Quarrier Volleyball Streak Reaches Six

DRvsGarretson_VB_9-19-17The Dell Rapids Quarrier volleyball team won their sixth match in a row on Tuesday, September 19th.  Dell Rapids defeated the Garretson Blue Dragons in straight sets by scores of 25-10, 25-14, 25-14.

Hannah Fletcher tallied 15 service points throughout the night, including four aces.  Fletcher also had 21 set assists.  Jayda Knuppe and Sydney Stofferahn had seven kills each.  Stofferahn had two blocks, while Knuppe had one.  Brooke Klein had 14 digs, and Trinity Gordon finished with 13 digs and one block.  Maria Jackson added nine service points with an ace.

The Quarriers now improve to 8-2 on the season.  Dell Rapids will travel to Flandreau to take on the Fliers on Thursday, September 21st.

JoanHiltsC. Joan Hilts, 76, of Omaha, NE, passed away peacefully on Sunday, September 17, 2017 at the Dougherty Hospice House in Sioux Falls, SD after a two year battle with pancreatic cancer. Her funeral service will begin at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, September 22, 2017 at Christ Community Church, 404 S. 108th, Omaha, NE 68154. Visitation on Thursday, September 21, 2017 will be from 5:00 p.m. – 7:00 p.m. at the Roeder Mortuary 108th Chapel, 2727 N. 108, Omaha, NE 68164.  www.kahlerfh.com

Carol Joan Lewis was born on February 25, 1941, in Sioux City, Iowa, the daughter of Charles A. and Meredith M.(Anderson) Lewis.  She was the first of four children with siblings, Kay and Kenneth (twins) and brother, Robert (Bob) Lewis. She was raised in Sioux City, married to Terry Hilts and raised her family there. In 1983, she moved to Omaha, NE, and worked for thirty-two years at Nebraska Methodist Hospital and Health System, and at Nebraska Methodist College. She retired in February of 2014, but went back to the college to work on occasion and as needed, until the summer of 2015.

Joan has been a devoted member of Christ Community Church since September of 2001, and made a conscious decision to profess her faith in her Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, and asked for forgiveness of sin by being re-baptized on September 28, 2003. She has loved praising our Lord as a member of the Christ Community Church choir. She was a former member of the Omaha Chapter of Sweet Adelines, currently, Acappella Omaha,and she has also participated in the Omaha Music Circle. Traveling has also been a joy. She especially loved Siesta Key Beach, FL, and the Gulf Coast of Florida, where she vacationed many times with family and friends. She has enjoyed scrapbooking photos and other memories for family and friends, and researching her family genealogy. On one very special trip,  she joined her cousin, Tom Bloxham and his wife, Betsy, along with her brother, Ken, his wife, Pam Lewis, as they traveled to Denmark to see where their great-grandfather and great-grandmother Anderson were born and lived before they came to the United States in the 1800s. It was truly a trip of a lifetime.

She was preceded in death by her parents and her brother, Bob.

Joan is survived by her loving family, her son, Mark (Teresa) Hilts of Sioux City, IA; her daughters, Diane (Richard) Nyalka of Rotonda West, FL; and Susan (Mike) Kahler of Dell Rapids, SD; her grandchildren, Matt (Britni) Hilts; Eric (Jen) Hilts; Allison (Vince)  Mathis; Jared (Ashley) Brown; Amanda Kahler; Nic Kahler; step-grandchildren, Dan (Nichole) Nyalka; and Renee (Brian) McVey; great-grandchildren, Philip Hilts; Madison Hilts; Ethan Hilts; Aiden Mathis; Simon Hilts; Samuel Hilts; Morgan Nyalka; Jocelyn McVey; Grady Nyalka; Aria Mathis; Jayce Brown; and Colin McVey; her sister, Kay Tabscott of St. Louis, MO; her brother, Ken (Pam) Lewis of Cedar Rapids, IA; and her many special cousins, nieces and nephews and extended special friends and Sisters and Brothers in Christ.

