Leonard Kohlmeyer

Leonard KohlmeyerLeonard Fredrick Kohlmeyer, age 85, of Huron, passed away on Sunday, Dec. 7, 2014, at the Violet Tschetter Memorial Home in Huron. His funeral will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at Mount Calvary Lutheran Church in Huron, with burial at Restlawn Memory Gardens Cemetery in Huron, and Military Honors by the Huron Veterans Council.

Visitation will be from 2 to 7 p.m. with the family present from 5 to 7 p.m. on Friday, Dec. 12, at Welter Funeral Home with a prayer service to begin at 6:30 p.m.; or one hour prior to the service at the church on Saturday. Condolences may be left at www.welterfuneralhome.com.

Leonard Fredrick Kohlmeyer, the son of Carl and Elsie (Whitthoeft) Kohlmeyer, was born on July 17, 1929, on the family farm near Wolsey, SD. Leonard met the love of his life, Beverly Schmaal one Sunday after church at her parent’s gas station. Beverly later moved to Salem, Ore. The couple was married on Sept. 1, 1957, at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Salem. Beverly joined her new husband, as they started their life together in Huron. The couple has lived in Huron ever since. To their happy home, they added five children: Leonard Jr., Douglas, Cheryl, Marcel, and Karla. They were saddened by the death of their daughter, Karla on Feb. 22, 1993.

Most blessed and grateful for sharing Leonard’s life are his wife Beverly of Huron; son Leonard Jr. (Addy) Kohlmeyer and stepgrandchildren: Joe Bartelle, Andy Bartelle of Tuscon, Ariz., and Jennifer (Steve) Lujan their children, Julio, Athena, and Stasia of LA. Son, Douglas (Jean) Kohlmeyer of Green Bay, Wis., and their children: Kelsie, Kaleb, and Riley and stepgrandchildren Summer (RJ) Tilleman, and stepgreat-grandchildren: Aryan, Peyton, and Toby, step-grandchild Samara (Andy) Frelick and stepgreat-grandchildren: Harley, Lily and Charlotte all of Green Bay, Wis. His daughter Cheryl (Rich) Schriever of Dell Rapids, SD and grandchildren: Cody Breck and Karla Breck of Sioux Falls, and Emily Breck of Dell Repids. His son, the Rev. Marcel (Deborah) Kohlmeyer of Orchard, Neb., and grandchildren: Gabrielle, Madalyn, and Andrew. Leonard’s brothers: Nathaniel (Corinne) Kohlmeyer of Huron, and Max (Phyllis) Kohlmeyer of Wolsey; sister Amanda Noack of Huron; brother-in-law, Donald Schmaal, LaPine, Ore.; two sisters-in-law: Phyllis Kohlmeyer, Huron, and Marlys McPherson, Iowa; and many nieces and nephews.

Leonard was preceded in death by his parents; daughter, Karla; infant brother, Marcel; brother Marcus; sister, Doris; daughter-in-law, Bee Kohlmeyer; mother and father-in-law, Art and Elda Schmaal; brothers-in-law: Arnold Noack and Larry Schmaal; and sister-in-law, Susan Schmaal.

Stephen Van Dam

Stephen Van DamStephen Van Dam, 65, formerly of Dell Rapids, passed away on Saturday, December 13, 2014 at the Golden Living Center in Salem, SD. Stephen will be buried in a private ceremony on December 22, 2014. A celebration of Stephen’s life will take place on December 22, at 11:00 a.m. at The American Legion in Dell Rapids, SD.  Stephen Henry Van Dam Sr. born February 27th 1949 in Flandreau, SD passed away peacefully December 13th 2014 at Salem, South Dakota. Stephen was a member of the Flandreau Santee Sioux Tribe. He served his country proudly in the Army from November 6th 1968 to October 20th 1970. Stephen fought in the Vietnam War from November 13th 1969 to October 19th 1970. On October 20th 1970 he was honorably discharged.

 Stephen enjoyed being a member of the local shooting club, hunting, fishing, cooking & being an EMT. He loved taking his beloved dog “soup bone” for rides on his scooter.

