13-14 Dells-M Team takes 2nd at I-29 Tournament

The Dell Rapids 13-14 Dells-M team took second place out of 23 teams at the I-29 League Tournament Friday, June 6th through Sunday, June 8th.  Dells-M opened up the tournament with a 4-1 win over Dells-E.  They then defeated Madison-13s by a score of 8-0.  Dells-M beat Watertown 13-3 in the semifinal round.  Harrisburg Black did defeat Dells-M 9-3 in the championship game.

West Central Edges Dell Rapids Late for Playoff Win

West Central scored three runs in the final two innings to break open a scoreless pitching duel and win 3-0 in the first round of high school baseball playoffs Tuesday, May 13th, at Rickeman Field.

Dell Rapids starting pitcher Cody Nielsen and West Central starter Matt Johannsen battled for five scoreless innings. Nielsen struck out 13 and gave up three walks and three hits in five innings. He was removed after the fifth inning once he reached a maximum pitch count limit. Johannsen also allowed three walks and three hits and struck out 10 in six innings.

West Central scratched out two runs in the sixth inning. They took advantage of three walks, a base hit and a sacrifice fly to take the lead. West Central scored one more in the seventh inning on a double and an infield error.

Dell Rapids came up with three hits. Tim Wilhelmsen doubled. Casey Hansen and Tanner Solberg both hit singles. West Central had five hits.

Dell Rapids (7-5) was eliminated from postseason play. West Central continues at Garretson Wednesday, May 14th, in the second round.

Dell Rapids Baseball Team to Host 1st Round Playoff Game

Dell Rapids earned a two seed, and they will host third-seeded West Central in the first round of the high school baseball playoffs.  The game will be at Rickeman Field on Tuesday, May 13th, at 6:00 p.m.

#1 Garretson will be hosting #4 McCook Central also on Tuesday.  The winners of the two games will play in the next round.

Dell Rapids finished the regular season on Thursday, May 8th, with a 7-4 record.

 

Dell Rapids 7, Sioux Falls Christian 4

Tim Wilhelmsen belted a three-run home run to propel Dell Rapids past Sioux Falls Christian 7-4 on Thursday, May 8th, in Chancellor.

Wilhelmsen connected with Cody Nielsen and Zane Schumacher aboard to give Dell Rapids its first lead of the game at 6-4 in the fifth inning.  Dell Rapids scored two in the top of the first when Nate McKee and Nielsen both walked and then came home on an error on a towering infield fly by Wilhelmsen. Sioux Falls Christian answered with one in the bottom of the first and three more in the third.

Wilhelmsen led the offense with two hits and four RBI. McKee added two hits and a walk. Tanner Solberg, Nielsen and Matt Juba all had hits for Dell Rapids.

Solberg was the winning pitcher. He paced Dell Rapids with four innings and allowed four runs on five hits and one walk while striking out five. Josh Roemen completed two innings of scoreless middle relief.  He gave up two hits and struck out three. Wilhelmsen closed out the last inning for a save. He gave up one single then recorded three outs in a row to preserve the win.

Garretson 6, Dell Rapids 2

Garretson jumped out to a 5-0 lead after two innings and held off Dell Rapids for a 6-2 win Wednesday, May 7th, in Garretson.

Garretson scored three runs in the first inning by taking advantage of three infield errors by Dell Rapids.  Tyler Willems and Brady Schlueter made Dell Rapids pay with RBI hits.   Two more runs scored for Garretson in the second before Dell Rapids broke through with a run in the third. Brett Mogen walked, pinch runner Mason Peter advanced to second on Ben Gillogly’s walk, and then scored on Tanner Solberg’s RBI single. Garretson added a run in the third to go up 6-1. Garretson was held hitless the final four innings of the game.

Dell Rapids (6-4) put together a rally in the top of the seventh inning when Nate McKee also drew a walk. Wilhelmsen scored when Josh Roemen singled to left. Dell Rapids loaded the bases with a walk by Gillogly, but Jesse Brockhouse came on in relief to end the threat with a strikeout.

