The St Mary’s Cardinal volleyball team kept their winning streak going with a straight set win over the Deubrook Area Dolphins at home on Thursday, September 17th. The Cardinals took the hard-fought battle by set scores of 25-22, 24-21, and 25-18.
The Dolphins started with a 5-1 run to open the match. The Cardinals cut the lead down to one point, 9-8, but Deubrook pushed their lead to five points, 14-9. St Mary’s trailed 17-13, but went on a 5-0 run to take an 18-17 lead. The set was tied at 19-19 before the Cardinals grabbed a 22-21 advantage. They rode that to a 25-22 win in the first set.
The second set started with a tie score of 2-2 and 5-5. The Cardinals scored the next three points for an 8-5 lead. They extended that lead to 11-7, but Deubrook went on a 5-0 run to in front 12-11. They continued to lead by a point, 16-15, but St Mary’s went on a 4-1 run to retake the lead 19-17. That little spurt kept them in front the rest of the way to a 25-21 victory.
The third set also started with tie scores of 2-2 and 4-4. St Mary’s grabbed an 8-6 lead and stayed in front by two points at 11-9. They would slowly extend their lead to 16-11, 20-13, and then to 22-14. The Cardinals would close out the match with the 25-18 win.
St Mary’s has now won 12 straight matches since the season-opening loss to Estelline/Hendricks.
