Arlys Stanford

Arlys StanfordArlys Stanford, 92, died Friday, March 4, 2016, at Heritage Senior Living.

Arlys Jean Phelps was born Feb. 25, 1924, at Rutland, to Donald and Hazel (Anderson) Phelps. She graduated from Madison High School and received on-the-job training at Madison Community Hospital as a surgical technician. She then worked at Madison Community Hospital for over 37 years. Arlys married John “Jack” Stanford on June 12, 1943, at Pipestone, MN.

Arlys was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church and ladies groups, and she enjoyed playing cards and walking.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband in 1978; one sister, Mary Peterson; four brothers, Edward, Ronald, Dale and Harold Phelps; and two grandsons, Robert and Jesse Alfson.

Survivors include four sons, Roger (Bonnie) of Madison, Rodney (Sandy) of Dell Rapids, Terry of Winter Park, CO and Keith of Sheridan, WY; three daughters, Linda (Richard) Nighbert of Madison, Patsy Mikel of Sioux Falls and Karen (Rick) Alfson of Madison; 15 grandchildren; 29 great grandchildren; two great-great grandchildren; three brothers, Darrell (Linda) Phelps of Madison, Thomas (Joan) Phelps of Sioux Falls and Richard (Janney) Phelps of Madison; and two sisters, JoAnn (Duane) McNeil of Ramona, CA and Nancy (Larry) Chase of Sioux Falls.Funeral Services 11 AM Wed. at Trinity Lutheran Church with burial at Graceland Cemetery. Family present for visitation 5-7 PM Tuesday with a Prayer Service at 7 PM at Ellsworth Funeral Home. Visitation will continue one hour prior to the service at the church. On-Line Condolences may be left at Ellsworth Funeral Home.