Garretson outhit Dell Rapids 6-3. Solberg, Nielsen and Roemen recorded the three Dell Rapids hits.  Brett Mogen took the loss for Dell Rapids. He pitched four innings and gave up six runs – two earned – on six hits while striking out four. Cody Nielsen threw two innings of scoreless relief. He walked three and struck out three.

Sioux Valley Defeats Dell Rapids in Baseball Action

Sioux Valley 4, Dell Rapids 3

Sioux Valley outhit Dell Rapids 7-5 to win at Volga on Sunday, May 4.  Dell Rapids scored first in the top of the second inning. Tim Wilhelmsen singled with one out. Austin Kubly reached base on a walk. Casey Hansen singled home Wilhelmsen. Tanner Solberg singled home Kubly to give Dell Rapids to a 2-0 lead.

Sioux Valley answered in the bottom of the third. The first three hitters reached on two singles and a walk. Two runs scored on an error at home. Sioux Valley scored one in the fifth and one in the sixth to go ahead 4-2.

Dell Rapids (6-3) rallied in the top of the final inning. Josh Roemen reached first on an error and scored on Joe Muston’s RBI single. Sioux Valley recorded a strike out to end the game.

Solberg, Muston, Wilhelmsen, Matt Juba and Casey Hansen collected hits for Dell Rapids.  Cody Nielsen pitched the first two scoreless innings for Dell Rapids. He gave up three walks, no hits and struck out three. Brett Mogen pitched three innings of relief and took the loss. He gave up six hits, three runs, one walk and struck out three. Roemen pitched the six inning. He allowed one run on one hit and two walks.

Dell Rapids travels to Garretson on Wednesday, May 7.

Dell Rapids rallied with two runs in the fourth and one in the fifth to overtake Sioux Valley in the JV game 4-3.

Dell Rapids scored in the top of the first when Carter Gullickson singled and eventually scored on a bases loaded walk by Nick Hoffman. Sioux Valley scored two in the bottom of the first and one in the third to jump out 3-1.

Elijah Story and Dawson Kerzman both reached base on walks in the fourth. Gullickson singled both runners home to tie the game. In the final inning Mason Peter walked, stole second and third and scored on a botched pickoff play for the winning run.

Dell Rapids (4-4) was led on offense by Gullickson’s two hits. Casey Hansen singled and Dawson Kerzman drilled a double.

Story picked up the pitching victory with two innings of scoreless relief. He gave up two hits and struck out three. Trevor Pulscher pitched the first three innings. He allowed three runs on four hits and two walks while striking out three.

Peters preserved the win with an over the shoulder catch in centerfield with two outs in the bottom of the last inning and the bases full.

Dell Rapids Wins Fourth in a Row

Dell Rapids 7, Canton 5

Nate McKee doubled home Zane Schumacher and Cody Nielsen in the top of the last inning to snap a 5-5 tie and give Dell Rapids a 7-5 win over Canton on Sunday, April 27th, in Canton.

Dell Rapids scored two runs in the top of the first inning. Tanner Solberg reached base on a throwing error, and Joe Muston followed with a walk. Schumacher doubled both home on a two-out full count pitch. Canton answered with two runs in the bottom of the first.

Dell Rapids scored three runs in the third inning. Josh Roemen sailed a home run down the right field line to drive in two runs.

Muston, Schumacher, Nielsen, McKee, Ben Gillogly and Matt Juba each had one hit for Dell Rapids.

Roemen pitched the first four innings for Dell Rapids. He gave up four runs – all unearned – on four hits and three walks while striking out four. Solberg picked up a win in three innings of relief.  He gave up one unearned run on two hits and three walks while striking out two.

Dell Rapids (6-2) plays Sioux Falls Christian in Chancellor on Wednesday, April 30 at 5:30 p.m.

