Dells Baseball Players Earn Post Season Awards

Josh RoemenAfter a 2017 championship run, a few of the Dell Rapids baseball players earned post-season awards for their play during the high school baseball season.

Josh Roemen, a senior, was selected as a Class B All-State player for 2017.  Roemen was also honored as an Academic All-State player and earned Region 2B All-Region honors.  Seniors Nate McKee and Trevor Pulscher were also honored as Region 2B All-Region selections.  Juniors Carter Gullickson and Matt Gillogly made the Region 2B All-Region team as well.

Dells Baseball Wins State Title

DRvsVerm_5-29-17_StateChampDell Rapids Baseball claimed the 2017 South Dakota High School Baseball Association State B championship on Monday, May 29th after beating West Central and Vermillion in the four team tournament at Sioux Falls Stadium.

Dell Rapids opened up the tournament with an 11-5 win over West Central.  Dell Rapids put the pressure on early and often in the opening game.  After loading the bases in the bottom of the first inning, Seth Andersen earned an RBI after being hit by a pitch to give Dell Rapids a 1-0 lead after the first inning.  Eddie Price hit a one-out double and later scored on a passed ball to push the lead to 2-0.  Price and Josh Roemen each drove in a run on a sacrifice fly in the bottom of the third inning to give Dell Rapids a 4-0 lead.  West Central pushed a run across in the top of the fourth and had the bases loaded with one out, but Roemen got Devlin Rue to hit into an inning-ending double play to get out of a jam.  Keegan Miller hit a sacrifice fly to drive home Matt Gillogly, and Dell Rapids led 5-1 after four innings of play.  Gillogly then hit an RBI single in the fifth to increase the lead.  After West Central scored another run in the top of the sixth inning, Dell Rapids scored five times in the bottom of the inning.  Price, Roemen, Carter Gullickson, and Nate McKee all had RBI hits in the inning.  West Central did score three runs in the top of the seventh, but Price retired three of the four batters he faced to close out the win for Dell Rapids.

Roemen finished the first game 3-4 with a double and two RBIs.  McKee had two hits, including a double, and an RBI.  Gillogly, Elijah Story, and Price also finished the game with two hits.  Price also had two RBIs.  Gullickson, Gillogly, Andersen, and Miller all had RBIs.  Roemen picked up the win on the mound pitching six innings giving up five runs, four earned, on four hits while walking four and striking out three.  Price pitched one inning of relief walking one batter and striking out one.

Dell Rapids then earned a 7-0 win the championship game over Vermillion.  Vermillion defeated PG/DC/WL/C 11-1 to advance to title game.  Andersen delivered the first big hit of the game for Dell Rapids in the bottom of the first.  After Dell Rapids loaded the bases, Andersen hit a bases-clearing double to left field to give Dell Rapids a 3-0 lead after the first inning.  Both pitchers were in control over the next three innings as the score remained 3-0 in favor of Dell Rapids after four complete innings.  Andersen again drove in another run in the bottom of the fifth on a hard-hit ground ball on a drawn-in infield scoring Gullickson to give Dell Rapids a 4-0 lead.  Austin Ellingson followed that hit with a two-run double to extend the lead to 6-0.  The final run for Dell Rapids came in the bottom of the sixth inning on back-to-back triples by McKee and Gillogly.

Gullickson was 3-4 in the second game with a double and two runs scored.  Andersen was 2-4 with a double and four RBIs.  McKee, Gillogly, and Ellingson all collected hits.  Ellingson had two RBIs, and Gillogly had an RBI.  Trevor Pulscher pitched the complete game shutout allowing just five hits over the seven innings while walking no batters and striking out five batters.

Dells Baseball Advances to State Tournament for 3rd Straight Year

DRSuperRegional2017_1Dell Rapids High School Baseball is headed back to the State B Tournament for the third straight year after winning the Super Regional held at Rickeman Field on Tuesday, May 23rd.

