Cubs Defense Key to Season-Opening Win

The Aclester-Hudson Cubs defense made key plays all night long against the Centerville Tornadoes at home on Friday, August 19th.  The Cubs earned a 48-8 win to start the season with a win.

First Half

The Cubs scored first with 2:27 to play in the first quarter.  Evan Brown had a five-yard run.  The two-point conversion was good, and the Cubs led 8-0.  The Tornadoes made a quick drive down the field, but Owen Bovill had one of his two interceptions at the goal line with 1:06 left in the first quarter.

Alcester-Hudson added to their lead early in the second quarter.  Mateo Kleinhans connected with Dominic Van Egdom on an 81-yard touchdown pass to extend the lead to 14-0. Centerville cut into the lead, 14-8, after a touchdown and two-point conversion with 4:50 to play in the first half.  The Tornadoes had an opportunity to tie the game or take the lead, but the Cub defense forced a turnover on downs.  On the very next play, Kleinhans had a 42-yard touchdown run to make the score 20-8.  That was the score at halftime.

Second Half

The Cubs lost fumbles on their first two possessions of the second half, but the defense held strong.  Kleinhans got an interception on defense with 6:39 to play in the third quarter with the score still 20-8.  After a big pass play to Van Egdom, Kleinhans had a three-yard touchdown run with 3:05 to go in the quarter for a 28-8 lead.

The Aclester-Hudson defense was not done.  Ethan Bovill got an interception with :19 in the third quarter to keep the score 28-8 heading into the fourth quarter.  Kleinhans got his third rushing touchdown on a 13-yard run with 9:36 remaining.  One minute later O. Bovill got his second interception and returned it 50 yards for a touchdown making the score 42-8.  The Cubs added one more touchdown with 3:14 left in the game.  Darin Dykstra scored on an eight-yard run.

The Cubs travel to Corsica-Stickney on Friday, August 26th.
