Big Third Quarter Lifts Cardinal Boys to Win

The Dell Rapids St Mary Cardinal boys scored 23 points in the third quarter, almost equalling their first half total, to help them to a 71-57 win over the Deubrook Dolphins on Tuesday, January 24th.

The Cardinals trailed for almost the entire game, except for the first couple of minutes of the first quarter.  St Mary led 14-9 at the end of the first quarter.  They built a 10-point lead in the second quarter only to see the Dolphins cut the lead to three points, 22-19.  Maverick LeBrun hit two three-point shots right before halftime to give St Mary a 28-19 lead.

St Mary’s offense got going in the third quarter.  They outscored Deubrook 23-13 in the quarter to build a 51-32 lead heading into the fourth quarter.  The Dolphins were able to chip into the lead and cut the deficit down to single digits, 66-57, with 1:45 to play.  St Mary was able to stop the rally there and end the game on a 5-0 run.

The Cardinals shot 40% (21-52) from the field, 45% (10-22) on three-point attempts, and 79% (19-24) from the free-throw line.  Deubrook finished the game shooting 44% (23-52), 30% (6-20) on three-point shots, and 5-6 from the free-throw line.

LeBrun finished with 25 points and three rebounds.  Nic Gaspar had 23 points, eight rebounds, and three assists.  CJ Smith had 11 points, three rebounds, and two assists.  Trevon Beckman also had 11 points with seven rebounds, four steals, and two assists.  Trimmier Hanson had five assists and three rebounds.
