St Mary Falls in Tough Battle to Cougars

Both teams held leads in the game, but the Viborg-Hurley Cougars came away with a 43-41 win over the St Mary Cardinals on Saturday, February 8th.

Viborg-Hurley held a 6-2 lead with 2:30 to play in the opening quarter.  The first quarter ended with the Cougars leading 8-6.  The second quarter ended with the Viborg-Hurley Cougars leading 21-20.  St Mary started the third quarter on a 6-3 run for a 26-24 lead.  The Cougars responded with a 9-0 run to back in front 33-26.  St Mary scored five points in the final seconds of the third quarter, and Viborg-Hurley led 36-34 going into the fourth quarter.

The Cardinals scored the first two points of the final quarter to tie the game 36-36 with 6:15 to play.  After St Mary took a 38-36 lead, the Cougars made a three-point shot to go back in front 39-38 at the 3:45 mark.  The Cardinals went back ahead 41-40 with 1:00 to play.  Viborg-Hurley made a field goal and free-throw to take a 43-41 lead.  St Mary had a good look at a game-winning three-point shot, and also on an offensive rebound put back, but both shots fell away no good.

Jenna Miller had 24 points and seven rebounds.  Madala Hanson ended with nine points, three assists, and three steals.  Brianna Griffin had four points and three rebounds.  Stephenie Geraets added two points and seven rebounds.  Maddyn LeBrun had seven rebounds.
