Cardinal Boys Shake off Slow Start and Get Win in Chester

The Dell Rapids St Mary Cardinals got off to a bit of a slow start, but rallied in the second half for a 62-53 win over the Chester Flyers on Thursday, January 19th.

Chester got out to a 10-0 run to start the game and led the entire first half.  The Flyers were ahead 16-9 at the end of the first quarter.  St Mary pulled within two points, 18-16, early in the second quarter, but the Flyers then went on an 8-0 run to get the lead back to 10 points.  Chester led 27-21 at halftime.

St Mary’s offense got rolling about the midpoint of the third quarter.  The Cardinals outscored Chester 19-10 for a 40-37 lead heading into the fourth quarter.  St Mary maintained their lead until about a minute left in the game when Chester tied the game 53-53.  Trevon Beckman made a three-pointer to put the Cardinals ahead 56-53.  St Mary then made six free throws in the final :45 of the game to seal the win.

The Cardinals shot 48% (21-44) overall in the game, 42% (10-24) on three-point attempts, and 56% (10-18) from the free-throw line.  Chester was 43% (16-37) from the field, 32% (8-25) from three-point area, and 72% (13-18) from the free-throw line.

Beckman finished with 22 points, seven rebounds, three steals, and two assists.  Nic Gaspar had 17 points and seven rebounds.  Trimmier Hanson added 11 points, three rebounds, three steals, and two assists.  Maverick LeBrun ended with 10 points and three rebounds.  CJ Smith had two points, three rebounds, and six assists.
