Burke Reaches 1,000 Career Points, Bulldogs Fall to Elks

For the second straight night, the De Smet Bulldogs were able to celebrate a 1,000 point career milestone.  Jade Burke reached 1,000 points for her career against the Elkton-Lake Benton Elks on Friday, February 3rd.  The Bulldogs (6-10), however, lost to the Elks 52-49 in the game.

Elkton-Lake Benton was able to maintain a lead for most of the game, and every time De Smet made a run, the Elks had an answer.  The Bulldogs trailed 14-11 at the end of the fist quarter and 26-21 at halftime.  De Smet made a run in the third quarter and got within a point 28-27, but the Elks responded with a 6-0 run for a 34-27 lead.  Elkton-Lake Benton led 39-34 heading into the fourth quarter.  The lead grew to 46-38, but once again De Smet pulled within a point, 46-45.  The Elks made enough free throws down the stretch and then stole a pass in the closing seconds that kept De Smet from trying a game-tying shot.

De Smet shot 35% (17-49) overall, but just 2-21 on three-point attempts and 13-23 from the free-throw line.  Elkton-Lake Benton shot 39% (18-46) overall, 2-9 from three-point area, and 14-26 from the free-throw line.

Burke finished with 26 points and seven rebounds.  Hazel Luethmers added 12 points, eight rebounds, and four steals.  Mirra Beck had eight points, seven rebounds, and four assists.  Alyssa Asleson had six rebounds, and Cori Birkel finished with two points and five rebounds.