Dell Rapids won their first game against Sioux Valley 10-0 in six innings.  Josh Roemen got the scoring started right away in the first inning after scoring on a wild pitch.  Nate McKee scored moments later on passed ball.  Seth Anderson had an RBI single to drive home Matt Gillogly, and Austin Ellingson had an RBI single to score Anderson.  Dell Rapids lead 4-0 after the first inning.  Another run came across in the bottom of the second on a McKee RBI single.  Gillogly had an RBI double and then scored on an error in the fourth inning to push the lead to 7-0.  Dell Rapids would score three more in the sixth to end the game on the 10-run rule. Roemen went 3-3 in the game with three runs scored.  Gilligoly had two hits and two RBIs.  Ellingson also had two hits and two RBIs.  Elijah Story, Jay Holm, McKee, and Anderson all had hits.  Holm and Anderson also both had two RBIs each.  Roemen pitched all six innings giving up just one hit while walking two and striking out five.

After Deuel/Hamlin/Castlewood defeated Oldham-Ramona-Rutland, Dell Rapids then placed D/H/C for a birth to the state tournament on the line.  Dell Rapids went on to beat D/H/C 10-1 to earn their third straight trip to the State B Tournament.

D/H/C tied the game in the top of the second at 1-1 after a passed ball.  But Dell Rapids scored eight times in the bottom of the inning.  Eddie Price hit an RBI single and scored on an error, Gullickson scored on a wild pitch, Anderson had a two-run single, Keegan Miller had an RBI single, and Story had an RBI single to give Dell Rapids a 9-1 lead after the second inning.  The final run of the game came in the bottom of the third on an RBI single by McKee.

Gullickson was 3-4 with an RBI.  Miller finished 2-3 from the plate with an RBI.  Story, Roemen, Price, McKee, and Anderson also all had hits.  Story and Anderson had two RBIs each.  Trevor Pulscher pitched six innings giving up one run, which was unearned, on four hits with one walk and six strikeouts.  Price pitched the final inning walking three and striking out three batters.

Dell Rapids will play West Central in the opening round of the State B Tournament.  All the games are on Monday, May 29th, in Sioux Falls

Dells Baseball Advances in Region Play

DellsBaseballLogoDell Rapids took the next step towards a third straight state tournament appearance with an 11-1 opening round win in the regions against Chester/Colman-Egan/Flandreau on Monday, May 15th, in Dell Rapids.

Dells scored three runs in the bottom of the first inning.  Josh Roemen scored on an fielder’s choice RBI by Nate McKee.  Carter Gullickson scored on an error.  Seth Anderson scored on a double, and Dell Rapids led 3-0 early.  Dell Rapids scored two more in the bottom of the third on RBI singles by Austin Ellingson and Keegan Miller.  C/CE/F scored their lone run on the top of the fifth inning, but Dell Rapids answered with six in the bottom of the inning to end the game on the 10-run rule.  Anderson scored on an error, Ellingson scored on a wild pitch, Eddie Price had an RBI single, Logan Ruesink scored on an error, and Gullickson had an RBI double and then scored later in the inning on an error to end the game.

Roemen, Gullickson, Ellingson, and Miller all had two hits each.  Price, McKee, and Anderson also had hits.  Ellingson had two RBIs in the game, while Price, McKee, Gullickson, and Miller all had one RBI.  Roemen pitched all five innings giving up one earned run on two hits while walking one and striking out seven.

Dell Rapids advances to the Super Regional which will be held at Rickemen Field in Dell Rapids on Tuesday, May 23rd.  Dell Rapids will play either Volga or Madison at 3:30 p.m.  Deuel Area will play Oldham-Ramona-Rutland at 5:30 p.m.  The winners of the two games will face one another at 7:30. The winner of the Super Regional will advance to the State B Final Four.

Dells Baseball Wins Three to End Regular Season

DellsBaseball_5-7-17_1The Dell Rapids High School baseball team picked up three more wins on the final day of their regular season on Sunday, May 7th, at Rickeman Field in Dell Rapids.  Dell Rapids beat Aberdeen in a double-header by scores of 4-0 and 10-8.  Dell Rapids then defeated Baltic in a make-up game by a score of 14-10.  The three wins extended the Dell Rapids winning streak to nine straight games.

