Gerry Bunkers

Gerry BunkersGerald “Gerry” A. Bunkers, 78, passed away Thursday, October 26, 2017, at Bethany Home in Sioux Falls, SD. A Mass of Christian burial will begin at 10:30 a.m. Thursday, November 2, at Holy Spirit Catholic Church in Sioux Falls. Visitation will begin at 6 p.m. Wednesday at Heritage Funeral Home in Sioux Falls, followed by a prayer service at 7 p.m.  On-line condolences may be left at the Zinzley Funeral Home website.

A longtime resident of Sioux Falls and fixture in the brokerage community, Gerry was born May 12, 1939, to Andrew and Agnes (Dresch) Bunkers in Dell Rapids, SD. He attended St. Mary’s High School in Dell Rapids, and he went on to earn a business degree at the University of South Dakota. During college, he served in the Army ROTC program.

On June 21, 1963, he married Donna Warn at the Cathedral of St. Joseph in Sioux Falls. The couple moved to Omaha, NE, where Gerry worked several years in construction management. They later moved to Salem, SD, where they owned and operated the Chess Lounge and Pleasant Acres Restaurant. Gerry later earned his brokerage license and worked for A.G. Edwards in Sioux Falls, earning several corporate awards during his decades-long career with the firm.

Gerry was a member of Holy Spirit Catholic Church. He was a longtime member of the Knights of Columbus and the Kiwanis Club. Gerry was an avid hunter, fisherman, boater and skier, but he truly loved spending time with relatives and friends at the family’s cabin on Lake Madison, SD.

Gerry is survived by his wife, Donna of Sioux Falls; children, John (Jill) of Golden Valley, MN, Kelly (Scott) Thien of Indianapolis, IN, Mike of Burnsville, MN, and Jeremy (Kelsey) of Bozeman, MT; siblings, Jen (Jack) Donovan, Bob (Cecelia), Ken (Glenda), Jean (Ray) Pederson, Mary Sue, Diane (Bob) Reiff, and George (Gwen); eleven grandchildren, Jacob, Josephine, Jessica and Thomas Bunkers, Andrew, Joshua and Katie Thien, Cameron and Caleigh Bunkers, Logan and Taylor Bunkers; and many nieces, nephews and other relatives.  He is preceded in death by his parents; brother Earl; sister-in-law Ellen; and grandson Daniel Thien.

Burial will be private. The Bunkers and Thien families would like to thank all the family, friends and caregivers who helped Gerry through his recent illnesses. Eric M. Petty

petty picEric M. Petty, 35, of Dell Rapids, formerly of Omaha, NE passed away on Tuesday, October 24, 2017 from injuries received in an automobile accident. His Memorial Service will begin at 2:00 p.m. on Friday, October 27, 2017 at Kahler Funeral Home.

Eric is survived by his mother and step-father, Donna and Conrad Bartolome of Omaha, NE; his sister, Sarah (Justin) Hinrichs; his father, Robert David Petty of Council Bluffs, IA and his extended family of uncles, aunts and cousins.

John Devlin

John DevlinJohn Benjamin Devlin, 89, passed away on Thursday, October 5, 2017 at Good Samaritan Center in Sioux Falls, SD. John Benjamin Devlin, son of John Francis Devlin and Mary (Tobin) Devlin, was born April 29, 1928 in Sioux Falls, SD. John was a lifelong resident of Sioux Falls. He attended Cathedral High School. Grateful for having shared his life are his five children, Tim (Lynn), John (Mary), Dan (Jill), all of Sioux Falls, Mary Zakrzewski of O’Neill, NE, and Vince (Julie) of Dell Rapids; 12 grandchildren, Bridget, John, Beau, Ben, Dustin, Stacy, Sara, Jean, Paula, Jeff, Michelle, and Rachel; 16 great grandchildren, Bryn, Erin, Caelan, Cullen, Michael, Andrew, Ethan, Jymira, Quinton, Paxton, James, Claire, Oliver, Jack, Luke and Conor, along with several nieces and nephews.

Milo Holt

Milo HoltMilo Henry Holt, 92, a long-time Jacksonville, FL resident, passed away peacefully Saturday, Oct. 7 following several months of declining health. He will be buried in the family plot in rural South Dakota. On-line condolences may be left at the Hardage-Giddens Oaklawn Chapel website.

