St Mary Defense Locks Down Cubs in Second Half

The Dell Rapids St Mary Cardinal (9-2) defense held the Alcester-Hudson Cubs to just 14 total points in the second half in their way 75-38 boys basketball win on Friday, January 27th.

The Cardinals slowly built their lead in the first half before blowing the game open in the second half.  St Mary led 19-13 at the end of the first quarter and 40-24 at halftime.  It was the third quarter that put the game out of reach.  St Mary outscored the Cubs 23-6 in the quarter for a 63-32 lead going into the fourth.

The Cardinals shot 51% (26-51) overall in the game, 41% (11-27) from three-point area, and 63% (12-19) from the free-throw line.  The Cubs shot 35% (16-46) from the field, 1-7 on three-point attempts, and 5-10 from the free-throw line.  St Mary forced 17 turnovers and scored 24 points off those turnovers.

Four players finished in double figures.  Nic Gaspar had 20 points, six rebounds, three assists, and two steals.  Trevon Beckman had 16 points, six rebounds, and six assists.  Maverick LeBrun added 13 points, three rebounds, and three steals.  CJ Smith ended with 11 points, four rebounds, and four assists.  Trimmier Hanson had five points, four assists, and three rebounds.