Dell Rapids scored two times in the first inning and two more in the third inning in the opening game win.  Austin Ellingson had two hits, while Josh Roemen, Eddie Price, Matt Gillogly, and Carter Gullickson all had hits.  Ellingson also had two RBIs, and Price also had an RBI.  Ellingson had a double, and Roemen had a triple.  Roemen pitched the complete game shut-out giving up just two hits while walking two and striking out nine. Aberdeen held a 4-1 lead after the first two innings, but Dell Rapids scored five times in the third inning to take the lead 6-4.  Aberdeen answered with three in the top of the fourth to regain the lead 7-6.  Dell Rapids scored two in the bottom of fourth to take the lead back.  Dells would score two more times in the bottom of the sixth and hung on for the win.  Roemen had two hits, including a triple, in the game.  Adrian Juba, Jake Steineke, Elijah Story, Price, JD Holm, Nate McKee, Gillogly, Gullickson, and Seth Anderson all collected hits.  Gillogly and Anderson each drove in two runs.  Story, Roemen, PRice, Holm, McKee, and Gullickson all had one RBI each.   Trevor Pulscher started the game pitching three innings giving up four runs, three earned, on three hits while walking two and striking out three.  Story pitched the final four innings, also giving up four runs, three earned, on five hits while walking three and striking out four.

DellsBaseball_5-7-17_3In the final game of the day, Dell Rapids scored in every inning, including five runs in the fourth, to pick up their third win of the day.  Roemen had four hits in the game and drove in two runs.  Gillogly had two hits, one of them a home run, and one RBI.  Ellingson had two more hits and two RBI.  Holm also added two hits and an RBI.  Story and Anderson also had hits.  Anderson had two RBIs.  Price started the game pitching 1 1/3 innings giving up two runs on two hits with four walks and three strikeouts.  Gillogly pitched 3 2/3 innings giving up two runs, both unearned, on four hits with four walks and a strikeout.  Gullickson closed out the game pitching two innings giving up six runs, only one earned, on three hits while walking two and striking out two.

Dell Rapids ends their regular season with a 14-4 record.  Dell Rapids will begin region play either May 14th or 15th.

Dells Baseball Wins on Senior Recognition Night

2017DellsBaseballSeniorsOn a beautiful evening for baseball, the Dell Rapids High School baseball team defeated Central Dakota 10-1 on Friday, May 5th, at Rickeman Field in Dell Rapids.  Dells Baseball recognized the seven seniors on this year’s team:  Ethan Brobjorg, Adrian Juba, Austin Ellingson, Trevor Pulscher, Josh Roemen, Nate McKee, and Seth Anderson.

Dell Rapids scored five times in the bottom of the first inning for a quick 5-0 lead.  Roemen started the offense with a lead-off triple.  Carter Gullickson drove him home with a sacrifice fly.  Matt Gillogly scored on an RBI double by McKee.  Ellingson hit a two-run single later in the inning.  Anderson scored on a wild pitch, and Elijah Story DRBaseballvsCD_5-5-17_1had an RBI single.  Dell Rapids scored two more runs in the bottom of the fourth.  McKee had an RBI single, and Roemen scored on an error to push the lead to 7-0.  Central Dakota scored their lone run on an error in the top of the fifth inning.  Dells scored two more runs in the bottom of the fifth on an RBI single by Brobjorg and Roemen.  The final run was scored in the bottom of the sixth inning on a steal of home by Anderson. Mckee had three hits in the game, including a double, and drove in two runs.  Roemen had two hits, one of them a triple, and an RBI.  Brobjorg and Ellingson both had two hits and an RBI.  Story had a hit and an RBI.  Gillogly and Logan Ruesink also tallied hits in the game.  Pulscher pitched the first two innings giving up no hits while walking three and striking out four batters.  Gillogly pitched one inning of no-hit baseball while walking three and striking out two.  Juba pitched the final four innings giving up one unearned run on one hit while walking one and striking out seven.

Dell Rapids improves to 11-4 on the year.  Dell Rapids also earned a win against Wolsey/Wessington on Thursday, May 4th, on a forfeit.  Dells now has a six-game winning streak.  Dell Rapids will wrap up their regular season game with three varsity games on Sunday, May 7th, at Rickeman Field.  They will play two games against Aberdeen starting at 12:00 p.m.  They will end the day with a game against Baltic that is scheduled to start at 5:00 p.m.

