Runner-up Finish for Quarriers at Dome

November 9, 2018 by Matt Larson, Big Sioux Media

DRvsTea_Dome_2018_5After a 5-4 regular season and a #7 seed in the class 11A playoffs, the Dell Rapids Quarrier football team knocked off the #2 seed Madison Bulldogs and #3 Dakota Valley Panthers in the playoffs to make it to the South Dakota Class 11A championship game against the Tea Area Titans at the Dakota Dome in Vermillion on Thursday, November 8th.  The Titans ended the magical run by Dell Rapids as the Quarriers earned runner-up honors after a 39-7 defeat.

The Quarrier defense started the game by forcing the Titans to punt on their opening drive, but Tea Area also forced Dell Rapids DRvsTea_Dome_2018_4to punt on their opening drive.  The Titans struck first on their next drive on an 80-yard touchdown run by Carter Slykhuis to give Tea Area a 7-0 lead with 7:13 to play in the first quarter.  The Titans would score again before the end of the first quarter.  Slykhuis threw a 28-yard halfback pass to Cade Clayberg that set up a one-yard touchdown run by Wyatt Van Tol.  The two-point conversion was no good, and Tea Area led 13-0 after one quarter of play.  The two defenses played tough throughout the second quarter.  Neither offense could get going, but Tea Area was able to put one more score on the board right before halftime on a three-yard touchdown run by Van Tol to give the Titans a 20-0 lead.

Dell Rapids received the kickoff to start the second half, but their opening drive of the third quarter resulted in another punt.  The Titans scored quickly on their next possession  when Hunter West connected with Trevor Cox on a 34-yard touchdown pass just three minutes into the quarter for a 27-0 lead.  The Quarriers finally got on the board with 7:04 to play in the quarter on a 65-yard touchdown run by Alex Kringen.  The extra point was good by Hunter Garry, and Dell Rapids cut the lead to 27-7.  The Quarriers then recovered the onside kick, but the Titan defense held strong and forced a punt.  Late into the third quarter, Tea Area scored again on a 22-yard field goal by Kade Stearns to increase their lead to 30-7.  The Titans forced Dell Rapids into a safety early in the fourth quarter, and then they scored again with 9:42 to play in the game on a 35-yard touchdown pass from West to Slykhuis for the 39-7 lead.

DRvsTea_Dome_2018_3The Quarriers finished with a total of 175 yards of offense, 135 rushing yards and 40 passing yards.  The Titans finished with 393 yards of offense, 200 rushing yards and 193 passing yards.  Dell Rapids was 2-13 on third down and 0-1 on fourth down.  The Titans were 6-11 on third down and also 0-1 on fourth down.

Eddie Price finished the game 3-8 passing for 40 yards.  Tayte Gleason had a 16 yard catch, Logan Stone had a 15 yards catch, and Kringen had a nine-yard catch.  Kringen also finished the game with seven carries for 87 yards and a touchdown.  Gleason had nine carries for 46 yards.  Coby Maeschen led the team with 11 tackles defensively.  Price had six tackles.  Logan Heim and Kenyon Shellum both had five tackles, while Drew Van Regenmorter, Tyler Wood, and Trevon Cross all had four tackles each.

After the game, the Quarriers had their welcome home celebration at the Dell Rapids Middle School commons area.  During the the opening remarks, Athletic Director Jeff Dvorak pointed to the trophy case and said, “Those things are going to say there.  They’re not going to live, they’re not going to breathe, and they’re not going to have stories.  These kids right here are the trophies.”

Head Coach Jordan Huska, during the welcome home, said, “These guys, to get here, worked their tails off all year.  It started last winter.  Most of these guys are in basketball, wrestling, or in the weight room, and that’s where it began.  Thank you players for all your hard work, time, and perseverance.”

Quarriers Fall in SoDak 16 to EPJ

November 6, 2018 by Matt Larson, Big Sioux Media

DRvsEPJ_VB_11-6-18The Dell Rapids Quarrier volleyball team had their 2018 season come to an end in the SoDak 16 on Tuesday, November 6th at Brandon Valley High School.  The Quarriers fell in straight sets to the Elk Point-Jefferson Huskies by scores of 25-11, 25-12, 25-16.

Elk Point-Jefferson set the tone early in the match.  The Huskies got out to a big 9-1 lead right away in the first set.  The Quarriers could never really get much going in the first set.  The Huskies grew the lead to 15 points at 18-3 on their way to the first set victory.

