Joe Luke

Joe Luke, 73, of Dell Rapids passed away Thursday, November 28, 2019 at home surrounded by his loving family.

Mass of Christian Burial will begin at 10:30 AM Wednesday, December 4, 2019 at St. Mary Catholic Church in Dell Rapids. Burial will be in the church cemetery.  Visitation with the family present will be from 5:00 to 7:00 PM followed by a Wake Service at 7:00 PM Tuesday, December 3, 2019 at the church.

Joe was born in Mitchell, SD to August and Mary (Neis) Luke on August 19, 1946. He went to school in Marion. He married Karen Berthelsen on July 15, 1966 in Parker, SD. They moved to a farm east of Dell Rapids in 1971, where he farmed for Wayne Burkhart for 27 years. They moved into town in 1981. In October of 1998 he started farming for Kevin and Renee Brown until he retired in November of 2013. Although, he was retired he still enjoyed helping the Browns out part-time with the harvest season, until the fall of 2017. He also helped at the Dell Rapids Elevator in the spring. His real passion was for small engine repair and helping others. He really enjoyed the conversations he had with all the people in and out of the shop, swapping stories, and the countless friendships he made. He started fixing things in his garage and continued in the Luke Shop, where he kept very busy. There was never a day his phone didn’t ring or a lawn mower or snow blower wasn’t being dropped off. Joe was a selfless, caring and loving person who truly touched the lives of his family and those around him.

Joe is preceded in death by his sons, Marvin and Scott Luke; parents, August and Mary Luke; brothers, Don and Bill Luke; sisters, Marlene Weber and Margaret Schrader.

Joe is survived by his loving wife, Karen: son, Jeff (Brenda) Luke and daughter, Laurie (Ken) Schultz, both of Dell Rapids; daughter-in-law, Sherri (Clint) Dobesh of Centerton, AR; five brothers, John Luke of Marion, Jerome Luke of Mott, ND, Ray Luke of Sioux Falls, Mike Luke of Hartford, Paul Luke of Marion; five sisters, Mary Kelch of Clarion, IA, Donna Mae Miller of Mott, ND, Bernice Kreis of Ashland, Neb, Christine Sarnowski of Blair, Neb, Verionica Narsavage of Moscow, PA; eight grandchildren, Ashley (James) Kroon of Sioux Falls, Kelsey (Dylan) Nelsen of Dell Rapids, Breona (Sam) Hinricher of Fargo, ND, Michael Luke of Sioux Falls, Mallery Luke of Phoenix, AZ, Karley Luke of Centerton, AR, Chad Sneve of Hudson, Dayton Sneve of Dell Rapids; “granddog”, Tank of Dell Rapids and seven great-grandchildren.

A special thank you to Kevin and Renee Brown and their boys for everything they have done for Joe and his family. It has meant the world to us all.

Patricia Nelson

Patricia M. Nelson, 97, of Dell Rapids, passed away on Wednesday, November 20, 2019 at the Dells Nursing and Rehab Center in Dell Rapids. Her funeral service will begin at 10:00 a.m. on Monday, November 25, 2019 in the Lutheran Church of Dell Rapids Chapel. Interment will be in the Dell Rapids Cemetery. Patricia Marie Middlen was born on August 29, 1922 at Mitchell, SD, the daughter of William and Anna (David) Middlen. She grew up in Mitchell until moving with her family at the age of 13 to Dell Rapids. She married Uline Nelson on August 29, 1946 in Dell Rapids. The couple made their home in Dell Rapids. Pat worked for Mart’s Market. Uline passed away in 1978. Pat remained in Dell Rapids and worked at T and C’s other place until her retirement.

Pat was a member of the Lutheran Church of Dell Rapids, WELCA  and the Legion Auxiliary. She enjoyed reading and playing cards.

She is preceded in death by her three brothers, Everett, James and John and her sister, Frances.

