St Mary Football Suffers First Loss of Season

The St Mary Cardinal football team suffered their first loss of the season on Friday, October 11th.  The Alcester-Hudson Cubs held off a rally by the Cardinals for a 28-22 win.

The Cubs scored first on a one-yard touchdown run in the opening quarter to give them a 6-0 lead.  They added a five-yard run in the second quarter to make the score 12-0.  St Mary got a 68-yard touchdown pass from Trimmier Hanson to Keaton Hansen, and then a two-point conversion run by Hanson to cut the lead to 12-8.  Alcester-Hudson would add a three-yard touchdown run and two point conversion to increase the lead to 20-8.  The Cubs also had a punt return for a touchdown and then made a two-point conversion late in the second quarter.  Alcester-Hudson led 28-8 at halftime.

Neither team would score in the third quarter.  St Mary put together a rally in the fourth quarter.  Hanson had a six-yard touchdown run to cut the lead in half, 28-14.  Later in the quarter, Hanson threw an 18-yard touchdown pass to Lincoln LeBrun, and the two-point conversion was made by Hansoon to make the score 28-22, but the Cardinals ran out of time to complete the comeback.

The Cardinals finished with 274 yards of total offense, 90 rushing yards and 184 passing yards.  Alcester-Hudson finished with 201 yards of total offense, 152 rushing yards and 49 passing yards.  LeBrun had 17 carries for 56 yards.  Hanson ended with 13 carries for 23 yards and a touchdown.  Hanson was also 9-16 passing for 184 yards with two touchdowns and an interception.  Maverick LeBrun had four catches for 69 yards.  Hansen had a touchdown catch of 68 yards.

Hansen also led the defense with 10.5 tackles.  L. LeBrun had nine tackles and a forced fumble.  Alex Lindeman added seven tackles.  M.LeBrun had 6.5 tackles and a fumble recovery.  Jake Kopsas ended with 6.5 tackles.  Thomas LaVory had four tackles and a fumble recovery.

“It was a tough game.  Alcester-Hudson is a good team.  We played better in the second half and can hopefully build on that,” said head coach Ross Flemmer.
