Cubs Win First Volleyball Match of Season in Five Sets

The Alcester-Hudson Cubs hosted the Menno Wolves to start the volleyball season on Tuesday, August 22nd.  The Cubs won their first home match in five sets by scores of 16-25, 25-15, 21-25, 25-15, and 15-10.

Alcester-Hudson got out to a quick 5-1 lead.  Menno then put together an 11-0 run for a 12-5 lead.  The Cubs got within three points, 16-13, but the Wolves ended the first set on a 9-3 run for a 25-16 win.  Alcester-Hudson got out to another fast start in the second set.  They led 7-1 and then extended that lead to 14-4.  Menno got within six, 14-8, but that was as close as they would get.  The Cubs took the second set 25-15.

The third set went back and fourth for most of the game.  The two teams were tied 8-8 and then again 13-13.  Menno pulled away late by a score of 20-14.  Alcester-Hudson got within two, 20-18, but the Wolves took the win 25-21.  Another quick start by the Cubs put them in the driver’s seat for the fourth set.  They started with a 9-3 lead and slowly built on it throughout the set.  They led 20-12, 23-14 and then took the win 25-15 to force a fifth set.

The Cubs rode the momentum of the fourth set into the fifth and final set.  They started with a 6-0 run.  Menno got within three points, 8-5, but the Cubs didn’t let them get any closer.  They pulled away 12-6 and eventually won the set, and the match, 15-10.

Alexis Gray had 19 kills, 10 digs, three blocks, and two ace serves.  Elly Doering finished with seven kills, five digs, and three blocks.  Devin Hongslo had six kills.  Carly Patrick added five kills, four ace serves, and three digs.  Hannah Ahart had 29 set assists, 21 digs, and six ace serves.  Jenna Manning finished with 20 digs.