Dells Baseball Pushes Win Streak to Four

DRvsRHTDNW_5-3-17Dells Baseball pushed their current winning streak to four games, matching their longest of the season, after a 10-2 win over Redfield/Hitchcock/Tulare/Doland/Northwestern on Wednesday, May 3rd, at Rickeman Field in Dell Rapids.

Dell Rapids scored first in the bottom of the second inning on an RBI single by Josh Roemen scoring Keegan Miller.  Dell Rapids pushed the lead to 3-0 with two more runs in the bottom of the third inning.  Seth Anderson had an RBI single scoring Nate McKee.  Elijah Story drove home Anderson on another RBI single.  R/H/T/D/NW closed the gap to 3-2 scoring two runs in the top of the fourth inning.  Dell Rapids, however, broke the game open with three runs in the bottom of the fifth inning.  Miller had an RBI single, Roemen had an RBI sacrifice fly, and Logan Ruesink scored on a wild pitch. Dells scored four more in the bottom of the sixth inning.  McKee scored on a throw after a fly out, Anderson scored on an RBI walk to Eddie Price, and Carter Gullickson had an RBI single that also scored Ruesink on the throw.

Gullickson went 4-4 with a double and two RBIs in the game.  McKee, Miller, and Anderson all had two hits in the game.  Story and Roemen also collected hits.  Roemen had two RBIs, and Story, Price, Ellingson, Miller, and Anderson all had an RBI.  Price started the game on the mound for Dell Rapids pitching four innings while giving up two earned runs on three hits while giving up three walks and striking out two.  Gullickson pitched the final three innings giving up just two hits while striking out three.

Dell Rapids (9-4) will host Wolsey/Wessington on Thursday, May 4th, in a varsity only game.

Dell Rapids Belts Three HRs in Win

DellsvsORR_4-29-17The Dell Rapids baseball team belted out three home runs and had sixteen hits in an 18-2 win over Oldham-Ramona-Rutland on Thursday, April 27th, in Madison.  Five different players had multi-hit games for Dell Rapids.

Matt Gillogly put Dell Rapids on the board early with a three-run home run in the top of the first.  Seth Anderson knocked in two runs with a two-run single, and Eddie Price hit a solo home run to give Dell Rapids an early 6-0 lead after the top of the first inning.  Neither team scored until the top of the fourth inning when Dell Rapids scored 12 times in the inning.  Josh Roemen scored on a wild pitch.  Gillogly had an RBI double.  Ellingson had a two-run single to make the game 10-0.  Anderson followed with an RBI double, and Keegan Miller also had an RBI double.  Roemen drove in two more runs with a two-run single to push the lead to 14-0.  Gillogly added another RBI on a fielder’s choice ground out, and Ellingson finished the scoring with a three-run home run.  O-R-R pushed across a couple of runs in the bottom of the fifth inning, but the game was called on the 10-run rule.

Ellingson had three hits, one of them a home run, and drove in five runs.  Anderson also had three hits, one of them a double, and had three RBIs.  Gillogly had a double and home run driving in five runs.  Price also had a double and home run with an RBI.  Roemen had two hits, including a triple with two RBIs.  Jake Steineke, JD Holm, Nate McKee, and Miller also had hits.  Miller also had an RBI.  Ellingson pitched 4 1/3 innings giving up two earned runs on one hit while walking eight and striking out six.  Adrian Juba finished the final 2/3 of an inning giving up no runs on no hits with one walk.

Dell Rapids has now won three games in a row and has improved their record to 8-4 on the season.  Dell Rapids will host Redfield/Hitchcock/Tulare/Doland/Northwestern on Wednesday, May 3rd, at Rickeman Field.  The varsity game will start at 5:30 p.m. and will be webcast on Big Sioux Media.

Another Double-Header Sweep for Dell Rapids Baseball

DellsBaseballLogoDell Rapids won two more games on Sunday, April 23rd, as they won both games of a double-header against Chester/Colman-Egan/Flandreau in Flandreau.  Dell Rapids won the first game in five innings by a score of 13-3.  Dell Rapids then won the second game 14-7.