Garbage Frustration Leads to River Clean-up Day

DellRapidsCleanUpDay1Frustrations over garbage and trash at the dam area have lead a Dell Rapids resident to schedule the first River Clean-up Day.  Kiley Stone, owner of Stone Photography, couldn’t stop thinking about how sad it was that an area so beautiful is being damaged with garbage and litter.

“Growing up I never really knew the area by the dam existed. When I started getting into photography, I started exploring all the areas of town I was unfamiliar with.  The area by the dam is my favorite.  It is  a beautiful area and there is a lot of ground to walk around and explore.  I have continued, year after year, to watch this area get trashed and damaged.  When I take customers there, I am always having to tell them to watch out for all the glass or we cannot use this spot because it’s littered with trash,” Stone said. Rather than complaining about the situation, Stone has organized a “River Clean-up Day” for Saturday, October 14th, starting at 8:00 a.m.  A Facebook event posted by Stone as already gotten great response from many in the community that want to help.  The event has also received support from the City of Dell Rapids.

“The City of Dell Rapids said they would provide the trash bags and bring a couple of dumpsters down to throw all the bags into,” Stone said.  “Since this is the first time, I am not sure how much ground we will cover, but I hope to cleanup all along the river from Highway 115 west to the trestle. If it works out great and I get a good response, I hope to keep this as an annual event and circle around to different areas of town each year.”

Quarriers Finish 10th at Dak XII Boys Golf Tourney

NewDRLogoThe Dell Rapids Quarrier boys golf team finished 10th at the Dak XII Conference Tournament held at Two Rivers Golf Course in North Sioux City on Monday, September 18th.  The weather conditions happened to be wet and muggy for most of the day for the tournament.

Dell Rapids finished with a team score of 366.  Dakota Valley won the team conference title with a total of 305.  Tea Area was second with 323, and Madison placed third with a team score of 324.  Brock Murphy of Tea Area took home the individual conference title with a round of 72.

Mason Schmidt (26th) had the low round for Dell Rapids on the day with an 86.  Zach McKee finished with a round of 90.  Brandon Kubly had a 93.  Karsen Welbig finished with a 97, Jack Weber had a 105, and Malakai Anderson had a 107.

The Quarrier varsity team will prepare for the Region 1A Tournament which will be held at Rocky Run Golf Course in Dell Rapids on Monday, September 25th.  The JV team will have their Dak XII tournament on Tuesday, September 19th, in Canton.

Quarrier and Cardinal Cheer Teams at Brookings

NewDRLogoThe Dell Rapids Quarrier and Dell Rapids St Mary Cardinal competitive cheer teams competed at the Brookings Invite held at the Swiftel Center in Brookings on Saturday, September 16th.  Sixteen schools competed in the competitive cheer portion of the event.

The Quarriers finished tied for third with a total of 221.00 points.  The Cardinals finished 12th with a total of 183.5o points.  Sioux Valley won the competition with 248.00 points.  DRSM LogoSioux Falls Washington was second with 237.00 points.  Harrisburg tied with Dell Rapids with 221.00 points.

The Quarriers will participate in the Sioux Valley Invite on Thursday, September 21st.  They will also be at the Dakota Valley Invite on Saturday, September 23rd, and the Sioux Falls O’Gorman Invite on Tuesday, September 26th.

The Cardinals will have their next competition at the Rider Spirit Invitational at the Sanford Pentagon on Saturday, September 30th.

 

De Smet Spoils Cardinal Homecoming

DRSMvsDeSmet_FB_9-15-17The De Smet Bulldogs spoiled the 2017 Homecoming for the Dell Rapids St Mary Cardinal football team on Friday, September 15th.  The Bulldogs defeated St Mary 36-8 at Rickeman Field in Dell Rapids.

Neither team scored in the first quarter.  Both teams had just one possession, and each defense forced a turnover on downs.  De Smet, however, scored 24 unanswered points in the second quarter on three touchdowns.  Cade Birkel scored first on a one-yard touchdown run with 9:33 to play in the second quarter.  The two-point conversion was made on a run by Gage Gruenhagen.  Birkel scored again with 4:49 to play on a 48-yard run.  Birkel then connected with Trevin Holland for the two-point conversion.  The final touchdown in the second quarter came with 2:31 to play after a St Mary fumble.  Zach Wolkow scored on a four-yard run.  The two-point conversion was made to give the Bulldogs a 24-0 lead at halftime.

