Dell Rapids Baseball Improves to 5-1

DellsBaseballLogoThe Dell Rapids High School Baseball team improved to 5-1 after picking up a win over Sioux Valley on Friday, April 15th, and a win over Madison on Sunday, April 17th.

Dell Rapids beat Sioux Valley 18-2 after scoring 11 runs in the first inning.  The game was called after three innings  due to the 15-run rule.  Trevor Pulscher earned the win pitching all three innings giving up two runs on two hits while striking out two batters and walking four.  Nate McKee had two singles and three RBI in the game.  Carter Gullickson had a triple and a single with four RBI.  Ryan Geraets picked up two singles and an RBI.  Mason Peter had a triple and three RBI.  Josh Roemen scored three times for Dell Rapids.  Matt Gillogly had a triple and an RBI.

Dell Rapids scored three times in the first inning on their way to a 6-1 win over Madison.  Brett Mogen got the win pitching six innings giving up one run, which was unearned, on four hits while striking out 12 batters.  Roemen, Gullickson, Peter, and Mogen each had a single in the game.  Gillogly, Geraets, and Eric Klein all each had a double.

Dell Rapids will host Sioux Falls Christian on Thursday, April 21st, in their next game.

Dells Baseball Opens Season with Win

DellsBaseballLogoDell Rapids Baseball opened up the 2015 season with a win over West Central 12-9 on Monday, April 4th, at Rickeman Field.  Dell Rapids jumped out to an early 4-0 lead in the first three innings of the game.  West Central took the lead after scoring seven runs in the top of the fifth inning, but the lead was short-lived.  Dell Rapids answered with five runs in their half of the fifth to re-gain the lead at 9-7.  Dell Rapids added three more in the bottom of the sixth inning.  West Central added two more runs in the top of the seventh.

Brett Mogen started the ball game for Dell Rapids pitching four innings giving up no runs on one hit while striking out five.  Matt Gillogly started the fifth inning, but only lasted 2/3 of an inning giving up seven runs on four hits while walking five batters and striking out one.  Josh Roemen pitched 2 1/3 innings of relief to earn the win.  Roemen gave up two runs on one hit while walking three and striking out two batters.  Jonah Rechtenbaugh took the loss for West Central.

Roemen was 1-1 from the plate and scored four runs for Dell Rapids.  Nate McKee was 2-4 with two RBI.  Mogen, Gillogly, Ryan Geraets, Eric Klein, and Mason Peter all had one hit apiece.

Dell Rapids 13/14 Teeners Fall to Lennox

The Dell Rapids 13/14 Teeners lost their opening round game of the State A Tournament in Mobridge 14-4 to Lennox on Friday, July 24th.  Dell Rapids trailed 6-2 in the fourth inning, but could not get any closer in a tough first day.  Dell Rapids will look to bounce back on Saturday at 2:30 p.m.

Garretson Advances in Region 2B with Win over Dell Rapids

DRLegion71515Garretson hung on for a 4-3 win over Dell Rapids in Region 2B Legion Tournament action on Wednesday, July 15th, at Rickeman Field in Dell Rapids.

Both starting pitchers were in shut down mode through the first six innings of the game.  Brett Mogen of Dell Rapids held Garretson to no runs on four hits through six innings, while John Gassman held Dell Rapids to no runs on five hits through six innings.

Garretson was able to break the tie in the bottom of the seventh inning.  Lead-off hitter Dereck Veldkamp starting the inning off with a walk.  Alex Thorson reached on an error.  Then Jacob Fitzgerald, Jesse Brockhouse, and Micah Mader all had RBI singles in a row to give Garretson a 3-0 lead.  Mogen was able to get Tyler Willems to ground out, but Willems drove in the fourth run of the inning.

Dell Rapids mounted a rally of their own in the top of the eighth inning.  Gassman was able to get two of the first three hitters out in the inning.  Carter Gullickson entered the game for Casey Hansen after Hansen hit into a fielder’s choice.  Gullickson advanced to second on a passed ball, and Josh Roemen followed with an RBI double.  Roemen then stole third base during the Mogen at-bat, and scored on a throwing error.  Mogen finished his at-bat with a walk.  Joe Muston followed with a single to move Mogen to third.  Mogen would score the third run of the inning on a wild pitch.  But that was all Dell Rapids could get in the inning, and the game.  Willems only faced three batters in the ninth inning for the save, ending the game with a pick-off of Matt Gillogly.

Gassman picked up the win for Garretson throwing eight innings giving up three runs, two earned, on five hits while striking out four and walking three.  Mogen took the loss pitching eight innings giving up four runs, three earned on seven hits while striking out six and walking three.

