After a couple of tough games to start the season, the Dell Rapids St Mary Cardinal boys basketball team earned their first win of the season on Friday, December 15th. The Cardinals defeated the Estelline Redmen 63-47 in Estelline. The Cardinals led at every quarter break in the game.
St Mary led 20-11 at the end of the first quarter. They continued to increase the lead in the second quarter by outscoring Estelline 17-9 to take a 37-20 lead at halftime. The Cardinals lead 53-34 after three quarters of play and held their largest lead of the game at 22 points with 7:16 to play in the game.
The Cardinals finished the game shooting 32% from the field, 15% from beyond the three-point line, and 68% from the free-throw line. St Mary had a total of 50 team rebounds, nine team steals, and turned the ball over 15 times.
Max Herber finished the game with a double-double for St Mary. Herber had 26 points and 13 rebounds. Connor Libis had 16 points and two steals. Luke Brown also finished in double figures with 11 points and had seven rebounds. Weston Geraets had eight points and 10 rebounds.
The Cardinals (1-2) will host De Smet on Tuesday, December 19th. The game can be seen on Big Sioux Media.
