The Dell Rapids St Mary Cardinal volleyball team bounced back into the win column with a four-set win over the Deubrook Dolphins at home on Thursday, September 19th. The Cardinals won the match by set scores of 28-30, 25-20, 25-23, and 25-12.
The two teams were pretty evenly matched, and three of the four set scores indicated as such. The Cardinals started the match with a 4-1 run. Deubrook was able to get the score tied 8-8. After the Dolphins took a 12-11 lead, St Mary went on a 6-1 run for a 17-13 lead. The Cardinals led 23-20, but the Dolphins rallied to tie the score 23-23. The two teams traded points back and forth to ties of 24-24, 25-25, 26-26, 27-27, and 28-28. The Dolphins gained a 29-28 advantage and then scored the winning point for a 30-28 final score.
St Mary took an early 4-3 lead to start the second set. They led 6-5 before extended the lead to 11-7. The lead grew to five points, 17-12, but Deubrook rallied to pull within a point, 20-19. The Cardinals shut down the rally this time and finished the set on a 5-1 run to win 25-20. The third set featured leads by both teams. After a 1-1 tie to start, St Mary went ahead 5-2 and pushed the lead to 11-5. The Dolphins rallied to tie the score 15-15. They then took the lead 19-17 and continued to lead 21-19. The Cardinals then tied the score 22-22 and finished the set with a 3-1 lead for a 25-23 win.
St Mary used the momentum from the late rally in the third set to get out to a 6-2 lead to start the fourth set. The Cardinals extended their lead to 12-5 and kept rolling from there. St Mary led 18-8 and 19-11 before finishing the match on a 6-1 run for a 25-12 win.