In other tournament action, Madison defeated Castlewood/Clear Lake 14-1 in the 3:00 p.m. game.  Madison also defeated Volga 7-6 in the 8:00 p.m. game.

Dell Rapids will play Castlewood/Clear Lake in an elimination game today at 5:00 p.m.  Following the conclusion of that game, Madison will face Garretson in semifinal action.

Dell Rapids Baseball Two Wins Away from State Title

The Dell Rapids baseball team is just two wins from a State B High School Club Baseball Championship.  Dell Rapids won two games in the Super Regional on Monday, June 1st in Milbank.

Dell Rapids opened up Regional play on May 27th with a 10-0 over Flandreau to advance to the Super Regional in Milbank on Monday, June 1st.  Dell Rapids won their first game of the Super Regional over Sioux Valley by a score of 5-1.  Trevor Pulscher pitched a one-hitter while striking out eight.  Josh Roemen had two hits in the game, and Dawson Kerzman drove in two runs.

That win advanced Dell Rapids to play Milbank later in the night.  Dell Rapids was able to avenge a 1-0 loss earlier in the season by beating Milbank 9-0 to advance to the State B Championship round.  Brett Mogen pitched seven innings giving up no runs on five hits while strike out four.  Mogen also collected two hits in the game.  Ryan Gareats added two hits for Dell Rapids, and Kerzman drove in three runs to give him a total of 5 RBI in the two games in Milbank.

Dell Rapids enters the State Championship round with a record of 16-2.  Their other loss was a 2-0 defeat to Madison in the first game of the year.

The four teams in the championship bracket are Dell Rapids, Vermillion, McCook Central and St Thomas More.  Dell Rapids defeated McCook Central 5-4 on April 24th.  They have not played the other two teams this year.

Dell Rapids will face Vermillion at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday, June 6th, at Ronken Field on the campus of Augustana University.  McCook Central vs St Thomas More will follow 20 minutes after the conclusion of the Dell Rapids vs Vermillion game.  The losers of the two games will play for 3rd place 20 minutes after the McCook Central/St Thomas More game.  The Championship game will start 20 minutes after the 3rd place game.

Dell Rapids Baseball Advances to Super Regional June 1

Dell Rapids scored eight runs in the first inning to pull away from Flandreau 10-0 in five innings May 27 at Rickeman Field.

Josh Roemen led off the bottom of the first with a walk and scored on Carter Gullickson’s single. Brett Mogen followed with a double to score Gullickson. Ryan Geraets walked and back to back singles by Nate McKee and Matt Gillogly staked Dell Rapids to a 4-0 lead. McKee, Gillogly, Dawson Kerzman and Roemen all scored before the inning ended.

Dell Rapids added a run in the fourth when McKee doubled and eventually scored. With the bases loaded in the fifth, Trevor Pulscher drew a walk to force in the tenth run to end the game.

Eric Klein also singled to help Dell Rapids (14-2) outhit Flandreau 6-3.

Mogen pitched the first four innings for Dell Rapids. He allowed two hits and struck out seven. Trey Randel shut down Flandreau in the final inning.

The playoffs continue in Milbank on Monday, June 1. Dell Rapids is scheduled to play Sioux Valley at 3:00 PM. The winner of this contest is slated to play the winner of Milbank versus Deuel for the Region 2B championship.

Dell Rapids Baseball Win Steak Reaches Five

The Dell Rapids club baseball team won four more games last week to push their winning streak to five games and improve their record to 10-2.

Dell Rapids strung together nine hits to upend Garretson 5-2 on Tuesday, April 28 at Ronken Field on the campus of Augustana College.

Three triples highlighted the Dell Rapids hitting attack. Gullickson, Mogen and Gillogly each tallied a three-bagger. Roemen, Klein, Mogen, Peter, Geraets and Hansen all added singles.

Gillogly kept Garretson off-balance with five innings of two-hit pitching. He gave up one unearned run.   Pulscher finished off the final two innings for a save. He allowed two hits and one run.

Trevor Pulscher staked Dell Rapids to a 6-1 lead with his strong pitching through four innings Friday, May 1 in Volga. However, Sioux Valley rallied to tie the game with one run in the fifth and four in the sixth.

Geraets led off the seventh for Dell Rapids with a single. He advanced to second on an error then third on a stolen base. Trey Randel singled to right to score Geraets with the eventual winning run. Roemen’s fly ball to right field scored Randel for an insurance run.

