Third Quarter Run Sparks Win for Mustang Girls

The Tri-Valley Mustang girls used a 7-0 run in the first minute of the third quarter to pull away from the Baltic Bulldogs at home on Tuesday, January 4th.  The Mustangs earned their fourth win with a 51-34 victory.

The first two quarters of the game were an offensive struggle for both teams.  Tri-Valley held a 12-8 lead at the end of the first quarter.  Baltic scored the first four points of the second quarter and led 13-12 with 6:00 to play in the half.  The Mustangs finished the quarter with a 7-3 scoring advantage for a 19-16 halftime lead.

The 7-0 run to start the third quarter got the Mustang offense rolling.  They extended their 10-point lead to 17, 36-19, heading into the fourth quarter.  The lead grew to a game-high 24 points, 47-23, with 3:50 to play in the game.  Baltic did finish the game game on an 11-4 run.

Tri-Valley shot 33% (16-49) from the field, 25% (5-20) from three-point area, and 56% (14-25) from the free-throw line.  Baltic shot just 28% (13-46) in the game, made only one three-pointer, and was 7-12 from the free-throw line.  The Tri-Valley defense forced 18 Baltic turnovers, and the Mustangs out-rebounded Baltic 36-26 in the game.

Paige Jewett led the team with 21 points, six rebounds, three steals, and two assists.  Lauren Grinde had eight points, seven rebounds, a steal, and an assist.  Stephanie Buchmann also had eight points along with three steals, two rebounds, and two assists.  Ava Pearson had seven points, nine rebounds, and four blocks.  Madelyn Wenzel finished with six points and nine rebounds.

Tri-Valley (4-2) will host the Mt Vernon/Plankinton Titans on Thursday, January 6th.
