The Dell Rapids Quarrier girls golf team participated in the Sioux Falls Christian Invite on Friday, May 3rd. The Quarriers finished with a team score of 494. Parkston won the event with a team score of 326. Aleza Kirschenmann had the best round for the Quarriers with a 111 to finish in 15th place. April Tomes finished with a 115, Natasha Reit shot a 124, Courtney Sorsen and Brittnay Welbig each finished with a round of 144, and Sarah Haak shot a 145. Head coach Jeff Dvorak said, “I thought Aleza had a decent round considering the weather conditions. Today we were not mentally strong, and it seemed that when one or two things didn’t go our way, we threw in the towel. We need to be tougher mentally and put away our bad shots. I’m still proud of the fact that the girls had pretty good attitudes despite the cold and wind.”
On Monday, May 6th, the Quarriers played in the Big Sioux Conference Meet held at Two Rivers Golf Course. Dell Rapids finished with a team score of 426 for 5th place out of eight teams. Sioux Falls Christian finished first as a team with a score 328. Kirschenmann again had the best individual round for the Quarriers with a 99, finishing just two spots from a medal. Tomes finished with a 102, Reit shot a 109, Haak had a round of 116, Sorsen shot a 132, Mariah Warne finished with a 118, Welbig shot a 121, and Taylor Brown finished the day with a 144. Dvorak said, “We had two or three girls shoot their best scores, and our team score was the lowest of the year. It feels like we are definitely going in the right direction. Hopefully, the weather holds, and we’re able to practice this week so that we are at our best for Regions next Monday. These girls are really sponges and very coachable; they want to work on their game and get better.”
In the final tune-up before Regions, the Quarriers played in the Harrisburg Invite on Thursday, May 9th. Dell Rapids finished 9th out of 13 teams with a team score of 439. Parkston won the event with a team score of 305. Tomes had the best round for the Quarriers with a 102. Kirschenmann shot a 104, Haak finished with a 113, Reit shot a 120, and Sorsen and Warne each had a round of 128. Dvorak said, “Once again, I was proud of our showing today. Each tournament finds someone new posting a personal best and today was no different. I feel that Monday’s Region tournament up in Sisseton is a place where we could have everyone show up, and we could put up our best team score of the year. Today’s conditions were miserable and I thought all the girls handled themselves well.”
The Quarriers will play in the Region meet on Monday, May 13th, in Sisseton.
