The St Mary’s Cardinal volleyball team’s winning streak has hit 14 straight matches after wins on back-to-back nights. They earned a home win on Monday, September 21st against Ethan and then a road win in Howard on Tuesday, September 22nd. During this current winning streak, the Cardinals have only lost two sets.
St Mary’s 3, Ethan 0
The Cardinals won the home match on Monday over the Rustlers by set scores of 25-20, 26-25, and 25-10.
Ethan opened the first set with a quick 5-1 lead. St Mary’s followed that with a 7-1 run to go in front 8-7. After a 9-9 tie, Ethan took a 13-11 lead. The Cardinals didn’t let that lead last long. They went on an 8-3 spurt to go back in front 19-16. They would increase the lead to 22-18 and stay in front to the 25-20 win.
The Rustlers started the second set with a quick 4-1 run. They continued to lead by three, 8-5, before extending the advantage to 11-5. St Mary’s regrouped and went on a 7 -1 run to tie the score 12-12. The two teams went back and forth to ties of 15-15, 18-18, 21-21, 23-23, and 24-24. The Cardinals finally took advantage of the one-point lead at 25-24 and scored the set-winning point for a 26-24 victory.
After a 3-3 start to the third, the Cardinals took a slim one point lead at 5-4 and 7-6. That’s when St Mary’s took control of the set. The Cardinals went on a 14-0 run to a 21-6 lead. They cruised to the finish of 25-10 to win the match.

The Cardinals rolled to a straight set win over the Tigers on Tuesday by scores of 25-9, 25-10, and 25-14. They got an early lead in each of the sets and cruised to victories in all three sets.
In the opening set, St Mary’s started with a 4-1 lead. They pushed that lead to 9-4 and then to 12-6. The Cardinals kept rolling and built a 22-9 lead before scoring the final three points for the win. The second set started with another quick 5-1 spurt by St Mary’s. They quickly grew that lead to double digits at 14-4. The Cardinals had no trouble the rest of the way to a 25-10 win. The third set started a little closer with a 5-3 Cardinal lead. St Mary’s increased the advantage to six points at 11-5 and 17-11. The Cardinals finished the match on an 8-3 run for the win.
