The West Central Trojan girls basketball team defeated the Sioux Falls Jefferson Cavaliers in a close game on Thursday, December 30th. Neither team had a lead of more than eight points the entire game as the Trojans won 45-42.
West Central held the largest lead of the game at eight points in the first half. The Trojans built a 15-7 lead by the end of the first quarter and was able to maintain that lead in the second quarter. West Central continued to lead by eight, 25-17, at halftime.
The Cavaliers slowly chipped away at the lead in the third quarter and eventually tied the game 29-29 with 3:30 to play in the quarter. Sioux Falls Jefferson took their first lead at 31-30 just a minute later. From that point the two teams went back and forth. The Trojans were able to head into the fourth quarter with a slim 37-34 advantage. The fourth quarter continued to go back-and-forth. West Central held a 43-42 lead with about :10 to play. Rylee Haldeman sank two free-throws to push the lead to 45-42. A last second three-pointer by the Cavaliers was no good.
West Central finished the game shooting 31% (16-52) from the field, just 26% (6-23) on three-pointers, and 54% (7-13) from the free-throw line. The Cavaliers were 38% (15-39) shooting, 37% (7-19) on three-pointers, and just 36% (5-14) from the free-throw line.
Addy Kramer had a double-double for the Trojans. Kramer finished with 13 points and 10 rebounds. Haldeman had nine points, six rebounds, four steals, and two assists. Tabor Teel also had nine points and six rebounds. Cambell Fischer had seven points and three rebounds.
The Trojans (4-0) will travel to Elk Point to play the Elk Point-Jefferson Huskies on Tuesday, January 4th.
