-14, 25-15.

The Quarriers will host Elk Point-Jefferson in the first home match of the season on Tuesday, August 30th.

Canistota Pushes Past Cardinal Football for Win

DRSMvsCanistotaFB_8-26-16_1The Dell Rapids St Mary Cardinals fell to the Canistota Hawks in the opening game of the 2016 football season 42-6 on Friday, August 26th, in Canistota.

On the first offensive play of the game for St Mary, the Cardinals threw an interception.  Canistota turned that into points after a three-yard touchdown run by Jacob White Lance with 7:23 to go in the first quarter.  On the second offensive play of the game, the Cardinals snapped the ball over the head of Garret Frost into the endzone for a safety.  Canistota then led 8-0 with 7:10 left in the first quarter.  The Hawks scored again with 3:57 to go on a two-yard touchdown run by White Lance to go ahead 14-0.  St Mary settled down in their third offensive drive, and with 1:50 left DRSMvsCanistotaFB_8-26-16_2in the quarter Frost connected with Evan Brown on a 31-yard touchdown pass to cut the lead to 14-6.

Canistota would score three more times, though, in the second quarter.  The first score came with 11:49 to go on a 28-yard run by White Lance.  The second touchdown came at the 6:19 mark on a six-yard run by Scott Jolly.  The final score of the half came with 2:30 to go and was an 18-yard pass from Jolly to Andrew Weber.  The Hawks led 34-6 at halftime.

The final score of the game came on a 92-yard run by Austin Thu to make the score 42-6.

The Cardinals travel to Rutland to take on the Oldham-Ramona/Rutland Raiders on Friday, September 2nd.  The game can be seen on Big Sioux Media.

Madison Hands Quarrier Football Opening Loss

DellRapidsFootballLogoThe Madison Bulldogs spoiled the season and home-opener for the Dell Rapid Quarriers on Friday, August 26th.  Madison defeated Dell Rapids 35-6.

Madison got on the board with 5:19 to go in the first quarter on a five-yard touchdown run by Josh Giles.  The Bulldogs would score two more times in the second quarter.  Mason Leighton caught a 63-yard pass from Giles with 11:50 to go in the half, and then Leighton scored on a 90-yard punt return with 9:01 to go in the half to make it a 23-0 lead.

Leighton would add one more touchdown as he had an 87-yard kickoff return for a touchdown to open up the third quarter.  Madison scored again with 7:59 to go in the third quarter on a one-yard run by Riley Janke.  Dell Rapids picked up their lone touchdown with :47 to go in the third quarter on a one-yard touchdown run by Hunter Hansen.

Hansen finished the game throwing 1-6 for six yards and one interception.  Hansen also had 12 carries for five yards and a touchdown.  Tanner Heim had 13 carries for 55 yards.  Anthony Miller had nine carries for 41 yards, and Seth Andersen had 11 carries for 34 yards.  Matt Gillogly had the lone catch for six yards.

Gillogly led the defense with five tackles, one of those for a sack.  Andersen had four tackles and sack.  Nick Hoffman had three tackles.  Jeffrey Schuch, Heim, Hansen, and Ross Wiebenga all had two tackles each.

Dell Rapids had a total of 177 yards of total offense, while Madison had a total of 245 yards.  The Quarries did have 14 first downs, but turned the ball over four times and were penalized seven times for 37 yards.

Dell Rapids will host Vermillion on Friday, September 2nd, and the game can be seen on Big Sioux Media.

Quarrier Cross Country Opens Season in Beresford

The Quarriers will be at the McCook Invite on Tuesday, August 30th.

Quarrier Volleyball Drops Season-Opening Match

NewDRLogoThe Dell Rapids Quarriers dropped their 2016 season-opening match to the West Central Trojans 12-25, 25-23, 23-25, 19-25 on Thursday, August 25th, in Hartford.

Emma Paul had eight service points for Dell Rapids.  Brooke Klein added seven points along with 20 digs.  Trinity Gordon had eight kills and had 11 digs.  Sydney Stofferahn added five kills, and Hannah Fletcher had 22 assists.

The Quarriers will play in the Canton tournament on Saturday, August 27th.

The JV and C teams suffered setbacks in both of their matches.  The C team dropped their match by the set scores of 27-25, 8-25, and 13-15.  The JV lost two sets to zero.  Cited for their efforts were Maria Jackson, Gabi Rus, Jessica Schoeberl in the JV match.  Katie Steineke, Kyra Graham, and Dezi Rus led the C team efforts.

Todd Fisher

Todd FisherTodd Dean Fisher, 55, of Pipestone, MN and longtime resident of Trent, SD, passed away on August 22, 2016. A celebration of Todd’s life will begin at 1:00 p.m. in the Kahler Funeral Home Chapel on Friday, September 9, 2016. Visitation with the family present will be one hour prior to the start of the service. Inurnment will be in the Hillside Cemetery, Egan, SD. On-line condolences may be left at Kahler Funeral Home website.

Todd was born on June 1, 1961 at Worthington, MN, the son of Gerald Dean Fisher and Lillian Mae Fisher (Olson-Troff). He attended Flandreau High School and a technical vocational school as well. Todd worked for Wyland Construction, Co. for several seasons as a truck driver and laborer and Bayliner Boat Company in MN. Todd met Lisa Erickson (Peacock) of Pipestone, MN and married in 1988 (-1990) in Lake Tahoe, NV and resided in CA. Todd worked for the city of Fairfield, CA and ran his own slurry seal business. Todd returned to SD in the late 1990’s where he worked in the neon sign business, drove farm trucks for several local farmers and subsequently started his own neon lighting business. Todd was a skilled mechanic, carpenter, and construction engineer.