Those left to cherish her memory are her daughter, Susan (Carl) Spaethe of Republic, MO; her grandchildren, Gregory (Cyndi) and Elizabeth both of Republic, MO and her three great-grandsons, Caleb, Lucas and Kadyn and her extended family and friends.

Memorials may be directed to the Lutheran Church of Dell Rapids Chapel Fund.

James Liester, Jr

James Leo Liester Jr. was born in Garretson SD to James and Gertrude (DeClerk) Liester on November 20, 1932. He attended country school and graduated from Garretson High School in 1950. After high school, he was drafted into the army and served from 1950-1953 as a military policeman. On January 7, 1953 he married Helen (Fiegen) at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Dell Rapids SD. He was a farmer for over 60 years on the family farm. He served on the Garretson Elevator Board for many years and was a member of the Garretson Legion Post #23 for 65 years. James enjoyed dancing the polka, playing cards, watching baseball and football, especially the Twins and Vikings and spending time with family and his lifelong friends and neighbors. He always had cookies ready for family and visitors.

James passed away on Saturday, November 16, 2019 at Avera McKennan Hospital at the age of 86.

Survivors include his children: Wayne (Cheryl) Liester, Garretson SD; Elaine (Dave) Chapman, Dell Rapids SD; Paul (Julie) Liester, Baltic SD; Cynthia Dierks, Fulda MN. 9 Grandchildren: Amy (Tom) Endres, Jodi (Jeff) Stebbins, Beth (Shane) Carlson, James (Sydney) Chapman, Rayanne, Katy & Tess Liester, Cole & Justin Dierks, 10 Great Grandchildren: Olivia, Abby, Ben and Will Endres, Kylie & Quinn Stebbins, Lola & Poppy Carlson, Machenzy & Tytan Chapman. Brothers: Mark Liester, Bill Liester Sisters: Mary Ellen Sorenson, Jean Wick.

He is preceded in death by his loving wife, his parents and son-in-law Brian Dierks.

Mass of Christian Burial will begin at 10:30 AM Thursday, November 21, 2019 at St. Mary Catholic Church, Dell Rapids. Burial will be in the St. Mary Catholic Cemetery. Visitation was from 4:00-7:00 PM Wednesday, with a Wake Service at 5:00 PM at the Minnehaha Funeral Home, Dell Rapids.

Evelyn Pederson

Evelyn C. (Olson) Pederson, 95, of Dell Rapids passed away peacefully on November 5, 2019 at the Dougherty Hospice House. Her funeral service will be held on Tuesday, November 12, 2019 at 10:30 AM in the United Methodist Church, Dell Rapids. Interment will be in the Dell Rapids Cemetery. Visitation will be Monday and the family will be present to greet friends from 5:00 to 7:00 PM at the Minnehaha Funeral Home, Dell Rapids.

Evelyn Olson was born on September 20, 1924 on her parent’s farm in Moody County. She was proud to have attended Hunt Country School, graduated from Dell Rapids Public High School in 1942, and then attended Nettleton Commercial College in Sioux Falls. Evelyn worked in Sioux Falls through 1948. She also worked at the Dell Rapids Lumber Yard and the Dells Dress Shop. In 1966 Evelyn (Evie to the students) went to work for the Dell Rapids School District and retired in 1991. She was known for her memory of the families and history of Dell Rapids and Moody County.

Evelyn married Harvey L. Pederson on August 25, 1946 when he returned from his service in the US Navy in World War II. They lived in an apartment above 422 4th (Main) Street until they moved into their home at 209 East 8th Street in 1949. They lived there until 2012, when they moved to Orchard Hills.

Evelyn and Harvey were members of the Dell Rapids United Methodist Church, The Dakota Territories Model A Club, Tri-Cities Square Dance Club, Tri-State Camper Club, and the Couples Dance Club in Sioux Falls. She also enjoyed her Bridge Club and her Bible Study Group and the Dell Rapids American Legion Auxiliary. She and Harvey really enjoyed travel in their Motorhome. In addition to travel throughout the Midwest, they also drove to Alaska four times.

