The Dell Rapids St Mary Cardinal volleyball team had their first home match of the 2022 season on Tuesday, August 30th. The Cardinals hosted the Oldham-Ramona/Rutland Raiders, and the Raiders got the 3-1 win by scores of 30-28, 22-25, 25-22, and 26-24.
Set 1: Raiders 30, Cardinals 28
The entire match was back and forth all night long. The Raiders took an early 7-4 lead in the opening set. The Cardinals went on an 8-0 run for a 12-7 lead. ORR got the score tied 14-14 and then went ahead 18-14. St Mary battled to tie the score 22-22. The two teams then went back-and-forth trading points and advantages. St Mary held a 28-27 lead, but the Raiders scored three in a row to take the first set.
Set 2: Cardinals 25, Raiders 22
The second set continued to be a close battle to start. The teams traded points, and the score was tied 6-6. The Cardinals then went on a 7-1 run to build a 13-6 lead. The Raiders were never able to get closer than three points, and the Cardinals won the second set 25-22.
Set 3: Raiders 25, Cardinals 22
Again the start of the third set was back-and-forth as the score was tied 7-7. The Cardinals scored the next three points for a small 10-7 lead. The lead grew to 15-11 before the Raiders went on a run. ORR got the score tied at 17-17, and they then went ahead 22-18. St Mary pulled within a point at 23-22, but ORR scored the final two points to win the set.
Set 4: Raiders 26, Cardinals 24
St Mary looked to be headed towards forcing a fifth set. After the Cardinals led 11-10, they pushed their lead to 16-11. The Raiders closed the gap to one, 17-16 after a 5-1 scoring run. St Mary pushed the lead back to five points, 23-18, and also was at set-point, 24-21. The Raiders, however, went on a 5-0 run and stole the fourth set 26-24 to win the match.
Ella Griffin finished with 11 kills, six digs, and two ace serves. Maya Heinitz had 10 kills, 11 digs, and five aces. Brianna Griffin added nine kills, five digs, a block, and an ace serve. Jaycee Tebay had seven kills and three blocks. Brianna Lindeman finished with 32 set assists, eight digs, and three ace serves. Josie Baumberger had a team-high 25 digs along with an ace. Madala Hanson finished with 11 digs and two ace serves. Whitney Warwick also had 10 digs.