Dell Rapids led start to finish in the first game.  The first run of the game was scored by Logan Ruesink on a passed ball in the top of the first inning.  Dell Rapids scored three more time in the top of the third.  Josh Roemen scored on a wild pitch, and a two-run single by Seth Anderson.  In the top of the fourth inning, Dell Rapids scored three runs again.  Carter Gullickson had an RBI ground out, Nate McKee hit an RBI triple, and McKee scored on a wild pitch to put Dell Rapids ahead 7-0.  C/C-E/F pushed across three runs in the bottom of the fourth inning, but Dell Rapids scored six times in the top of the fifth.  Adrian Juba had an RBI single and then scored on a wild pitch, Gullickson had an RBI double, Matt Gillogly had an RBI single and scored on a wild pitch, and McKee scored on a passed ball.  C/C-E/F was held scoreless in the fifth inning to end the game on the 10-run rule.

Roemen had three hits in the first game.  Juba, Eddie Price, McKee, Gillogly, Gullickson, and Anderson all had a hit.  Anderson and Gullickson each had two RBIs.  Juba, McKee, and Gillogly all had an RBI as well.  Gillogly pitched the first 3 1/3 innings giving up three earned runs on one hit while walking four and striking out four.  Gullickson pitched the last inning and 2/3 giving up no runs on no hits while walking two and striking out two.

In the second game, C/C-E/F jumped out to an early 2-0 lead after the first inning.  Dell Rapids scored the next six runs.  Anderson scored on a wild pitch in the top of the second inning.  Gillogly hit a two-run home run in the top of the third inning.  Roemen and Gullickson had back-to-back RBI triples, and Gillogly added an RBI double in the top of the fourth inning to give Dell Rapids a 6-2 lead.  C/C-E/F scored five times in the bottom of the fifth inning to regain the lead at 7-6.  However, Dell Rapids scored the final eight runs of the game, scoring three in the sixth and five more in the seventh.  Price had an RBI double, JD Holm hit an RBI sacrifice fly, and Austin Ellingson had an RBI single in the sixth inning.  McKee had a two-run triple and scored on a passed ball, Elijah story had an RBI triple, and Logan Stone scored on a wild pitch in the seventh.

Gillogly had four hits and three RBIs in the second game.  Story, NcKee, and Gullickson all had two hits each.  Roemen, Price, Ellingson, and Anderson also each had a hit.  McKee had two RBIs, and Story, Roemen, Price, Holm, Gullickson, and Ellingson all had one RBI.  Price started the game on the mound pitching three innings while giving up two runs, one earned, on three hits while walking four and striking out seven.  Story pitched the next two innings giving up five runs, one earned, on two hits while walking two and striking out seven.  Roemen finished the game pitching two innings giving up no runs on one hit while walking one and striking out three.

Dell Rapids (7-4) will host Baltic on Tuesday, April 25th, at Rickemen Field.  Varsity game will start at 5:30 p.m.

Dell Rapids Baseball Soon to have Three College Players

By this time next year, three players from Dell Rapids baseball will be playing college baseball.  Trey Randel and Brett Mogen are currently in their freshman year playing college baseball, and Josh Roemen will be playing college baseball next year.

Randel is currently in his first year at Dakota State University playing baseball for the Trojans.  Randel has started many games this season at second base and pitcher for the Trojans.  Currently DSU is 2-26 overall this season and 2-18 in the North Star Athletic Association.  Randel plans to play amateur baseball this summer for Dell Rapids PBR.

Mogen is also in his first year, but at South Dakota State University, playing for the Jacks. Mogen is a pitcher, getting most of his time in middle relief on the mound this season.  Currently Mogen has compiled 31.0 innings giving up 17 runs, 16 earned, on 31 hits with 10 walks and 26 strikeouts.  Mogen has an 0-2 record with a 4.65 ERA for the Jacks who are 16-19 on the season and 9-9 in the Summit League.  Mogen will play another year of Legion baseball this summer for Dell Rapids.

Randel and Mogen will get to face off against one another when the Jacks host Dakota State on Wednesday, April 25th, at 3:00 p.m. in Brookings.

Roemen will join the college ranks next year when he takes the field for the Mount Marty Lancers.  Roemen will also play Legion baseball this summer for Dell Rapids and is currently on the Dell Rapids HS Club baseball team.