Evelyn is preceded in death by her parents, Herman and Mary (Christensen) Olson; sisters, Edith Olson and Margaret (Olson) Joneson and her husband, Harvey L. Pederson.

Evelyn is survived by her sons, Gary (Kay) Pederson of Fort Worth, TX and Grant (Julie) Pederson of Wentworth, SD; grandchildren, Nathan (Katy) Pederson of Peters Creek, AK, Stacey (Scott) Kolstad of Anchorage, AK, Libby (Jason DeJardin) of Anchorage, AK, Courtney (Chad) Lyle of Whitefish, MT, Collin (Alison) Pederson of Fort Worth, TX and Austin (Sarah) Pederson of Beaverton, OR; eight great-grandchildren and nieces and nephews.

Arnold Heinemann

Arnold “Arnie” A. Heinemann, 91, of Dell Rapids, passed away on Sunday, October 13, 2019 at the Dells Nursing and Rehab Center. His Mass of Christian Burial will begin at 10:30 a.m. on Thursday, October 17, 2019 in St. Mary Catholic Church, Dell Rapids with Fr. John Lantsberger as the celebrant. Interment will be in the St. Mary Cemetery, Dell Rapids. Casketbearers are Arnie’s grandchildren. Visitation will begin at 1:00 p.m. on Wednesday, October 16, 2019 at Kahler Funeral Home with the family present at 5:00 p.m. The Christian Wake Service will begin at 7:00 p.m. with a family rosary to follow.

Arnie was born on September 15, 1928 on the family farm near Dell Rapids, the son of Raymond and Clara (Eulberg) Heinemann. He grew up on the family farm and graduated from from St. Mary Catholic School. He enlisted in the U.S. Army, after his discharge he returned home to Dell Rapids. He married Nita Oien on November 5, 1953 at St. Mary Catholic Church in Dell Rapids. The couple made their home in Dell Rapids and later moved to a farm west of Dell Rapids. When Arnie started farming with his father, the couple moved to the Heinemann farm. They remained there until moving into Dell Rapids shortly after retiring. Nita passed away on December 11, 2016.

Arnie was a member of St. Mary Catholic Church, the Catholic Order of Foresters and the Dell Rapids American Legion Post. He enjoyed camping, fishing, woodworking and playing cards.

He is preceded in death by his parents and his wife. He is survived by his five children, Deb (Tony) Sorg of Trent, Connie (Jerry) Weniger of Sioux Falls, Steve (Karen) Heinemann of Baltic, Larry (Kay) Heinemann of Custer and Peg (Bob) Ellwein of Dell Rapids; his nine grandchildren, 19 great-grandchildren; his sisters, Delores Fiegen of Dell Rapids and Lois (Harry) Gasper of Dell Rapids.

James Huntimer

James (Jim) Martin Huntimer, 91, of Dell Rapids, passed away from lung cancer on October 10, 2019 at home surrounded by his children.

Mass of Christian Burial will begin at 10:30 AM Monday, October 14, 2019 at St. Mary Catholic Church in Dell Rapids. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

Visitation will be from 2:00 to 4:00 PM followed by a Wake Service at 4:00 PM Sunday, October 13, 2019 at Minnehaha Funeral Home in Dell Rapids.

Jim was born October 22, 1927 in Chester, SD to Joseph and Regina (Elskamp) Huntimer. He was a member of St. Mary Catholic Church, Foresters, St. Mary Mother Cabrini Alter Society group, Dell Rapids City Council, and the South Dakota Pilots Association.

After family, Jim’s love was flying having logged over 8000 hours. He was Plant Super Intendant at LG Everest, Service Manager at Doyle Lunstra, Equipment Operator at Myrle & Roys Paving Inc. and flew delivering mail to Minneapolis. Additionally, he owned the Dairy Queen in Dell Rapids from 1969-1982. He volunteered for Shriners which included flying burn victims to Mayo Clinic.

