Cubs Win First Football Game of Season with Big Offense

The Alcester-Hudson Cubs football team used big offense to earn their firsts win of the season at home on Friday, August 30th.  The Cubs outlasted the Centerville Tornadoes 70-44.

Evan Brown had a 43-yard touchdown run in the first quarter, and Dariin Dykstra followed with a 30-yard touchdown run later in the quarter.  Both two-point conversions were made to give the Cubs a 16-0 lead.  The Tornadoes made the score 16-6 after a 70-yard touchdown pass before the end of the opening quarter.

Both teams put up big numbers in the second quarter.  Centerville scored the first two touchdowns of the second quarter and made both two-point conversions to go ahead 22-16.  Tommy Walth put the Cubs back in front after a one-yard touchdown run and two-point conversion.  Dykstra then had a 37-yard touchdown run and two-point conversion making the score 32-22.  Brown got a defensive touchdown on a 30-yard interception return.  Dystra found the endzone again on a four-yard touchdown run to put the Cubs ahead 46-22.  Centerville added a touchdown and two-point conversion before halftime to cut the lead to 46-30.

Alcester-Hudson had the only two touchdowns in the third quarter.  Walth had an 18-yard run and Ethan Bovill had a 46-yard interception return for a touchdown.  The Cubs converted both two-point conversions to make the score 62-30 going into the fourth quarter.  Centerville had a 13-yard pass for the first score of the fourth quarter.  Walth scored again on a seven-yard run.  The Tornadoes added one more score later in the quarter to make the final score 70-44.

The Cubs finished with 325 yards of offense, all on the ground.  Centerville had 514 yards of offense, 131 rushing yards and 383 passing yards.  Dykstra had six carries for 110 yards and three touchdowns.  Brown had eight carries for 93 yards and a touchdown.  Walth added 11 carries for 81 yards and three touchdowns.  Bovill had eight tackles and an interception.  Jackson Meyer finished with 11.5 tackles.  Dykstra had 5.5 tackles, and Walth finished with 4.5 tackles.  Brown added an interception.
