The Dell Rapids St Mary Cardinal girls basketball team got their first road win and second of the year on Thursday, January 4th. The Cardinals put forth a strong second half defensive effort in a 52-38 win over the Estelline/Hendricks Redhawks.
The Redhawks had a lead of six points at one point in the first quarter and ended the quarter with a 17-13 lead. Estelline/Hendricks scored the first six points of the second quarter for a 23-13 lead midway through the quarter. St Mary finished the quarter on a 6-1 run to cut the lead to 24-19. St Mary then had a strong second half. The Cardinals outscored the Redhawks 17-8 in the third quarter for a 36-32 lead heading into the fourth quarter. The defense then held the Redhawks to just six points in the fourth quarter in the win.
St Mary shot 34% (17-50) from the field overall, 25% (7-28) from three-point area, and 69% (11-16) from the free-throw line. Estelline/Hendricks shot 31% (14-45) in the game, 27% (4-15) on three-point attempts, and 60% (6-10) from the free-throw line.
Brianna Griffin had 15 points, five rebounds, and two assists. Addison Libis added 13 points, four rebounds, and two assists. Jenna Miller finished with eight points, five rebounds, and three steals. Maddyn LeBrun had six points and six rebounds. Sierra Klein had five points, four rebounds, two assists, and two steals.