Grateful for having shared his life are his eleven children, Linda Huntimer, Albany, OR, Peggy (Ron) Smith, Lincoln, NE, Mary Kay (Robert) Fuglsby, Garretson, Lois (Dave) Lenth, Dell Rapids, Paul (Julie) Huntimer, Omaha, NE, Joan (Richard) Murphy, Dell Rapids, Marie (Scott) Chamley, Arlington, WA, Michael (Becky) Huntimer, Wichita, KS, James (Karen) Huntimer, Honolulu, HI, David (Ginni) Huntimer, Big Springs, NE and Pete Huntimer, Canton, SD; thirty grandchildren, forty two great-grandchildren; brothers, William Huntimer, Dell Rapids and Joe Huntimer, Beulah, ND; sister, Kay Sorken, Las Vegas, NV and companion Pat Hansen, Dell Rapids.

Sharline Avera

Sharline “Fouquet” Avera was born in Prague, Oklahoma on September 6th, 1942 to Leon and Stella Fouquet. Sharline left to be with her Heavenly Father on October 5th, 2019.

Sharline was the best southern cook her family ever knew. Everything she cooked was made with love for her family and friends. Sharline was a strong woman who loved her independence and the Lord. She was loved and best known as “Aunt Shockey” and “Tex,” but most of all as “Granny.”

In 2004, Sharline accepted Jesus Christ as her savior, and was baptized at her Baptist church in Joplin, Missouri.  Sharline never missed an opportunity to hug and kiss on her four grandchildren and five great grandchildren. She was full of life, feisty, and enjoyed a littletwo-step every now and then.

Sharline was preceded in death by her ex-husband Bobby L. Lowe, Sr. Together, Bobby and Sharline had three children, Lynn V. Daniel, Bobby L. Lowe, Jr. and Thelma F. Busk. She was also preceded in death by two brothers and three sisters.

Sharline is survived by her daughter Lynn Daniel and her husband Joe, son Bobby L. Lowe, Jr. and his wife Bertina, and daughter Thelma Busk and her husband Byron. She is also survived by four grandchildren, Yancy Lowe, Christopher Arends, Kala Aragon, and Felix Busk. She has five great-grandchildren, Jadah Aragon, Briggs Aragon, Zephaniah Lowe, Bentlee Aragon, and Tinley Aragon.

The family will receive friends on Saturday, October 12th,  2019 at 11:00 a.m. at James Valley Community Center in Mitchell, SD for a celebration of life.   James Valley Community Center is located at 300 W. 1st Ave., Mitchell, SD. Funeral arrangements were under the care of Kahler Funeral Home.

Marjorie Lampe

Marjorie A. Lampe, 91, of Dell Rapids and formerly of Salem passed away on Friday, October 4, 2019 at Dells Nursing and Rehab Center. Funeral mass will begin at 10:30 am on Friday, October 11, 2019 at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Salem. Visitation will begin at 12 pm on Thursday with a 3 pm rosary and 7 pm prayer service with family present at 6 pm all at Kinzley Funeral Home in Salem.

Marjorie Kyte was born November 7, 1927 in Wakonda, SD to Ray and Nora (Holton) Kyte. She grew up in SE South Dakota in the communities of Burbank, Tripp and Parkston. She graduated from Parkston High School in 1945 and then attended Notre Dame Jr. College in Mitchell. After graduating she worked at St. Joseph Hospital in Mitchell.

Marjorie married Alvin Lampe on May 25, 1948 and they farmed near Salem where they started their family. They were members of St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Salem. She worked as a waitress and CNA and later developed an interest in reflexology. She studied and earned her certificate in reflexology and practiced it many years. They moved into town in 1991 and she joined the Red Hats and worked at the senior lunch program.