Stephen is survived by his son Stephen Jr. and daughter-in-law Desi Van Dam of Black Hawk, SD; his daughter Amy and son-in-law Matt Oppedhal of Helena, MT; daughter Lindsay Van Dam of Gilbert, Arizona; and son Brandon and daughter-in-law Cassandra Van Dam of Mesa, Arizona. Sisters: Bobbie (Dick) Christensen, Jeanette (Gene) Arnold, Kathy (Jerry) Benning, Laurie (Bill) Arbes, Shelly Buhr, Kristi (Dean) Madison, Monica (Dale) VanDeWiele , Marilyn (Rick) Williams, Marsha (David) Schlueter, Diane Van Dam (Willis), Tracy Van Dam (John). Brothers: Doug (Nerda) Van Dam & Robert Jr (Kristine) Van Dam. Four Grandsons and four Granddaughters and numerous nieces and nephews. He is preceded in death by his parents Robert Sr. & Goldie Van Dam, brother Rodney & sister Valerie.

Richard Mengenhauser

Richard MengenhauserRichard E. Mengenhauser, 73, passed away Tuesday, December 9, 2014 at Avera McKennan Hospital in Sioux Falls. Richard was born on April 15, 1941 to Edward and Florence (Schroeder) Mengenhauser in Sioux Falls, SD. The family moved from Mitchell, SD to rural Moody County where he received his education at Bell School and graduated from Egan High School in 1959. Richard joined the National Guard Battery, 2nd Battalion, 147th Artillery and his unit was called up during the Berlin Crises. He married LaVonne Krogmann in September of 1964 in Flandreau, SD. Richard worked for Ahlers, Dale’s Firestone, Dale’s Alignment, Julson Motors and Ramsdell F & M. Richard married Becky Litka on December 3, 1992 in Flandreau. After retiring he worked for several area farmers. Richard was a member of Ss. Simon and Jude Catholic Church, enjoyed restoring his tractor, NASCAR and his grandkids.

Richard is survived by his wife Becky, children, Stephen (Peggy Johnson), Mengenhauser, Brookings, Paula (Willie Turner) Mengenhauser, Sioux Falls, Seth (Katie Gagnon) Litka, Dell Rapids, four grandkids, Kaitlin, Kaden, Brennan, Finleigh, his mother Florence, Flandreau, brother Roger (Glenda) Mengenhauser, Boerne, TX, two sisters Jean (Jerry) Berger, Cedar Rapids, IA, Jayne (Kim) Verhey, Madison, sister-in-law Elena Mengenhauser, Madison and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded by his father and brother Garland.

Mass of Christian Burial will be Friday, December 12, 2014, 11:00 a.m. at Ss. Simon and Jude Catholic Church with burial in Hillside Cemetery, Egan. Visitation will be 5:00 – 7:00 p.m. Thursday with a 7:00 p.m. scripture service at Skroch Funeral Chapel. Condolences may be left at www.skrochfc.com

Russell Dring

Russell DringRussell G. Dring, 76, of Redfield died Tuesday, Dec. 2, 2014, at Select Specialty Hospital in Sioux Falls.  Mass of Christian burial will be Saturday, Dec. 6, 2014, at 10:30 a.m. at St. Bernard’s Catholic Church in Redfield. Father Christopher Hughes will celebrate the mass.  Burial will be in Greenlawn Cemetery. Visitation will be Friday from 1 to 8 p.m., with a rosary at 6 p.m. at Thelen Funeral Home in Redfield. Russell was born July 30, 1938, in Minneapolis, Minn. to Carroll and Frances (Brula) Dring. The family moved to Rockham when Russ was 5 years old. Russ attended St. Mary’s Catholic School in Zell and graduated from Redfield High School in 1956. He worked for the railroad for a few years.  On Aug. 29, 1959, Russ married Marion Newman in Zell. He worked for NWPS as a lineman for 39 years.

Russ enjoyed all sports and especially enjoyed watching his grandchildren in Kearney, Neb., participate in soccer, track and football. He was an avid trapper and fisherman and loved to hunt with Jeff, Jay and the Newmans at the Newman Farm. Russ fully enjoyed his retirement, planting a big garden, spending time with his buddies and the dog “Blue” at Redfield Body Shop.