Dell Rapids Defeats West Central in Baseball Action

Dell Rapids 9, West Central 3

Tanner Solberg and Cody Nielsen both pounded three hits to lead Dell Rapids past West Central 9-3 on Friday, April 25th, in Humboldt.

Solberg started the game with a double and scored on Nielsen’s single. In the second inning, Solberg drilled a three-run home run to score Nate McKee and Casey Hansen to give Dell Rapids a 4-0 lead. Dell Rapids added three more runs in the third inning. Nielsen started with a double, Tim Wilhelmsen walked, and McKee singled them both home. Josh Roemen followed with a single to score McKee.

Solberg and Nielsen both hit a home run, double and single in the game.

West Central answered with three runs in the bottom of the fourth. However, Dell Rapids put the game away with a solo home run by Nielsen in the sixth, and added another run by Roemen in the seventh.

Nielsen pitched the first four innings. He struck out six while giving up four hits and three runs. Solberg completed the last three innings, giving up no runes on one hit and struck out two.

Dell Rapids Baseball Earns Win Over Lennox

Nate McKee led an 11-hit Dell Rapids effort with three hits – two singles and a triple – in an 11-3 win over Lennox on Wednesday, April 23rd, in Lennox

Casey Hansen added two singles. Carter Gullickson laced a double and drove in two runs. Tanner Solberg, Cody Nielsen, Brett Mogen, Josh Roemen and Ben Gillogly all singled.

Joe Muston picked up a win with two innings of 1-run pitching. He walked six but gave up no hits. Trevor Pulscher followed with two innings of relief. He gave up one walk, one hit and two runs. Solberg blanked Lennox over the final three innings. He accounted for all nine outs with six strikeouts and three assists to first base on tappers back to the mound.

Travis Cownie singled for the only Lennox hit.

Dell Rapids (4-2) plays at West Central on Friday, April 25.

Dell Rapids JV used 12 walks and six timely hits to win 12-2.

Trey Randel was credited with the pitching victory. He recorded seven strikeouts in the first three innings and gave up two runs on three hits and four walks. Elijah Story shut out Lennox JV

in the final two innings.

Randel singled twice and drove in two runs for Dell Rapids JV (4-2). Story tripled. Carter Gullickson, Josh Roemen and Dawson Kerzman all singled.

Dell Rapids Splits Double-Header vs McCook

McCook outlasted Dell Rapids 7-6 in 10 innings on Monday, April 21st, in Dell Rapids in the first game of a doubleheader.

Dell Rapids scored first when Joe Muston singled, stole second and scored on Cody Nielsen’s RBI single in the first inning. McCook answered in the third inning when Ross Roling walked, stole second, and eventually scored on a passed ball.

McCook scored two in the fourth while Dell Rapids managed one run by Zane Schumacher.

McCook extended its lead with two runs in the fifth. Dell Rapids tied the game with three runs in the bottom half  of the fifth inning by capitalizing on four errors. Muston, Nielsen and Schumacher all scored.

McCook regained the lead with one run in the top of the seventh. Dell Rapids tied the game when Nielsen singled, stole second and third base, and advanced home on a throwing error. Both teams were held scoreless until McCook finished the game with one run in the tenth.

Dell Rapids came up with five hits. Nielsen singled and doubled. Muston, Schumacher and Brett Mogen each had one single. McCook tallied 10 hits. Anthony Tuschen and Jesse Muth both had two hits.

Nielsen pitched the first four innings. He struck out four while allowing four walks, two hits and three runs. Josh Roemen kept Dell Rapids in the game with five innings of middle relief. He struck out six and gave up six hits, one walk and three runs, all unearned. Trevor Pulscher was tagged with the loss. He gave up two hits and a run that scored on an infield error.

Dell Rapids came back for a 7-4 win in the second game of the doubleheader.

