Cardinals Win Straight-Set Match over Hawks

The Dell Rapids St Mary Cardinals won an exciting three-set match over the Canistota Hawks at home on Thursday, September 8th.  The Cardinals won by scores of 25-16, 25-19, and 25-23.

Canistota had a five-point lead, 11-6, in the opening set.  The Cardinals then went on a 10-3 run for a 16-14 lead.  That momentum carried St Mary to the 25-16 opening set win.  The Cardinals continued their run into the start of the second set.  St Mary went ahead 7-3.  The Hawks, however, tied the score 11-11.  St Mary went ahead again 16-12 only to see Canistota tie it again 19-19.  The Cardinals then scored the next six points for a 25-19 win.

The Hawks opened the third set with a 9-4 lead and then pushed that lead to 15-8.  They continued to lead 18-12 before St Mary went in a 9-2 run for a 21-20 lead.  The score was then tied 21-21 and 22-22.  The Cardinals finished the third set on a 3-1 advantage to win the set 25-23 and the match.

Ella Griffin had a team-high 11 kills along with two ace serves.  Maya Heinitz had 10 kills, 14 digs, and an ace serve.  Brianna Griffin added five kills.  Brianna Lindeman finished with 29 set assists and two blocks.  Jaycee Tebay finished with four blocks, and Megan Geraets had two.  Josie Baumberger had 14 digs.  Madala Hanson finished with eight digs and two ace serves.

St Mary will play three matches at home next week.  They will host Sioux Falls Lutheran on Monday, September 12th, Flandreau Indian School on the 13th, and then Deubrook on the 15th.