Russ leaves wonderful memories to his wife of 55 years, Marion; his sons: Jeff (Lisa Knoff) Dring of Dell Rapids and Jay (Julie) Dring of Columbus, Neb.; his grandchildren: Kelli (Chad) Fleek, Rustin Dring and Lucas Knoff; his aunt Geraldine Dring; brothers-in-law: Milt (Devonna) Newman, Merlin (Judy) Newman, Maurice Newman, Marvin (Dorinne) Newman; his sisters-in-law: Marlis Freeburg and Melva Olson; and many nieces and nephews.

His son’s dogs, Bella, Harley and Ace will also miss Russ. He was preceded in death by his parents; nephew, Jim Freeburg; and aunts and uncles. Russ’s sense of humor and his love of jokes will be missed.

Ruth Zweifel

Ruth ZweifelFuneral services for Ruth Zweifel, 84, of Scotland, South Dakota passed away on Saturday, November 22 at the Good Samaritan Society of Scotland. Her funeral will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Wednesday, November 26, 2014 at United Methodist Church in Scotland. Burial will follow in the Rosehill Cemetery, Scotland. Visitation will be held on Tuesday, November 25 at the Goglin Funeral Home from 3:00 p.m. until a 7:30 p.m. prayer service there, family will be present from 6:00 p.m. until 7:30 p.m. Funeral arrangements are being handled by Goglin Funeral Home of Scotland. Ruth Alice Zweifel was born April 15, 1930 to William and Martha (Schneider) Retzer. She graduated from Scotland High School in 1948 and married Don Zweifel in Sioux City, Iowa on June 19, 1948. She worked at the Bon Homme County courthouse for a short time. Ruth and Don worked together in the trucking and corn shelling business. She did the accounting and drove a truck.

Ruth loved to dance to the music of the 40’s and 50’s. She was a competitive bowler on the Scotland Transfer team. Her talents included baking, sewing, and crocheting. She enjoyed playing Scrabble and doing crossword puzzles. Ruth loved her family and always thought of others first.

She was a member of the Scotland United Methodist Church and served as the financial secretary.

Grateful for having shared her life are a daughter, Theresa (Terry) and her husband LaVerne (Joe) Hoff of Olivet; a son Greg and his wife Cindy (Cannon) Zweifel of Scotland; five grandchildren and their families: Troy and Teresa (Green) Hoff and their children Tiana and Tyler of Covington, Georgia; David and Kristin (Wynia) Hoff and their daughters Audrey and Madeline of Sioux Falls; Stacie (Zweifel) and Seth Peterson and their children Cohen and Vivien of Sioux Falls; Paul and Alyssa (Slykhuis) Zweifel and their children Parker, Aspen, and Raegan of Dell Rapids; and Jared and Jenny (Hamberger) Zweifel and their son Henry of Scotland; a sister Alvera Weinke of Yankton and a brother Ron Retzer of Santa Maria, California. Ruth was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Don, and brother-in-law Robert Weinke.

Matilda Fritza

Tillie was born October 7th, 1926 to Henry and Margaret (Kimber) Oster in Ethan, SD. She attended and graduated from Ethan High school and then received her teaching certificate from Springfield Normal School. She began her teaching career in a Country School in Davison County. Tillie was united in marriage to Leo Fritza on June 11th, 1946 in Ethan. They moved to a farm west of Parkston, SD where they raised their family and resided for 64 years. While raising her family, she resumed her more than 30 year teaching career. During this time, she graduated with a bachelors degree in Elementary Education from Dakota Wesleyn University. Tillie was a long time member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church where she was involved in Catholic Daughters for over 60 years, Altar Society, study club, bible study and was a RENEW leader. She was also a member of the Parkston American Legion auxiliary.

She is survived by five children: Patricia (Justin) Foss of Minneapolis, MN; Diane (Bob) Gordon of Montrose, SD; Kathy (David) Talsma of Spearfish, SD; Dan (Carol) Fritza of South Sioux City, NE; and Janet (Perry) Herrboldt of Tea, SD; 10 grandchildren; 7 great-grandchildren; 2 sisters, Mary Barnes of Portland, OR and Phyllis (Clair) Lambert of Artesian, SD; 3 sisters-in-law, Devonia Oster of Mitchell, SD; Vi Fritza of Mt Vernon, SD; and Marie Roemen of Dell Rapids, SD; and a brother-in-law, Norb (Joan) Fritza of Parkston.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Leo; a son, David; an infant daughter, Carol; 3 brothers, Francis, Tony and John; and 3 sisters, Sr. Margaret Mary, June and Ruth.

