Cubs Suffer First Loss of Season

The Alcester-Hudson Cubs suffered their first loss of the season at the Avon Pirates on Friday, September 30th.  Avon scored the first three touchdowns in the game, which helped them to a 36-22 win.

The first two Pirate touchdowns came in the first quarter.  The first was a 10-yard touchdown pass with 4:28 in the quarter.  The second score was on a 24-yard touchdown run with just :10 on the clock.  One of the two-point conversions was made for a 14-0 lead at the end of the first quarter.

Avon got another score with 5:06 left in the half on a a five-yard run.  Another two-point conversion made the score 22-0.  Mateo Kleinhans got the Cubs on the board with a 16-yard touchdown run with 2:41 left in the second.  That cut the lead to 22-6 in favor of Avon, which was also the halftime score.

The Pirates extended their lead after a 40-yard touchdown run with 6:50 in the third quarter.  The two-point conversion was no good, and Avon led 28-6.  Kleinhans had his second rushing touchdown with 4:16 left in the quarter, this time from seven yards away.  The two-point conversion made cut the lead to 28-14.  Alcester-Hudson got within six points after Kleinhans had a 23-yard touchdown pass to Owen Bovill with :33 left in the third.  Evan Brown scored the two-point conversion, and the Cubs trailed 28-22 heading into the fourth quarter.

Avon got a score very early in the fourth quarter on a 65-yard run with 11:17 to play.  The two-point conversion made the score 36-22.  Neither team found the end zone again in the game.

The Cubs finished with 275 yards of offense, 149 passing yards and 126 rushing yards.  The Pirates finished with 454 yards of offense, 434 of those coming on the ground.

Kleinhans was 12-23 passing for 149 yards, one touchdown, and one interception.  Brown had two catches for 44 yards.  William Hallaway had four catches or 42 yards.  Bovill had two catches for 36 yards and a touchdown.  Dominic Van Egdom had a catch for 27 yards.  Kleinhans also had eight carries for 72 yards and two touchdowns.  Josee Topete-Lopez had eight carries for 46 yards.

Van Egdom led the defense with nine tackles.  Hallaway ended with eight tackles.  Kleinhans finished with seven tackles.  Brown had 6.5 tackles, and Jensen Christensen and Aden Moller each had six tackles.  Moller also had an interception.
