Last Inning Rally Falls Short for Dell Rapids Legion

June 28, 2020 by Matt Larson, Big Sioux Media

The Dell Rapids Legion baseball team scored two times and had the bases loaded in the bottom of the seventh, but the late inning rally was not enough to make the comeback against McCook/Miner on Friday, June 26th.  McCook/Miner held on for a 5-2 win at Rickeman Field.

McCook/Miner rallied for a big first inning.  After two of the first three hitters were retired, McCook/Miner followed with a double and two singles to score three runs for an early 3-0 lead.  Another run was added in the top of the third inning after a triple and an overthrow to make the score 4-0.  McCook/Miner added one more run in the top of the fifth inning to push their lead to 5-0.

Dell Rapids made the game interesting in the bottom of the seventh inning.  Jake Steineke starting the inning with a single, but the next two batters were retired on fly balls.  Ty Wood kept the inning alive with a single.  Riley Peter brought home the first run on an RBI single.  Mason Goeken added a single to load the bases with two outs for Dell Rapids.  Logon Stone added an RBI single to score another run and keep the bases loaded with two outs, but the final out was recorded on a strikeout to stop the comeback.

Stone had two hits and an RBI.  Goeken also had two hits in the game.  Peter finished with one hit and an RBI.  Steineke and Wood each had one hit.  Stone started the game pitching going four innings while giving up five runs, two earned, on six hits with four walks and two strikeouts.  Brandon Kubly pitched the final three innings giving up no runs and no hits with four strikeouts.

Dell Rapid (4-5) will travel to Madison on Monday, June 29th, then head to Tea on Tuesday, June 30th, and finish a three-straight day stretch with a home game against Volga on Wednesday, July 1st.
