Big Day From Maddyn Lebrun Boosts Lady Cards to a Win

It was a big day for Maddyn Lebrun in the Lady Cards opener. The Sophomore finished with 17 points and 15 rebounds in the win. The season after their appearance in the state tournament, the Cardinal girls look for new offensive sources. They did just that Friday night in Howard when three girls scored in double figures.

The Cardinal starting lineup would feature two seniors, Madelyn Klein and Stephenie Geraets. Beside these seniors was Sophia McNaughton, a junior, Maddyn Lebrun, a sophomore, and Layla Hanson, an 8th grader. In addition to the starting five, other girls getting time were Reagan Griffin, Madalyn Lavoy, Harper Werdel, Lucy Vargas, Kate Liebl, and Lauryn Lebrun.

First Half

In the first quarter, M Lebrun scored the first 8 Cardinal points. Geraets grabbed a steal which led her to an easy fast-break layup. 10 points, though, was all the Lady Cards would score in the first. In what looked to be the makings of an unquestionably defensive match, it was 10-7 after a quarter.

M Lebrun started off the scoring for St Mary’s in the second quarter, following after was a McNaughton three pointer. Another bucket from McNaughton and a free throw from L Lebrun ended the scoring for the Lady Cards, making it 18-20 in favor of Howard.

Second Half

The same starting five that started the game would start out the second half. Geraets got the scoring started off, then free throws from Geraets and McNaughton knotted the score at 23. M Lebrun would score next, next up was Geraets on an and-1 finish. Geraets notched another steal and found Lavoy who scored on the fast break bucket. Following a McNaughton three-pointer, Hanson would score inside. That would finish off the third quarter, St Mary’s leading 35-33.

Geraets started things off in the fourth quarter with a steal and a fast break layup. Geraets would be fouled on her next shot attempt, making both free throws, immediately following, Geraets would score again. Following another McNaughton three, M Lebrun scored on the inside, making for an 11 point lead. M Lebrun hit another shot before Howard would start fouling. The game would finish 52-37, as the Cardinal girls take home the win.

M Lebrun led in scoring with 17, following closely behind was Geraets with 15 and McNaughton with 12. Hanson had 3 while Lavoy and Werdel finished with 2. L Lebrun added a point. M Lebrun led with 15 rebounds in addition to 6 from McNaughton, 3 from Hanson, and 2 from Geraets. L Lebrun, Lavoy, and Werdel each had a rebound. Geraets finished the game with 8 steals while Werdel and M Lebrun each had 3. In addition, Hanson had 2 and McNaughton, Vargas, and Lavoy each added steals.

After the big day from Maddyn Lebrun boosting the Lady Cards to a 52-37 win over Howard, St Mary’s will travel to play the Colman-Egan Hawks in Colman next Thursday. That game will be on Big Sioux Media at https://www.youtube.com/@BigSiouxMedia/streams.
