Warbirds Hold off De Smet in Volleyball Action

The De Smet Bulldogs played a road match against the Wolsey-Wessington Warbirds on Tuesday, September 3rd.  The Warbirds held off a big Bulldog rally for a 3-2 match win.

De Smet had a slim 7-6 lead early in the first set.  Wolsey-Wessington went on a 5-2 run for an 11-9 lead.  The Warbirds continued to lead 14-13 before the Bulldogs went on a 4-0 run to regain the lead 17-14.  De Smet continued to lead 20-17, but Wolsey-Wessington finished the first set on an 8-1 run for a 25-21 win.  The Bulldogs started the second set with a 7-4 lead.  Wolsey-Wessington tied the score 10-10.  The Warbirds continued with their momentum the rest of the set for a 25-16 win.

De Smet was able to regroup for the third set.  After a 7-7 tie, the Bulldogs slowly started to pull away.  They led 12-11 and then 18-14.  After holding a 24-20 lead, De Smet finished the third set with a 25-22 lead.  Wolsey-Wessington jumped out to a 5-1 lead to start the fourth set.  They stayed in front and held leads of 14-9, 18-14, and 20-17.  De Smet rallied to the the score 20-20.  After a 22-22 tie, the Bulldogs finished the set with a 3-0 run for a 25-22 win.  The win in the fourth set forced a fifth set.

The Bulldogs got down by two points early, but went on a 5-1 run for a 5-3 lead.  De Smet still led 10-8, but that’s when the Warbirds went on one final run.  Wolsey-Wessington tied the score 10-10 and then closed out the match on a 5-1 run to win 15-11 and win the match.