The Huskies started the second set with a slim 7-5 lead, but unfortunately for the Quarriers, Elk Point-Jefferson then went on an 11-4 run to take an 18-9 lead.  The Huskies found themselves in control and closed out the second set on a 7-3 run for the win.

The Quarriers found themselves quickly behind 5-0 to start the third set.  Dell Rapids was able to get to within three points a couple of time at 7-4 and 9-6.  Both times the Huskies were able to get the lead back to five points.  Elk Point-Jefferson was able to push their lead to eight points 19-11.  The Husckies closed out the set and match outscoring Dell Rapids 6-5 for the win.

Dell Rapids finished their season with a 21-9 overall record.

Dell Rapids will be welcoming a new restaurant to Main Street.  Papa’s Pub & Eatery will be opening soon for all to enjoy.

David and Rebecca Ohayon are the proud new owners of Papa’s Pub & Eatery.  Rebecca is a graduate of Dell Rapids St. Mary.  “We chose Dell Rapids for a few different reasons, and it all came together so perfectly,” Rebecca explained.  “The family connection first and foremost. We wanted to be in a community where we wouldn’t be just another place to eat, such as Sioux Falls. We wanted to be some where we could make a name for ourselves. We also love unique buildings, and David is a history buff, so the minute we walked into the Opera House building, he was in love.”

Opening a restaurant in Dell Rapids has been on the Ohayon family’s radar for quite some time, unfortunately, the timing was never quite right.  “This time around, it just all fell into plac,e and that’s how we landed in Dell Rapids,” the Ohayons stated.  “We think very highly of the city of Dell Rapids, and it is a beautiful town. We also understand the need for a casual dining experience in town. We would love to fill that need, while becoming a part of the growth of Dell Rapids.”

Papa’s Pub & Eatery is named after David’s late father, Daniel.  “We know his father is with us every single day, so naming this restaurant in honor of him just made perfect sense,” Rebecca said.

Together, David and Rebecca have over 30 years in the restaurant industry.  “From dishwasher to operations director, we have done it all,” Rebecca explained.  “David is well versed in both the kitchen and the front of house, whereas I strictly stay in the front of the house.” The Ohayons also have a leadership team in place that has many, many years of restaurant experience in the dining room as well as the kitchen. “David’s management style is unbeatable,” Rebecca explained.  “You work with him, not for him, and I truly believe that is why he has been extremely successful everywhere he has worked.” David throughout the years held many positions with companies such as Spezia, On the Border, Johnny Carinos, Beef ‘O’ Bradys, The Willows at Willow Run and more. “After seeing him work so hard for others, I am glad he is finally going to do it for himself and our family,” Rebecca stated.  Rebecca has worked in the restaurant business as well, at places such as The Monarch Steakhouse, Cody’s Tavern and Grill, The Minnehaha Country Club and Johnny Carinos.

The menu will be mainly American fare with some of David’s experiences and cultural background sprinkled in. Papa’s Pub & Eatery will offer other types of food such as Mexican and French along with other countries in the Mediterranean region as weekend features. “The menu isn’t quite finalized, but you can expect to see a few appetizers, burgers, steak/chicken/shrimp entrees, pastas, salads, specialty sandwiches and soup options,” Rebecca explained.  Papa’s Pub & Eatery will offer a lunch menu, dinner menu, children’s menu as well as desserts.  A full bar will also be included in the restaurant.

David and Rebecca have four children, Mia (10), Quinn (4), Andre (almost 2) and Genevieve (6 months old).  Whether it be a weekend of competitive softball, soccer tournament or gymnastics meet, the Ohayon family enjoys every minute of life with each other. “We stay extremely busy with four children, but they keep our hearts full, and that’s what matters most,” Rebecca said.  “The greatest things in life aren’t things.”

“Obviously, the timing was right for Dell Rapids as well as our family,” Rebecca explained on why choosing to open a new restaurant.  “It has always been a dream of David’s to have his own place, and we would talk about the different locations throughout the country that we would move to, but somehow, family always kept us grounded here.  Opening Papa’s Pub & Eatery in Dell Rapids will give us a place where we can share our love and passion for food and people!”

