Quarrier Football Wins 6th Straight

October 18, 2014 by Matt Larson, Big Sioux Media

DRHSvsTV_FB_10-17-14_3The Dell Rapids Quarrier football team earned their sixth straight win on a great defensive effort after defeating the Tri-Valley Mustangs 27-7 on Friday, October 17th, at Tri-Valley High School.

The Quarrier offense got off to a slow start to the game.  Dell Rapids only ran four offensive plays, with one of those plays a punt, in the entire first quarter.  However, the Quarrier defense did not allow any points in the first quarter.

Tri-Valley was able to push across a score with 11:17 to go in the second quarter on an 8-yard touchdown run by Nick Buchmann.  The extra point was good by DRHSvsTV_FB_10-17-14_2Sebastian Granzow, and Tri-Valley had a 7-0 lead.  Dell Rapids was finally able to put together a solid drive midway through the second quarter.  The drive was capped off by a 10-yard touchdown pass from Jase Nelson to Ben Gillogly with 3:23 left in the half.  The extra point was good by Keegan Hemenway, and the Quarriers tied the game at 7-7.  With under 2:00 to play, the Dell Rapids defense recovered a fumble deep in Tri-Valley territory, and the Quarriers turned it into six more points.  Riley Schmidt threw a 4-yard touchdown pass to Riley Jurgensen with :27 left in the half to give Dell Rapids a 13-7 lead at halftime.

The Dell Rapids defense held strong in the second half giving up zero points.  The Quarrier offense was unable to score in the third quarter, but Schmidt scored on a 4-yard run one play into the fourth quarter.  The two-point conversion was no good, and Dell Rapids held a 19-7 lead with 11:55 to go in the game.  Schmidt DRHSvsTV_FB_10-17-14_1found the endzone again on a 56-yard run with 3:01 to go.  Nelson was able to find Hemenway in the endzone on a pass to convert on the two-point conversion to give Dell Rapids a 27-7 win.

Dell Rapids improves to 6-1 on the year.  The Quarriers will wrap up the regular season at home on Thursday, October 23rd, when they host the Vermillion Tanagers.