Milo was born in rural Dell Rapids, SD, in 1924 to Henry G. Holt and Gertie M. (Monger) Holt, the youngest of four children. He graduated from Dell Rapids High School and farmed in the area until he retired in 1980. He then relocated to Jacksonville because of family in the area and became a financial advisor for the American Classic Securities until 2008 when he once again retired.

Milo had been an active member of Toastmasters International, Sons of Norway Gateway to Florida Lodge 3-541 and Shepherd of the Woods Lutheran Church. He served meals on wheels and was a Sunday school teacher. He was very proud of his Lutheran faith and his Norwegian ancestry since his Mother was born in Norway.

He was preceded in death by his parents and three older sisters. Surviving family include varied nieces, nephews, great nieces and nephews.

Mary (Hermanson) Odlund

Mary OdlundMary Margaret (Hermanson) Odland was born on April 13, 1926 to John and Alice (Paulson) Hermanson in Dell Rapids, South Dakota. She was baptized on June 27, 1926 and confirmed her faith on June 18, 1939 at the Dell Rapids Lutheran Church. She spent her childhood years in Dell Rapids and graduated from Dell Rapids High School with the class of 1943. She then attended the University of South Dakota in Vermillion where she graduated in May of 1947 with a B.A. Degree in Sociology.

On August 1, 1948, Mary was united in marriage with her childhood sweetheart, Donald Mark Odland, at the Dell Rapids Lutheran Church, with Don’s father officiating at the ceremony. The couple then moved to Milwaukee, Wisconsin, where Don attended medical school for four years at Marquette University. They then moved to Minneapolis for Don to complete a two year residency. In 1954, the couple moved to Luverne, Minnesota, where they settled into small town life. Don worked hard building his medical practice and Mary worked hard caring for the needs of their family. She was a stay-at-home mother for their five children and loved it!

On Thursday, September 14, 2017 while surrounded by her family at the Douglas County Hospital in Alexandria, Mary went to be with her Lord at the age of 91 years, five months and one day. On-line condolences may be left at the Hartquist Funeral Home website.

Mary is lovingly remembered by her children, Mark (Pat) Odland of Alexandria, MN, David (Sharon) Odland of Alexandria, MN, Debra Odland of Woodbury, MN, Paul Odland of Alexandria, MN, and Steve Odland of Luverne; 10 grandchildren, Mark, Matthew, Tony, Kristoffer, Laura, Eric, Ryan, Will, Wade and Wyatt; 13 great-grandchildren (with a 14th and 15th expected), Brooke, Oliver, Charlotte, Maggie, Belle, Evie, Henry, Barron, Mason, Ella, Blake, Alba Joy, Alexis, and other family members. She was preceded in death by her husband, Donald; her parents; and her brother, Dr. John Hermanson.

C. Joan Hilts

JoanHiltsC. Joan Hilts, 76, of Omaha, NE, passed away peacefully on Sunday, September 17, 2017 at the Dougherty Hospice House in Sioux Falls, SD after a two year battle with pancreatic cancer. Her funeral service will begin at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, September 22, 2017 at Christ Community Church, 404 S. 108th, Omaha, NE 68154. Carol Joan Lewis was born on February 25, 1941, in Sioux City, Iowa, the daughter of Charles A. and Meredith M.(Anderson) Lewis.  She was the first of four children with siblings, Kay and Kenneth (twins) and brother, Robert (Bob) Lewis. She was raised in Sioux City, married to Terry Hilts and raised her family there. In 1983, she moved to Omaha, NE, and worked for thirty-two years at Nebraska Methodist Hospital and Health System, and at Nebraska Methodist College. She retired in February of 2014, but went back to the college to work on occasion and as needed, until the summer of 2015.

Joan has been a devoted member of Christ Community Church since September of 2001, and made a conscious decision to profess her faith in her Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, and asked for forgiveness of sin by being re-baptized on September 28, 2003. She has loved praising our Lord as a member of the Christ Community Church choir. She was a former member of the Omaha Chapter of Sweet Adelines, currently, Acappella Omaha,and she has also participated in the Omaha Music Circle. Traveling has also been a joy. She especially loved Siesta Key Beach, FL, and the Gulf Coast of Florida, where she vacationed many times with family and friends. She has enjoyed scrapbooking photos and other memories for family and friends, and researching her family genealogy. On one very special trip,  she joined her cousin, Tom Bloxham and his wife, Betsy, along with her brother, Ken, his wife, Pam Lewis, as they traveled to Denmark to see where their great-grandfather and great-grandmother Anderson were born and lived before they came to the United States in the 1800s. It was truly a trip of a lifetime.

