Cubs Football Season Ends in First Round of Playoffs

The Alcester-Hudson Cubs football team finished the 2022 regular season with a 7-1 record and entered the 9A playoffs as the #8 seed.  The Cubs hosted the #9 seeded Canistota Hawks in the opening round on Thursday, October 20th.  The Hawks scored 30 points in the middle two quarters for a 42-24 victory.

The Cubs got on the board first on a three-yard touchdown run by Evan Brown.  Mateo Kleinhans threw a pass to William Hallaway for the two-point conversion and an 8-0 lead with 7:35 in the opening quarter.  Canistota tied the game on a 73 yard touchdown run and two-point conversion with 5:39 left in the quarter.

Alcester-Hudson regained the lead early in the second quarter.  With 9:56 to play in the half, Kleinhans had a 10-yard touchdown pass to Ethan Bovill.  The two-point conversion was no good, and the Cubs led 14-8.  The Hawks tied the game again with 7:11 left in the quarter on a six-yard touchdown run.  The last lead for the Cubs game with 2:24 in the second quarter.  The defense recorded a safety giving Alcester-Hudson a 16-14.

Canistota then scored the next four touchdowns.  With just :35 left in the half, the Hawks had a 32-yard touchdown pass to take a 20-16 lead into halftime.  Canistota then scored with 7:32 to go in the third quarter on a 15-yard pass.  The two-point conversion made the score 28-16.  Another score and two-point conversion with 3:06 to play in the third quarter extended the lead to 36-16.  The final score for the Hawks came with 11:28 to go in the game on a one-yard run to lead 42-16.

Kleinhans added one more touchdown pass with 8:03 to play.  His eight-yard pass was caught by Hallaway for a touchdown..  Kleinhans then scored the two-point conversion for the 42-24 final score.

The Cubs finished with 358 yards of offense, 141 passing yards and 217 rushing yards.  The Hawks had 508 yards of offense, 136 passing yards and 372 rushing yards.

Kleinhans was 12-23 passing for 141 yards, two touchdowns, and an interception.  Hallaway had six catches for 81 yards and a touchdown.  Jose Topete-Lopez had a catch for 23 yards.  Tommy Walth had two catches for 15 yards, and Bovill had a catch for 10 yards and a touchdown.  Brown had 13 carries for 96 yards and a touchdown.  Kleinhans had 16 carries for 76 yards, and Topete-Lopez had 10 carries for 38 yards.  Hallaway and Brown both had 6.5 tackles.  Dominic Van Egdom had 4.5 tackles.  Topete-Lopez and Bovill both had 3.5 tackles each.
