Funeral services will begin at 1 p.m. Mon., March 9, for Helmuth Papendick, 92, Aberdeen, former Madison resident, who died on March 5, 2015, at Avera Mother Joseph Manor in Aberdeen. The Rev. Warren Uecker will officiate in Our Savior Lutheran Church at Madison, and burial with military honors will be in Graceland Cemetery at Madison.

Papendick was born on April 25, 1922, at Freeman to Rudolph and Mary (Kasper) Papendick. He grew up in Freeman and Canistota, where he graduated from high school. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II. He returned to Bridgewater and farmed. He married Leona St. Clair on Nov. 6, 1949, at Hammond, Ind. They moved to Madison in 1978. His wife died in 1999.
He was a 68-year member of the American Legion.
Survivors include two sons, Ron of Minneapolis, and John (Janene) of Aberdeen; five grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; three brothers, Bob of Pullman, Wash., Norm of Spencer, S.D, and Arnie (Linda) of Canistota; and a sister, Ella Koepp of Dell Rapids.
He was also preceded in death by his parents; a son, Stan in 1997; two brothers; a sister; and a brother in infancy.