She was preceded in death by her parents and her brother, Bob.

Joan is survived by her loving family, her son, Mark (Teresa) Hilts of Sioux City, IA; her daughters, Diane (Richard) Nyalka of Rotonda West, FL; and Susan (Mike) Kahler of Dell Rapids, SD; her grandchildren, Matt (Britni) Hilts; Eric (Jen) Hilts; Allison (Vince)  Mathis; Jared (Ashley) Brown; Amanda Kahler; Nic Kahler; step-grandchildren, Dan (Nichole) Nyalka; and Renee (Brian) McVey; great-grandchildren, Philip Hilts; Madison Hilts; Ethan Hilts; Aiden Mathis; Simon Hilts; Samuel Hilts; Morgan Nyalka; Jocelyn McVey; Grady Nyalka; Aria Mathis; Jayce Brown; and Colin McVey; her sister, Kay Tabscott of St. Louis, MO; her brother, Ken (Pam) Lewis of Cedar Rapids, IA; and her many special cousins, nieces and nephews and extended special friends and Sisters and Brothers in Christ.

Douglas John Sittig

Sittig, Doug new obit photoDouglas John Sittig passed away on September 11, 2017, after a 10 year battle with colon cancer.

Memorial services will begin at 11:00 AM Saturday, September 16, 2017 at St. George Catholic Church in Hartford. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

Visitation with the family present will be from 5:00 to 7:00 PM Friday, September 15, 2017 at Minnehaha Funeral Home in Dell Rapids.

Doug was born November 12, 1954, to Wesley and Evelyn (Odde) Sittig in Dell Rapids, SD. Doug began his education in a country school and at the age of seven attended school in Dell Rapids where he was an all-around athlete participating in football, basketball and track. He graduated from Dell Rapids High School in 1973. After graduation he enlisted in the US Army, serving his time in Germany. Doug was employed for over 31 years at Sanford Hospital as a power plant operator.

Doug enjoyed riding Harley Davidson motorcycles. He built and customized several motorcycles. In 1995 Doug met Deb (Spielmann) Bossman and for over 22 years they built a life together. They enjoyed many trips to the Sturgis Rally meeting up with their Sturgis Family. Doug and Deb were married on January 20, 2017. Doug also enjoyed hunting and fishing. He always liked to go where there weren’t any game wardens! Trips to hunt deer, duck and pheasant were always good times with good friends. During the last years, Doug really enjoyed his fishing trips with his brother, Steve and several friends. Doug was rumored to be the best bobber fisherman ever—a rumor he probably started!

Doug is survived by his wife, Deb; brother, Steve, Sioux Falls, mother-in-law, Lorna Spielmann, Hartford; brother and sister-in-laws, Gregg and Marsha Schneider, Sioux Falls, Darrell and Carolyn Spielmann, Hartford; aunt, Helen Stansell, Dell Rapids and several nieces, nephews, cousins, friends; lifelong friend, Kevin Park, Dell Rapids and his Sturgis Family.

Doug was preceded in death by his infant sister, Nyla; parents, Wesley and Evelyn; grandparents, John and Minnie Odde, Ed and Naomi Sittig; father-in-law, Delbert Spielmann; several aunts, uncles and cousin.

During Doug’s battle with cancer, he and Deb were supported by their family, friends, neighbors, power plant crew and co-workers. Deb and Doug would like you to know how much it was appreciated and to thank you for the prayers, care and sacrifices.

Vernon H. Bokker

bokker picVernon H. Bokker, 95, of Sioux Falls, formerly of Dell Rapids, passed away on Tuesday, September 5, 2017 at Dow Rummel Village in Sioux Falls. His funeral service will begin at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, September 9, 2017 in the Lutheran Church of Dell Rapids. Visitation will begin at noon with the family present from 5:00 p.m. – 7:00 p.m. on Friday, September 8, 2017 at Kahler Funeral Home.