Mogen struck out the side in the bottom of the seventh to earn a save.

Gullickson continued his hot streak with three singles. Mogen added two singles and two RBI. McKee, Geraets and Randel each singled.

Dell Rapids broke through for seven runs in the bottom of the sixth to defeat DCH 12-2 at Rickeman Field Sunday, May 3.

Gullickson stroked three singles and drove in the final two runs to end the game. Dawson Kerzman singled twice and drove in three runs. Geraets doubled and singled for two RBI. Josh Roemen, Nate McKee, Gillogly and Hansen all singled.

Brett Mogen pitched a 6-inning complete game to notch the win. He allowed five hits, two runs and struck out five.

Matt Gillogly singled to right field to score Mason Peter and Josh Roemen in the bottom of the seventh inning to lift Dell Rapids past Sioux Valley 5-4 at Rickeman Field Sunday, May 3.

Dell Rapids rallied from a 4-2 deficit in the final inning to win.

Gillogly paced the offense with two hits and also pitched six innings before giving way to Trey Randel in the final inning. Gillogly scattered four hits and struck out 11. Randel set down all three batters he faced in the top of the seventh for the win.

Carter Gullickson doubled and Eric Klein, Brett Mogen, Ryan Geraets and Casey Hansen all added singles.

Dell Rapids Finishes 2nd at VFW 15/16 State A Teener Tournament

The Dell Rapids 15/16 VFW baseball team took second place in the State A Tournament August 8th through August 10th in Volga.  The team was also awarded the Sportsmanship Award.


Championship:  Tyndall 6, Dell Rapids 0

Chase Kortan pitched a complete game 4-hitter and also contributed two doubles and two singles to lead Tyndall to the title.

Ty Hoglund led the Dell Rapids offense with a double and single. Nate McKee and Eric Klein both singled. Tyndall outhit Dell Rapids 9-4.

Hoglund took the pitching loss. He started and completed 3 1/3 innings. Hoglund gave up six hits, five runs and struck out four. Brett Mogen pitched 3 2/3 innings of middle relief. He gave up one run on two hits and struck out three. Trevor Pulscher completed the final inning. He allowed one hit, no runs and struck out one.

Semifinals:  Dell Rapids 5, Vermillion 0

Hoglund and Mogen combined to pitch a shutout against Vermillion in the semi-finals of the state tournament on Friday, August 9th.

Hoglund pitched the first four innings and struck out six while allowing two hits and two walks. Mogen completed the final three innings. He allowed two hits, one walk and struck out two.

Dell Rapids rallied for three runs in the bottom of the second. McKee doubled off the left field wall with one out. Joel Brust reached first when he was hit by a pitch and advanced to second when Dawson Kerzman walked. Eric Klein ripped a single to score McKee and Brust. After Nick Hoffman walked, Seth Andersen pushed Kerzman home with a ground ball out.  Dell Rapids added two insurance runs in the sixth inning. Mogen singled and advanced to second on and error. Both Mogen and McKee scored on Kerzman’s line drive single.

Opening Round:  Dell Rapids 15, Mission 5

Dell Rapids used 12 walks, six hit by pitches and key hits to beat Mission 15-5 in six innings to start the tournament on Thursday, August 8th.

After surrendering two runs in the top of the second inning, Dell Rapids responded with seven runs in the bottom of the second. Five Dell Rapids batters were hit by pitches in the inning – Kerzman, Seth Andersen, Hansen, Mogen and Brust. Singles by Brust, Klein, Hoglund and Kerzman contributed to the rally.

Dell Rapids added four runs in the third inning. Hoffman reached first on a wild pitch, Andersen on an infield error and Hansen by walk. Mogen added an RBI single and McKee an RBI on a sacrifice fly. Two more runs in both the fifth and sixth innings ended the game.

Trevor Pulscher earned the pitching win for Dell Rapids. He completed four innings and allowed five runs on three hits with three strike outs. Trey Randel closed the final two innings. He allowed one run on two hits and struck out four.

Dells-M Teeners Start Season 0-2

The Dells-M Teeners (ages 15/16) lost two close games to start the 2014 season. Dells-M is one of two 15/16 year-old teams in Dell Rapids.

Madison 16 Gold 3, Dell Rapids 1

Madison grouped four of its six hits into two innings around two Dell Rapids errors to pull out a 3-1 win at Volunteer Field June 2.

Dell Rapids collected four hits. Brett Mogen hit two singles and Nick Hoffman and Hunter Hansen both hit singles. Nate McKee drove in Casey Hansen with a sacrifice fly.
