Garret Frost ran for four touchdowns and passed for another to help lead the Dell Rapids St Mary Cardinals to a 42-26 win over the Elkton/Lake Benton Elks on Friday, September 30th, at Rickeman Field in Dell Rapids.
St Mary scored first with 6:27 to go in the first quarter when Frost ran into the endzone from three yards away. Evan Brown scored the two point conversion, and the Cardinals led 8-0. That was the only score of the first quarter. The Elks scored early in the second quarter. With 9:28 to go, Blaine Hefti scored on a five-yard run. The two-point conversion was no good to keep the score at 8-6.
The Cardinals scored two times before halftime after the Elk touchdown. With 6:06 to go in the quarter, Luke Brown connected with E. Brown from 13 yards away for a touchdown. E. Brown again scored the two-point conversion to push the lead to 16-6. St Mary scored again with just :43 left in the half when Frost threw a 25-yard touchdown pass to E. Brown. Frost then connected with Zach Geraets for the two-point conversion to give the Cardinals a 24-6 lead heading into halftime.
Elkton/Lake Benton scored on their first drive of the third quarter. Caleb Goertz scored on a seven-yard run with 7:32 to go in the third quarter. The two-point conversion was no good, and the St Mary lead was cut to 24-12. That’s when Frost struck for three touchdowns in a row.
Frost scored his second touchdown of the game with 2:52 to go in the third quarter from six yards away to give St Mary a 30-12 lead. Frost scored again early in the fourth quarter with 9:48 to go. He scored from six yards away again to push the lead to 36-12. Frost scored again from six yards away with 5:40 to go in the game to put St Mary ahead 42-12. The Elks were able to get two more scores before the end of the game. Trevor Sik had a 74-yard kickoff return for a touchdown with 5:27 to go in the game. Devin Sopko had a 16-yard touchdown run with :28 left to play for the final score.
The Cardinals improve to 2-4 on the season. St Mary will travel to White to play the Deubrook Area Dolphins on Friday, October 7th. Big Sioux Media will try to cover the game.