Vernon Bokker was born to Will Bokker and Tillie (Haak) Bokker in Dell Rapids, South Dakota on March 27, 1922.  Vernon was a lifelong farmer, working and participating in farm work nearly his entire life.  Even his hobbies connected to his farm life, as he loved to collect toy tractors.  He was married to Elaine Carlson Bokker on December 1, 1945, and together they were blessed with three children, Ray, Roberta, and Sharon.

Vernon had three great loves in his life: his wife of 71 years, Elaine; his family; and farming.  Vernon was happy to talk to anyone about these topics, and he was in fact known for his gift of telling stories and making friends everywhere he went.  His kind spirit and helpful nature shown through to everyone he met, and he is remembered fondly for his good will. Vernon also loved to have fun, and he and Elaine were often the life of the party.  They loved to host reunions and parties for friends, and they loved to dance as well.  In his later years Vernon often joked that he and Elaine were “wild ones.”  His humor and light spirit will be dearly missed.

Vernon is survived and lovingly remembered by his wife, Elaine Bokker; his son, Ray (Marlys) Bokker of Gregory, SD; his daughters, Roberta Geraets of Dell Rapids, SD and Sharon Chontos of Sioux Falls, SD; sister, Delores Shiveley of Crane, MO; grandchildren, Paula, Troy, John, Sara, Cheyenne, Mark, and Jack; and five great grandchildren.  Vernon is preceded in death by his parents and his brothers, Calvin and Merle.

The family would like to extend their deepest thanks to the caring staff at Dow Rummel Village.

Mass of Christian Burial will begin at 10:30 AM Tuesday, September 12, 2017 at St. Mary Catholic Church in Dell Rapids. Burial will be in St. Mary Catholic Cemetery in Dell Rapids. Visitation will be from 5:00 to 7:00 PM with a Wake service at 7:00 PM Monday, September 11, 2017 at Minnehaha Funeral Home in Dell Rapids. Jeanette was born July 28, 1931 to Lawrence and Theresa (Bowar) Fiegen of Renner, SD. She was to be joined by brothers, Richard and Robert; sisters, Cecelia and Catherine with Charles as the youngest. Jeanette married Melvin “Bud” Penning on January 17, 1951 at St. Mary Catholic Church in Dell Rapids. To this union was born Stephanie, Steven and Suzanne. She and Bud farmed most of their working years. Jeanette was an avid flower gardener and a faithful member of St. Mary Catholic Church. She enjoyed driving a school bus and developed a special bond with the children.

Jeanette is survived by her husband of 66 years, Bud; daughter, Stephanie (Micheal) Langner; son, Steven Penning; daughter, Suzanne (Dave) Yeigh; 13 grandchildren, Michelle (Tracy) Langner Richmond, Aaron (Holly) Langner, Adam (Sarah) Langner, Tennille (Tim) Knoop, Bethanie Langner, Kris (Ellie Hail-Langner) Langner, Jeff (Charity) Penning, Brian (Jenn Young) Penning, Amanda Penning, Barbara (Charlie Hynick) Penning, Kelly (Aspen Davis) Reed, Cory (Ali) Yeigh and Brandi (Ryan) Monson; 30 great-grandchildren; brothers, Robert Fiegen and Charles Fiegen; sisters, Cecelia Bunkers and Sister Catherine Fiegen as well as many other relatives and friends.

Jeanette was preceded in death by her parents; brother, Richard Fiegen; daughter-in-law, Joan Penning and grandson-in-law, Garrett Polley. In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials are directed to the American Heart Association.

Stewart “Pete” Pederson

Stewart Carl Pederson was born October 29, 1942 in Dell Rapids, SD the son of Talmer & Gladys (Stewart) Pederson. As a young boy, he moved to Madison, SD and graduated from Madison Central High School in 1960. On February 10, 1968 he married Susan O’Hara in Sioux Falls.For many years, he was an appliance repairman and installed floorcovering. With his years of experience, Pete decided to venture out on his own and bought a floorcovering business in Madison. For over 20 years, he owned and operated his business which everyone knows as Eddie’s Carpetland.

Pete is survived by his wife of 49 years, Sue of Ramona; daughter, Angie (Kevin) Wolter of St. Paul, MN; son, Andy of Dell Rapids, SD; four grandchildren, Cody & Samantha Smith both of St. Paul, Jacob Pederson of Sioux Falls and Onna Pederson of Howard, SD; sister, Joy Budde of Yankton, SD. He was preceded in death by his parents & father-in-law, S. John O’Hara.