Marjorie is survived by: her children, David (LeAnn) Lampe of Madison, Richard Lampe of Carter Lake, IA, John (Katherine) Lampe of Omaha, NE, Kathy Bongers of Dell Rapids, Bernard (Sue) Lampe of Dell Rapids, and Mark (Joann) Lampe of Midwest City, OK; 9 grandchildren, Christina Jackson, Jason Bongers, Debby Bongers, Joshua Lampe, Lindsay Lampe, Laura Rivard, Andrew Lampe, Jared Lampe and Paige Lampe; great-great-grandchildren, Kenneth Bongers, Benjamin Rivard and Baby Rivard expected soon. She was preceded in death by her husband, her parents, her siblings, Roger (Carol) Kyte, Helen (Carl) Lampe, and LaValle (George) Roth, a daughter Diana Lampe and great-granddaughter, Maxine Bongers.

Dona Rae Dressen

Dona Rae Dressen, 79, of Dell Rapids was called to God on Wednesday, September 11, 2019.

Memorial visitation will be from 2:00 to 4:00 PM Sunday, September 15, 2019 at Minnehaha Funeral Home in Dell Rapids.

Dona was the youngest of four children, born on January 5, 1940 to Dale and Francis Stone. Dona attended school in Dell Rapids and worked in a cafe with her dad during school years.

She married Dale Dressen on July 20, 1957. To this union was born four children, Dan, Ken, Tim and Julie. Dona worked hard raising kids (the best kids in the world) while working beside her husband when they purchased a gas station, laundry mat and hardware store. Dona wishes to say goodbye to family and friends.

Grateful for having shared her life are her husband of 62 years, Dale Dressen; her children, Daniel (Wendy) of Sioux Falls, Kenneth (Mary) of Baraboo, WI, Timothy (Darla) of Brandon, SD and Julie (Paul) Huntimer of Omaha, NE;  13 grandchildren and 28 great-grandchildren; brother, Jim (Dorothy) Stone of Sioux Falls, SD and sisters, Janice Hemme of La Mars, IA and Lavonne (Glenn) Pease of Blaine, MN and many nieces and nephews, relatives and friends. She was preceded in death by her parents, Charles Dale and Frances Stone.

Harry Persinger

Harry Persinger, 80, of Dell Rapids, SD passed away Sunday, September 8, 2019 at Riverview Healthcare Center in Flandreau, SD.

Memorial visitation and Celebration of Life will be from 5:00 to 7:00 PM Friday, September 13, 2019 at Minnehaha Funeral Home Chapel in Dell Rapids. Inurnment will be at a later date in Ft. Snelling National Cemetery.

Harry Persinger was born on August 16, 1939 to parents Howard and Madge (Fisher) Persinger in Washington DC. He graduated from Elizabeth City High School, N.C. Soon after graduation Harry joined the US Army where he retired honorably in 1989 after a nearly 30 year commitment to the military.

Harry continued to serve his fellow man by working as a counselor for those who had contracted HIV and AIDS. Harry was always there to lend a helping hand to those in need including working with children through the Easter Seal Foundation, serving in various churches in many different positions, opening his home to and working with veterans with PTSD, and was part of the color guard for many Wacipi’s across the US and in Australia. Harry was loved by many!

His survivors include his wife, Stephanie (Lynch) Persinger; daughters, Tonia (Persinger) Marsh, Pamela (Persinger) Hartzog, and Angela (Persinger) Bozicevich; grandchildren, Tyler Marsh, Travis Marsh, Tabreena Eubanks, Kristina Worley, Andrew Bozicevich, Logan Bozicevich, Noah Bozicevich and Keagan Bozicevich. Harry will be missed by all nine of his great-grandchildren and various nieces and nephews, as well as, travelers he met and loved along the way.

Harry was known to have a gift to make others feel loved and he used his gift every day he was on this earth.
