The De Smet Bulldog football team earned a home win over the Dell Rapids St Mary Cardinals on Friday, September 1st. After just a 14-8 early in the third quarter, the Bulldogs pulled away for a 32-14 victory.
De Smet scored two times in the first quarter. Kadyn Fast had a four-yard touchdown run early in the first quarter. A two-point conversion made the score 8-0. Fast would score again later in the quarter on a 17-yard run for a 14-0 lead. Neither team would score in the second quarter, and De Smet lead 14-0 at halftime.
The Dell Rapids St Mary Cardinals started the second half by recovering an onside kick. They turned that possession into a touchdown on a 38-yard run. A made two-point conversion pulled the Cardinals within six, 14-8. About midway through the third quarter, Britt Carlson connected with Fast on a 24-yard touchdown pass on fourth down to push the lead to 20-8. And then with about three minutes left in the quarter, Fast had a 65-yard punt return for a touchdown to extend the lead to 26-8. Trace Van Regenmorter added a 15-yard touchdown run in the fourth quarter. The Cardinals added one more score late in the final two and a half minutes on a five-yard run.
De Smet finished with 202 yards of total offense, 144 rushing yards and 58 passing yards. The Cardinals had 237 yards of total offense, 164 rushing yards and 73 passing yards.
Fast had 11 carries for 68 yards and two rushing touchdowns, two catches for 32 yards and a receiving touchdown, along with a punt return for a touchdown. Carlson had eight carries for 25 yards, and Van Regenmorter had six carries for 29 yards and a touchdown. Carlson was 4-9 passing for 58 yards and a touchdown.
Slayten Wilkinson led the defense with 14 tackles and a sack. Tom Aughenbaugh had three tackles and an interception. Van Regenmorter had three tackles and a fumble recovery. Tristan Olson had two tackles and a fumble recovery. Fast and Grant Wilkinson both had three tackles each.
Fast and S Wilkinson were named the Legend Seeds players of the game.