St Mary’s second half drive ended in a fourth down stop deep in Bulldog territory, and one play later Wolkow was in the endzone again for De Smet after a 69-yard run with 6:31 to play in the quarter.  The Cardinals were able to get on the scoreboard with 2:37 to go in the third quarter after a 16-yard touchdown pass from Eli Longville to Seth Bares.  Connor Libis scored the two-point conversion.  De Smet would get one more touchdown with just :02 left in the third quarter on a 22-yard run by Jared Hoefert for the final score of the game.

The Cardinals finished the game with 220 yards of offense, 179 rushing yards and 40 passing yards.  De Smet had 296 yards of total offense, 275 rushing yards and 21 passing yards.

Payton Park led St Mary with seven carries for 55 yards.  Libis had six carries for 41 yards.  Longville was 2-4 passing for 40 yards, a touchdown, and an interception.  Libis had one catch for 28 yards.  Bares had one catch for 16 yards and a touchdown.  Defensively, Tate Hansen had nine tackles and one sack in the game.  Weston Geraets also had nine tackles.  Longville finished with 8.5 tackles, and Logan Gaspar had 6.5 tackles and a forced fumble.

St Mary (1-3) will travel to Castlewood on Friday, September 22nd.  The game can be seen on Big Sioux Media.

Quarrier Football Puts Exclamation Point on Homecoming

DRvsWC_FB_9-15-17The Dell Rapids Quarrier football team put an exclamation point on the 2017 Homecoming celebration with a 35-13 win over the West Central Trojans on Friday, September 15th, at Dell Rapids High School.

The Quarriers scored two times in the first quarter and never looked back for the win.  Jeffrey Schuch got the scoring started with a 65-yard pass from Carson Rentz.  The second touchdown came on a Josh Heinemann three-yard run to put Dell Rapids ahead 14-0.  The Trojans cut the lead in half in the second quarter on a 55-yard run, and Dell Rapids led 14-7 at halftime.

Seth Spielmann gave Dell Rapids their second two-touchdown lead after scoring on a three-yard run.  Nick Boever added another score in the third quarter on a 19-yard run to push the Quarrier lead to 28-7.  The final West Central touchdown came in the third quarter on a 12-yard run.  Alex Kringen caught a 35-yard pass from Rentz in the fourth quarter for the final Quarrier score.

Dell Rapids finished the game with 370 yards of total offense, 106 passing yards and 264 rushing yards.  West Central finished with 216 yards of offense, 71 passing yards and 145 rushing yards.

Rentz finished 3-6 passing for 106 yards and two touchdowns.  Schuch had one catch for 65 yards and a touchdown.  Kringen had one catch for 35 yards for a touchdown, and Mason Schmidt had a catch for six yards.  Matt Gillogly led the rushing attack with 10 carries for 89 yards.  Spielmann had 16 carries for 88 yards and a touchdown.  Boever finished with nine carries for 43 yards and a touchdown.  Heinemann had six carries for 42 yards and a touchdown.  Defensively for Dell Rapids. Blake Reider, Cole VanDuyn, and Andrew Hegge all had seven tackles in the game.  Eddie Price finished with five tackles.  Heinemann and Gillogly both had four tackles.

Dell Rapids (3-1) will travel to Tri-Valley on Friday, September 22nd, to take on the Mustangs.  That game can be seen on Big Sioux Media.

Douglas John Sittig

Sittig, Doug new obit photoDouglas John Sittig passed away on September 11, 2017, after a 10 year battle with colon cancer.

Memorial services will begin at 11:00 AM Saturday, September 16, 2017 at St. George Catholic Church in Hartford. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

Visitation with the family present will be from 5:00 to 7:00 PM Friday, September 15, 2017 at Minnehaha Funeral Home in Dell Rapids.