Papa’s Pub & Eatery plan to be open Tuesdays-Thursdays 11am-9pm; Friday and Saturday 11am-10pm. “We will eventually consider opening on Sundays in the morning,” Rebecca explained. “We want to offer an atmosphere for everyone – family gatherings, date night, business lunches, rehearsal dinners, you name it!”  Papa’s Pub & Eatery plans to open their doors early December.

Quarriers Punch Ticket to the Dome

November 3, 2018 by Matt Larson, Big Sioux Media

DRvsDV_FB_11-2-18For the second week in a row, the Dell Rapids Quarriers avenged an earlier season loss in the playoffs, this time punching their ticket to the South Dakota 11A Football Championship game.  The #7 seeded Quarriers defeated the #3 seeded Dakota Valley Panthers at Dakota Valley High School 25-22 on Friday, November 2nd.

The Quarriers and Panthers found themselves locked in a defensive battle through three quarters of the game.

Dakota Valley got off to a quick start after taking the opening kickoff into Dell Rapids territory.  The Panthers thought they had a early touchdown, but the play was negated by a holding penalty.  A few plays later, Logan Ellingson intercepted a pass in the endzone with 10:56 to go the first quarter.  Dakota Valley would score first later in the quarter.  Sam Chesterman had a nine-yard touchdown run with 6:21 to go in the first, and the made extra point gave the Panters an early 7-0 lead.  That lead was short-lived as Ellingson returned the ensuing kickoff 89 yards for a touchdown.  Hunter Garry made the extra point, and with 6:04 to play in the first quarter, the game was tied at 7-7.  The Quarriers took the lead late in the first quarter when Eddie Price connected with Ellingson on an 11-yard touchdown pass.  The extra point was blocked, but the Quarriers led 13-7 at the end of the first quarter.

The Quarriers dominated the time of possession in the second quarter.  Dell Rapids was able to get a turnover on downs deep in their own territory with 10:52 to play in the half.  The Quarriers offense then chewed up nearly nine minutes of clock on the next drive by converting on multiple and third and fourth downs.  Dell Rapids had a first and goal to go inside the Panther five-yard line with about 3:00 to play in the half.  The Quarriers ran the ball three times, but they were unable to get into the endzone.  On fourth down and two, Price threw an incomplete pass, and Dakota Valley held for the turnover on downs.  The Dell Rapids defensive held their ground and forced a punt with under a minute to play.  The Quarriers had the ball inside the 20-yard line, but Price had a pass intercepted in the endzone with 0:18 left on the clock.  Dakota Valley took a knee to end the half, and the Quarriers still led 13-7.

The defenses held tough through most of the third quarter.  The Quarriers forced another turnover on downs with 6:35 to play in the third quarter, but the offense could not capitalize.  After a Dell Rapids punt, Dakota Valley regained the lead on their next possession.  Chesterman scored on a five-yard run with 0:40 with the extra point good.  Dakota Valley led 14-13 after three quarters of play.

In the fourth quarter, however, the offenses took control.  Dell Rapids got the lead back after a two-yard run by Price with 9:50 to play.  The Quarriers attempted a two-point conversion, but it was no good.  Dell Rapids led 19-14.  In just over a minute, Dakota Valley took the lead back.  Chesterman scored his third touchdown of the game on a 50-yard run, and then he scored the two point conversion to give the Panthers a 22-19 lead with 8:39 to play.  Not to be outdone in the big-play department, Price threw a 64-yard touchdown pass to Ellingson on a great catch with 7:42 to go.  The extra point was blocked, but Dell Rapids took a 25-22 lead.

Dell Rapids had their defense step up big on two different occasions in the last half of the fourth quarter.  With 6:26 to go, the Quarriers forced a fumble, and Trevon Cross recovered the ball on the Dell Rapids 40-yard line.  Dell Rapids was forced to punt, however, and Dakota Valley got the ball back on their own 27-yard line with 4:49 to play.  The Panthers marched down the field to the Dell Rapids 28-yard line with 1:45 to play.  Chesterman appeared to score the g0-ahed touchdown on a 28-yard run, but a holding penalty again negated a Panther touchdown.  On a third down and twelve, the Quarrier defense stopped Chesterman after a six-yard gain setting up a fourth and six.  With 1:13 to go, Chesterman took the snap and ran to his left.  The defense shut down the corner, so Chesterman reversed his direction only to find Drew Van Regenmorter waiting.  Van Regenmorter tackled Chesterman for a 13-yard loss and a turnover on downs.  Price took a knee three times to run out the clock and give Dell Rapids the win.