Todd was known for his athleticism. He was a talented basketball, baseball and softball player. His passion was fishing. He spent many hours along the banks of the Big Sioux River and several local lakes. When in CA he loved crabbing at Bodega Bay and panning for gold. He was a gardener and antique picker. He was compassionate for the young children, the elderly and animals.

Todd has three daughters, Kasey Fisher, Shelby Sumers and Rachel Bedell. He was so proud of his beautiful daughters. He was able to spend more time with them in the last year of his life. He taught Kasey to trout fish and get through the “gargoyle grass.” Todd’s friends remember him as “one of the funniest guys they ever knew.” He could make the old and the young laugh out loud.

Todd is preceded in death by his mother, Lillian (Olson) Fisher Troff, his step father, Robert Troff and Evelyn Bedell.

Those left to cherish his memory are his daughters, Kasey Fisher of OK, Shelby Summers of CA, Rachel Bedell of OR; his sister, Robin (Fisher) (Jon) Rowe of Kalamazoo, MI; his brother, Rodney Troff of Flandreau; his three nieces, Chelsea Cullen of AZ, Caitlin Cullen of AZ and Natalie Rowe of MI; his cousins, Terry, Mark and Paul Wheeler, Julie Mathias and Eric Erickson, Lisa Fisher and Sonia Lyn Sumers.

School is Back in Session

SchoolCrossingThe 2016-2017 school year is set to begin on Wednesday, August 24th.  As a reminder to the school year starting again, the school zone speed limits are 15 mph.

This year’s school year will see two new teachers to Dell Rapids St Mary.  Joni Smith returns to St Mary and will teach K-12 vocal music, 5-12 band, and be student council advisor.  Marsha Weiland will teach K-2 reading class.

Dell Rapids will have eight new teachers this year.  They are Michelle Wharton (4th Grade), Sarah Anderson (4th Grade), Maddie Merriam (4th Grade), Amanda Button (5th/6th Grade Special Education), Bryan Timperley (5th/6th Grade Band), Mark Honerman (5th Grade Science and Language Arts), Natalie Eggers (5th Grade Social Studies), and Peggy Hancock (Special Education).

Along with the new staff, the three projects of the new locker rooms, new science rooms, and new entrances are nearly complete. NewDROfficeEntrance

Rocky Run Hosts Dells Boys Golf Invite

NewDRLogoThe Dell Rapids Quarriers boys golf team played in the Dells Invite held at the Rocky Run Golf Course on Monday, August 22nd.  The Quarriers finished 12th with a team score of 376.  Sioux Falls Christian won the team title with a score of 343.  Dakota Valley was second with 343 as well, and Aberdeen Roncalli placed third with a score of 344.

Jordan Kerns had the low score for Dell Rapids with a round of 87.  Mason Schmidt finished with an 88, and Sheldon Siemonsma had a round of 99.  Karsen Welbig and Zach McKee both finished with a 102.  Jack Weber finished with a 108.

The Quarriers will play in the Sioux Falls Christian Invite at Spring Creek Golf Course on Tuesday, August 3oth.

Milton Munk

Milton MunkMilton J. Munk, 91, of Dell Rapids died Sunday, August 21, 2016 at the Dells Nursing & Rehab Center.  Memorial services will begin at 10:00 AM Saturday September 10, 2016 at the Lutheran Church of Dell Rapids. Visitation will begin at 9:00 AM at the church. Burial of the ashes of Milton and Audrey Munk will follow the funeral service at the Dell Rapids Cemetery.  On-line condolences may be left at the Minnehaha Funeral Home website. 

Milton James Munk, son of Edna (Artz) and Jesse Munk, was born August 10, 1925 at Dell Rapids. He grew up in the Dell Rapids area and attended country school at the Nelson School. He graduated from Dell Rapids High School in 1944. Milton entered the United States Army in 1945 and was stationed in Germany, being discharged in 1947.

Milton married Audrey Van Briesen on November 17, 1945 at Camp Robinson, Little Rock, Arkansas. The couple made their home in Dell Rapids until 1948 when they moved to a farm northeast of Dell Rapids. In 1969 they moved to Dell Rapids when he went into the livestock and grain trucking and order buying business. He was the recipient of many Livestock Safety Hauling awards. He was on the Board of Directors for the South Dakota Livestock Trucker Association. He retired (the first time) in 1989. He helped his brother, Harold on the farm for a year and later drove truck for Buskerud Construction, Dells Materials, and later for Dells Coop Grain Company. He also helped Bill Klein’s sons with harvest. Since then he retired at least six times.

Over the years Milton was a member of the Lutheran Church of Dell Rapids, the Dell Rapids American Legion and the South Dakota Livestock and Truckers Association.

Milton was an avid sports fan, especially football and the Green Bay Packers, baseball and NASCAR. Milton and Audrey enjoyed some winters in San Benito, Texas. When he wasn’t driving truck, he enjoyed coffee and fellowship with good friends at T & C.

Milton was preceded in death by his loving wife, Audrey who died October 18, 2012, their son, Rick; his brother, Eldon and his wife, Vera and his brother, Harold.

Grateful for having shared his life are his children, Randy (Karen) Munk, Bobby Munk, Candy Munk, Sherry Munk and Peggy Munk; grandchildren, Nathan, Audrey Anna, Andrew, April, Gabriella, Abdul, Wade, Darin, Jennifer, Erin and Holly; nineteen great-grandchildren; many nieces and nephews and his sister-in-law, Gail Bares.

The family requests that memorials be directed to the Dell Rapids American Legion or Compassionate Care Hospice.
