Tom Herding

Tom HerdingThomas “Tom” P. Herding, 64, of Dell Rapids passed away on Wednesday, March 18, 2015 at his home. His funeral service will begin at 11:00 a.m. on Monday, March 23, 2015 at St. Mary Catholic Church in Dell Rapids. Visitation with the family present will be on Sunday, March 22, 2015 from 2:00 p.m. – 5:00 p.m. at Kahler Funeral Home. Condolences may be left at www.kahlerfh.com

Tom Herding was born on January 8, 1951, in Breckenridge, MN, to Catherine and Ben Herding. Tom grew up and attended school in Wahpeton, ND. He graduated in 1969 from Wahpeton High School. Tom attended college at North Dakota State School of Science in Wahpeton, ND. Tom married Kathy Bruer in Wahpeton, ND on April 19, 1971. Tom and Kathy moved to Madison, SD in 1974 and owned the Madison Bakery, You and I Cafe, and Kathy’s Cake and Coffee Shop. Tom and Kathy had five children, Chad of Madison, Craig (Chris) of Brookings, Corey (Tammy) of Brandon, Christina (Aaron Litz) of Madison and Carrie (Mike Barnett) of Sioux Falls. Tom and Kathy divorced in April of 1987.

Tom moved to Sioux Falls and owned two Brenda’s Pastries in Sioux Falls, Clem’s Bar in Sioux Falls, Smokey’s Bar in Dell Rapids and later moved to Dell Rapids and owned the Old Dutch Inn.

In 2011 Tom married Jamie Nelson in Dell Rapids, SD. They lived in Dell Rapids and together owned the Old Dutch Inn. From this marriage Tom gained three step-sons, Christopher Nelson of Dell Rapids, Brendon Nelson of Dell Rapids and Dereck (Alaina) Nelson of Colman.

Tom is survived by his wife, his children, his 15 grandchildren, Brandy, Alex, Ben , Cassidy, Kaylee, Kenna, Koryn, Corey Jr., Carter, Carson, Alyssa, Dylan, Lyndsey, Makira, Tucker and Maggie; and his siblings, Donnie, Mary Jane, Lois and Roger.

He is preceded in death by his parents, his sisters, Shirley and Marjorie and his brother, Paul.

Tom had a passion for helping and feeding people. Tom always made sure everyone he met had a full stomach. Tom was loved by many. Tom loved summer and his time spent on Lake Brandt with his family.