The Quarriers finished with a total of 277 yards of offense, 174 passing yards and 103 rushing yards.  Dakota Valley had 318 yards of offense, 27 passing yards and 291 rushing yards.  Dell Rapids had 14 first downs, was 3-14 on third down attempts, and 2-3 on fourth down attempts.  Dakota Valley had 17 first downs, was 4-10 on third down attempts, and 1-4 on fourth down attempts.

Price was 9-14 passing for 174 yards, two touchdowns, and an interception.  Ellingson hauled in five passes for 141 yards and two touchdowns.  Tyler Wood had four catches for 33 yards.  Tayte Gleason led the team with nine carries for 68 yards.  Logan Stone had five carries for 12 yards.  Coby Maeschen led the team with 12 tackles.  Ellingson had 10 tackles and an interception.  Logan Heim added seven tackles, and Van Regenmorter and Price both finished with six tackles.

Dell Rapids (7-4) will play for the 11A title against the Tea Area Titans at the Dakota Dome in Vermillion on Thursday, November 8th at 7:30 p.m.  This will be the seventh trip in the last 12 years to the Dome for Dell Rapids and first trip since 2014.  The Quarriers won titles in 2008, 2010, 2011, 2012, and 2014.  Dell Rapids was runner-up in 2006.

Dells Elves Fundraiser Set for November 17th

November 2, 2018 by Matt Larson, Big Sioux Media

PrintThe Dell Elves fundraiser is set for Saturday, November 17th at Norby’s Bar and Grill starting with a meat raffle at 5:00 p.m. and the live auction at 7:00 p.m.

Dells Elves is a group of ladies who host a fundraiser every year to donate funds to the Christmas for Our Kids organization.  As a committee they ask local businesses and individuals to donate items for the live auction and raffle items.  The funds raised from the event benefit families that are nominated through Christmas for Our Kids program.  Last year the non-profit organization helped 146 children and provided gift cards to 60 families from the Dell Rapids community.

Donations are still being collected for this year’s fundraiser event.  They also have boards at Norby’s where people are able to purchase a square on for a chance to win a 55-inch TV, ½ processed hog from Bob’s Meat in Chester, a Remington 243 rifle with a gun case and box of ammunition, and a Mossberg Maverick 88 20 gauge shotgun with a gun case and box of ammunition.  Dells Elves have also partnered with the Quarry Rock Church for a raffle for the opportunity to win five guns, and all the proceeds will go to the Dells Elves to put towards the total raised.  This year for the live auction, there will be something new and exciting.  They are calling it Santa’s Top 5.  The group will be picking five donations and have them arranged on a special table.  Then they will auction off Yeti cups for a chance to pick one of the items.  More details on this will be disclosed as the event comes closer.

Last year the fundraiser event raised $26,000 dollars for this wonderful cause.  The group takes a portion of what is raised to donate to a couple other groups at the discretion of the committee.  In the past tey have donated to both food pantries in Dell Rapids.  As a committee, they strive to make this event more memorable every year.  The goal is to raise a little more than the year before.  Without the help of all the local businesses and individuals who donate and all the community support that shows up for the event, the group wouldn’t be as successful as they are every year.  The committee that holds this fundraiser consists of about 10 ladies, and they all strive to make it a huge success.

There are so many ways an individual or business can help with the fundraiser.  Donations are accepted up until the night of the event.  Dells Elves encourages everyone to come to Norby’s Bar and Grill in Dell Rapids on Saturday, November 17th for the big event.  The evening will begin with a meat raffle hosted by the Lions Club at 5:00o p.m.  The live auction will then start at 7:00 p.m., and raffle items are available from 5:00 p.m. until 9:00 p.m.  After the live auction is over, the drawing for the TV, ½ processed hog, two guns and also the Quarry Rock Church raffle will be held.  Need not be present to win those items.

“We could not make this event such a huge success without the support of the community, the support of Norby’s Bar and Grill for letting us take over their place the night of the event, and also to Landmark Realty and Lee Burgraff for auctioneering and his staff for donating their time the night of the event,” said committee member Serena Campbell.

If you have any questions or would like to donate an item please contact Serena Campbell at 605-321-9310.