Edna Wall

Edna WallOn December 2, 2014, Edna Wall passed on to join her husband, Ted and the rest of her family and friends. Edna was born in Dell Rapids on September 4, 1916 to Louis and Mary LeBrun. She was the youngest and last survivor of ten children. Edna married Theodore Wall in 1938. They lived on the family farm near Dell Rapids, where Edna grew up, until 1972 when she and Ted retired and moved to their home in Dell Rapids. Edna moved to Wisconsin in 2009 to be closer to her daughter, Sonja.

Edna was a lifetime member of Saint Mary Parish. She was one of the nine proud members of St. Mary High School Class of 1934. Edna was an active member of the altar society and the Dell Rapids Auxiliary. For many years she enjoyed selling “Avon” and being a member of the Red Hat Society as well as hosting many a card party. Cooking was also one of her pleasurers. Her cinnamon rolls were unsurpassed and still have her children wondering how she made them.

She loved her family, her church, and her many friends. She is preceded in death by parents, nine brothers and sisters, her husband, Ted; her son, Louie and his wife, Betty; her daughter, Nancy and her husband, Rex; her son-in-law, Chuck Monner and granddaughter, Allie Thanig.

She is survived by her son, Conrad “Brick” (Martha) Wall of Tucson, AZ; her daughter, Sonja Monner of Somerset, WI; her five grandchildren, Shannon Wall Calden, Ellen Wall Tucker, Ted Wall, Sarah Monner Thanig and Kate Monner Waskul and nine great grandchildren.

Memorials should be directed to St. Mary School.

Lois Skaar

Lois SkaarLois M. Skaar, 93, formerly of Sioux Falls, SD, passed away on Saturday, November 29, 2014 at the Custer Regional Senior Care in Custer, SD. Her memorial service will begin at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, December 6, 2014 at First Lutheran Church in Sioux Falls. The interment service will be on Saturday at Mt. Lois M. Stangeland was born to Jonas and Carrie Stangeland on December 6, 1920 at Primghar, Iowa. She graduated from Gaza High School, Gaza, Iowa in 1939 and Waldorf College, Forest City, Iowa in 1941. She worked for the O’Brien County Abstract Company in Primghar, Iowa from 1941-1945. On May 27, 1945 she married E. S. Skaar at Paulina, Iowa. She was an active church member and Pastor’s wife in Cameron and Glenwood City, Wisconsin; Hudson, Dell Rapids, Sioux Falls, Britton, and Renner South Dakota. In 1987 she and E. S. retired in Sioux Falls. They moved to Prairie Creek Senior Living, Sioux Falls, SD in 2007. E. S. passed away in May of 2009. In June of 2013 she became a resident of the Custer Senior Care facility, Custer, SD.

She is survived by her brother, Elmer (June) Stangeland of Primghar, Iowa; her son, Jon (Jane) Skaar of Custer, SD; her daughter, Joy (Randy) Bisping of Spring Creek, Michigan; 3 grandchildren and 4 great-grandchildren.

Margaret was born in Colton, SD, on August 30, 1931 to Andrew and Ida (Burgers) DeJong. She grew up and attended school in Colton. She graduated from Colton High School in 1950. She worked in Sioux Falls until she was married. She married Raymond Crisp on November 28, 1953. They couple made their home on a farm east of Dell Rapids.

She was a member of the United Methodist Church and the United Methodist Women in Dell Rapids. Margaret loved to visit with people. She enjoyed the farm and going out to eat with Raymond.

She is survived by her husband of 61 years, Raymond of Dell Rapids; her son, Gary (Linda) Crisp of Brandon; her daughters, Nancy (Curt) Andersen of Norfolk, NE and Cindy Crisp of Dell Rapids; her grandchildren, Timothy (Kimberley) Bares of Acton, CA and Jessica (Josh) Willprecht of Dell Rapids; her great grandson, Jacob; her brother, John DeJong of Sioux Falls; her sisters, Julia (Dean) Amdahl and Carol (Doug) Biegger both of Loveland, CO and her many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents.
