Cardinal Volleyball Suffers First Loss of Season

The Dell Rapids St Mary volleyball team fell from the ranks of the unbeaten on Tuesday, September 17th.  The Cardinals hosted the Sioux Falls Lutheran Eagles, and the Eagles won in four sets.

St Mary started fast with a 5-1 run in the opening set.  The Eagles responded with an 8-2 run to take a 9-7 lead.  That lead grew to 16-11.  The Cardinals were within four points, 20-16, but the Eagles finished the first set with a 5-3 run for a 25-19 win.  St Mary opened the second set with a 3-1 run.  Sioux Falls Lutheran tied the score, 3-3, and then went ahead 9-5.  They extended their lead to 20-12 and finished with a 25-19 win.

After a 3-3 tie to start the third set, the Eagles went on a 7-0 run for a 10-3 lead.  They continued to lead 15-8, but St Mary then went on a big run.  The Cardinals went on an 8-2 run to pull within a point, 17-16.  St Mary eventually tied the score 20-20.  Then they finished the third set on a 5-2 run for a 25-22 win to force a fourth set.  The Eagles started the fourth set on a 3-0 run only to have the Cardinals respond with three straight to tie the score 3-3.  The teams went back and forth and remained tied 10-10.  Sioux Falls Lutheran took a 15-11 lead.  The Cardinals got within a point, 15-14, but the Eagles were able to hold their lead.  They extended their lead to 22-17 before winning the set 25-19 to win the match.