The bats came alive for Dell Rapids as they scored all seven runs in the first two innings. In the top of the first, Muston and Nielsen both walked and were driven home by Ben Gillogly’s single. In the second inning Dell Rapids added five more runs. Matt Juba singled, Casey Hansen walked and Ryan Geraets singled. Tanner Solberg doubled to drive home Juba and Hansen. Muston followed with a single to send Geraets home. Tim Wilhelmsen lined a double in the gap to score Muston.

McCook managed one run in the first six innings. Tim Gassman singled and eventually scored. McCook rallied for three runs in the seventh inning on four singles but came up short.

Juba singled twice to lead the 7-hit Dell Rapids effort. Tanner Solberg and Tim Wilhelmsen doubled. Muston, Gillogly and Geraets all contributed singles. McCook had 10 hits. Isaac Anderson and Cole Cheeseman both had two hits.

Brett Mogen earned the pitching win. He threw 6 1/3 innings. He gave up two runs, seven hits and one walk while striking out seven. Wilhelmsen recorded a save by getting the final two outs.

Dell Rapids Baseball Earns Win over Tea

Cody Nielsen’s grand slam in the first inning propelled Dell Rapids to a 12-4 win over Tea on Friday, April 18, at Rickeman Field.

Tanner Solberg reached first on a walk to start the inning, Casey Hansen was hit by a pitch, and Tim Wilhelmsen walked to load the bases. Nielsen then took an 0-2 pitch over the left field fence to plate four runs.

Dell Rapids finished with nine hits. Solberg singled twice, Zane Schumacher doubled and singled, and Austin Kubly singled twice. Hansen and Wilhelmsen both added singles.

Solberg picked up the pitching win. He threw the first four innings and gave up three unearned runs on two hits and two walks while striking out four. Trevor Pulscher pitched two innings of middle relief. He gave up one run on no hits with three strikeouts. Elijah Story closed out the final inning by getting all three hitters out he faced on just eight pitches.

Dell Rapids will travel to Lennox on Wednesday, April 23.

Dell Rapids rallied with five runs in the third inning to overcome a 6-5 deficit and beat Tea in a JV game Friday, April 18.

Carter Gullickson scored twice, hit two singles and contributed two stolen bases to lead the offense. Nate McKee also singled twice. Josh Roemen tripled, Mason Peter doubled, and Trey Randel, Seth Andersen, Nick Hoffman and Justin Dorn all added singles in the 10-hit attack.

McKee was the winning pitcher in relief. He gave up six runs – two earned – on three hits and two walks. He struck out two. Peter was the starting pitcher. He threw two innings and gave up two hits while striking out two.

Dell Rapids JV (2-1) played McCook on Monday, April 21 and travels to Lennox on Wednesday, April 23.

West Central Rolls Past Dell Rapids in Baseball Action

West Central took advantage of seven Dell Rapids errors to pull away for a 10-1 high school baseball win on Friday, April 11, at Rickeman Field.  West Central (2-0) outhit Dell Rapids 10-5 and made just one error.

Tim Wilhelmsen singled twice for Dell Rapids. Cody Nielsen doubled and scored on an RBI single by Brett Mogen in the second inning. Tanner Solberg also singled.

Riley Danielson, Dylan From, and Riley Schroder each had two hits for West Central.

Mogen took the pitching loss. He completed the first four innings and gave up three runs on five hits.  Solberg pitched 1 1/3 innings of middle relief. He allowed seven runs on five hits. Joe Muston followed with 2/3 innings and gave up no runs on one hit. Josh Roemen finished the final inning and gave up no runs and no hits.

Dell Rapids (1-1) plays McCook Central on Monday, April 14.  The April 13 game with Tea was postponed.   A new date has not been set.

West Central broke open a 6-4 game with 15 runs in the top of the fourth inning for a 21-4 win in junior varsity baseball action on Friday, April 11.  Eight Dell Rapids errors – six in one inning – fueled the West Central rally. West Central finished with 10 hits.  Dell Rapids had four hits.

Josh Roemen doubled and singled for Dell Rapids. Carter Gullickson singled and scored twice. Mason Peter singled and drove in a run.
