The De Smet Bulldog volleyball team hosted the Sioux Valley Cossacks on Tuesday, September 17th. The Cossacks won the four-set match by scores of 25-17, 23-25, 25-18, and 25-16.
Sioux Valley opened the first set with a 4-1 run. They led 11-7, but the Bulldogs got within two points, 13-11. The Cossacks went back in front by five, 16-11, only to have De Smet get within two points again, 16-14. Sioux Valley then went on a 5-1 run for a 21-15 lead and took the first set 25-17. After a 4-4 tie to start the second set, De Smet went on an 8-4 scoring run for a 12-8 lead. The Bulldogs led 18-15, but Sioux Valley rallied to tie the score 18-18. The score was tied again 20-20, but De Smet finished with a 5-3 scoring advantage for a 25-23 win.
The third set start with four ties of scores 2-2, 4-4, 6-6-, and 8-8. Sioux Valley then scored the next three points for an 11-8 lead. That little spurt was just enough momentum to keep them in front the rest of the set. They extended the lead to 21-16 before finishing with a 25-18 win. The Cossacks started the fourth set with a 7-2 run. De Smet rallied to cut the lead to 8-6. Sioux Valley, however, responded with a 7-3 run for a 15-9 score. The lead increased to 23-16 before the Cossacks won 25-16 to take the match.