Doug was born November 12, 1954, to Wesley and Evelyn (Odde) Sittig in Dell Rapids, SD. Doug began his education in a country school and at the age of seven attended school in Dell Rapids where he was an all-around athlete participating in football, basketball and track. He graduated from Dell Rapids High School in 1973. After graduation he enlisted in the US Army, serving his time in Germany. Doug was employed for over 31 years at Sanford Hospital as a power plant operator.

Doug enjoyed riding Harley Davidson motorcycles. He built and customized several motorcycles. In 1995 Doug met Deb (Spielmann) Bossman and for over 22 years they built a life together. They enjoyed many trips to the Sturgis Rally meeting up with their Sturgis Family. Doug and Deb were married on January 20, 2017. Doug also enjoyed hunting and fishing. He always liked to go where there weren’t any game wardens! Trips to hunt deer, duck and pheasant were always good times with good friends. During the last years, Doug really enjoyed his fishing trips with his brother, Steve and several friends. Doug was rumored to be the best bobber fisherman ever—a rumor he probably started!

Doug is survived by his wife, Deb; brother, Steve, Sioux Falls, mother-in-law, Lorna Spielmann, Hartford; brother and sister-in-laws, Gregg and Marsha Schneider, Sioux Falls, Darrell and Carolyn Spielmann, Hartford; aunt, Helen Stansell, Dell Rapids and several nieces, nephews, cousins, friends; lifelong friend, Kevin Park, Dell Rapids and his Sturgis Family.

Doug was preceded in death by his infant sister, Nyla; parents, Wesley and Evelyn; grandparents, John and Minnie Odde, Ed and Naomi Sittig; father-in-law, Delbert Spielmann; several aunts, uncles and cousin.

During Doug’s battle with cancer, he and Deb were supported by their family, friends, neighbors, power plant crew and co-workers. Deb and Doug would like you to know how much it was appreciated and to thank you for the prayers, care and sacrifices.

Quarrier Volleyball Wins 5th Match in a Row

NewDRLogoThe Dell Rapids Quarrier volleyball team continued their hot streak by winning their fifth match in a row on Thursday, September 15th.  Dell Rapids defeated Tri-Valley in straight sets by scores of 25-9, 25-15, 25-12 at Tri-Valley High School.  The Quarriers last loss came against West Lyon at the Canton Tournament on August 26th.

Head Coach Jessica Ahlers said, “The girls are really starting to come together as a team and trust each other on the floor, which is great to see. While it’s always wonderful wrapping up a week with two wins, we need to keep our focus on our upcoming games and continue to push forward and improve daily.”

The Dell Rapids offense had a balanced attack.  Maria Jackson led the team with six kills.  Jayda Knuppe and Sydney Stofferahn both had five kills each.  Trinity Gordon had three kills, and Mackenzie Grisham and Hannah Fletcher both had two kills in the match.  Knuppe and Stofferahn both recorded a block.  Brookek  Klein and Gordon both finished with 12 digs on the night.  Fletcher had eight digs, Grisham added seven digs, and Jackson had six digs.  Fletcher also finished the night with 16 set assists.

Dell Rapids (7-2) will look to keep the streak going in the next match against Garretson on Tuesday, September 19th, at home.  The match can be seen on Big Sioux Media.

Girls 4th, Boys 9th for Quarrier Cross Country

NewDRLogoThe Dell Rapids Quarrier cross country teams participated in the Charger Cross Country Invite held at Yankton Trails Park in Sioux Falls on Thursday, September 14th.

The girls team finished fourth with a team score of 69.  Sioux Falls Christian won the girls team title with 36 points.  Lennox was second with 43 points, and Beresford placed third with 44 points.  The boys team finished ninth with a team score of 162.  The top three team finishes were the same as the girls.  Sioux Falls Christian won with a team score of 30.  Lennox was second with 50 points, and Beresford placed third with 67 points.

The Quarriers will host the Dell Rapids Invite with the St Mary Cardinals on Wednesday, September 2oth, at Rocky Run Golf Course.
