The Dell Rapids St Mary Cardinal boys basketball team won their third straight game of the year at the Entringer Classic in Brookings on Saturday, December 30th. The Cardinals defeated the Elkton-Lake Benton Elks 64-49.
After the Elks had a 5-2 lead with 5:47 to go in the first quarter, the Cardinals finished the quarter on a 23-8 run to take a 25-13 lead after the first quarter. The Elks cut the lead a little by halftime. St Mary led 36-27 at the break. The Elks opened the third quarter on a 7-3 run to cut the lead to five points with 5:24 to play, but St Mary answered with a 9-4 run to end the quarter and extend their lead to 48-38 at the end of the third quarter. St Mary then outscored the Elks 16-11 in the final quarter for the win.
The Cardinals finished the game shooting 38% from the field, 42% from three-point area, and 67% from the free-throw line. St Mary had 31 total team rebounds, 10 assists, six steals, and only turned the ball over nine times in the game.
Connor Libis, named the game’s MVP, finished with 22 points, seven assists, and two rebounds. Connar Kangas had 18 points and two rebounds. Luke Brown also finished in double figures with 15 points and had three rebounds. Max Herber had nine rebounds in the game, and Weston Geraets had seven rebounds.
St Mary (3-2) will host Deubrook Area on Friday, January 5th. The game can be seen on Big Sioux Media.
