Canton Rushes Past Tri-Valley

The Canton C-Hawks gained 287 yards of offense, 246 of those on the ground, on their way to a 34-14 victory over the Tri-Valley Mustangs on Friday, October 9th.

Tri-Valley had the early lead in the first quarter.  After an interception, the Mustangs got on the board after a Mason Mathieu touchdown pass to Levi Hanson.  The two-point conversion was good on a pass from Mathieu to Owen Besmer to give the Mustangs an 8-0 lead at the end of the first quarter.

Canton then put together two big quarters in the middle of the game.  The C-Hawks scored two times in the second quarter to take a 14-8 lead at halftime.  They also scored the first touchdown of the third quarter and held a 20-8 lead.  The Mustangs pulled within six points after a Hanson rushing touchdown in the third quarter at 20-14, but Canton scored the final two touchdowns of the game, one in the third quarter and one in the fourth quarter, for the 34-14 win.

Hanson finished with 11 carries for 36 yards and a touchdown.  He also had two catches for 75 yards and a touchdown.  Mathieu was 3-8 passing for 79 yards and a touchdown.  Besmer had four carries for 18 yards, and Jaden Siemonsma had five carries for 10 yards.

Tri-Valley (2-4) will host the Huron Tigers on Friday, October 16th.

Peters and Hargreaves Run in Conference Meet

Brie Peters, Nate Hargreaves, and the Tri-Valley Mustang cross country team ran in the Dak-12 Conference meet on Thursday, October 8th in Madison.

Peters had a 14th place finish in the race with a time of 22:14.07.  Hargreaves had an 11th place finish in the varsity race with a time of 18:18.57.

For the girls JV team, Zoey Dissing placed fourth with a time of 18:30.20.  Savanna King placed 19th with a time of 20:46.74.  On the JV boys team, Matthew Mares was 24th in a time of 16:47.63.  Teagin Gacke was 27th at 17:03.95.  Camden Raastad placed 46th with a time of 18:57.31

This was the final meet before the Region 2A race.  Regions will be held on Thursday, October 15th in Sioux Falls.

Mustangs End Skid in Elk Point

The Tri-Valley Mustang volleyball team was able to end a five-match losing streak on Thursday, October 8th.  Tri-Valley traveled to Elk Point to play the Elk Point-Jefferson Huskies.  The Mustangs came home with a 3-1 match victory.

The entire match was close between the two teams.  The Huskies took the first set by a score of 27-25.  Tri-Valley then took the next three sets of the match.  The Mustangs won the second set 25-17 and then won sets three and four by the same score of 25-22.

Jessica Masgai had a team-high 13 kills.  Blayne Gacke finished with 10 kills.  Gacke also led the team in digs with 20.  Hannah West finished with 11 digs.  Abbie Weinacht had three blocks, while Tabor Teel had two.  Grace Schildhauer finished with 12 set assists.  Teel also finished with two ace serves.

Tri-Valley (6-7) will travel to Lennox on Monday, October 12th, and then to Sioux Falls Christian on Tuesday, October 13th.

Chester Hands Tri-Valley Home Loss

The Tri-Valley Mustangs lost to a tough Chester Flyers team on Tuesday, October 6th at home.  The Flyers took the match in straight sets.

Chester got on a roll in the first set of the match and took the win 25-11.  The second set was much closer, but the Flyers took a 2-0 lead with a 25-22 win in the second set.  The Flyers continued the momentum and won the third set 25-14.

Kaitlyn Mohnen finished the night with eight digs and one ace serve.  Hannah West had five digs.  Abbie Weinacht had four solo and seven assisted blocks, four kills, and three ace serves.  Blayne Gacke had a team-high six kills.  Jessica Masgai had 10 assisted blocks and two solo blocks.  Grace Schildhauer finished with 12 set assists, and Brookelyn Stieben added six set assists.

Tri-Valley (5-7) will look to get back into the win column when they travel to Elk Point to play the Elk Point-Jefferson Huskies on Thursday, October 8th.

Tri-Valley Cross Country Runs Well at Howard

The Tri-Valley Mustang cross country team had a great day in Howard on Monday, October 5th.  The Mustangs participated in the Howard Invitational.

Both Brie Peters and Nate Hargreaves had great days.  Peters and Hargreaves both had 2nd place finishes in the varsity race.

The Mustang JV girls team also had a great day.  The team placed first and all four runners had top 20 finishes.  Zoey Dissing won the race.  Savanna King was 2nd.  Gwen Peters placed eighth, and Elizabeth Dahl was 15th.

The Mustangs will be at the Dak-12 Conference meet on Thursday, October 8th in Madison for their next meet.

Mustang Golf Team Finishes 15th at State

For the first time in school history, the entire Tri-Valley Mustang boys golf team qualified for the state tournament.  The Mustangs finished 15th at the 2020 South Dakota Class A Boys Golf State Tournament in Hot Springs on Monday, October 5th and Tuesday, October 6th.

Tri-Valley finished with a two-day team total of 772.  Sioux Falls Christian won the team title with a 649.  Chamberlain was second with 671, and Tea Area placed third at 686.

Josh Leiseth finished 26th with a two-day total of 172 (86, 86).  Braeden Miller had a 36th place finish after a two-day total of 178 (93, 85).  Lance DeWitt placed 87th with a 210 (98, 112).  Cole Focken was 90th with a total of 212 (105, 107).  Riley Carlson placed 97th with a two-day total of 232 (115, 117).

Mustang Defense Shines in Win over Sioux Falls Christian

The Tri-Valley Mustang defense was the star of the night in a 14-7 win over the Sioux Falls Christian Chargers on Friday, October 2nd at home.  The Mustang defense intercepted four passes and the seven points allowed was the fewest points given up in a game this season.

The Mustangs held the Chargers to 243 total yards, sixty rushing yards and 183 passing yards.  The Mustangs had a total of 169 yards of total offense, 140 rushing yards and 29 passing yards.

Isaac McFarland had seven carries for 48 yards and scored both touchdowns for the Mustangs.  Owen Besmer had nine carries for 21 yards.  Nick Hass had three carries for 21 yards, and Mason Mathieu had six carries for 20 yards.  Mathieu was also 3-6 passing for 29 yards and an interception.  Jaden Siemonsma had two catches for 13 yards, and Hass had a catch for 16 yards.

Tri-Valley (2-3) will travel to Canton on Friday, October 9th.

Cougars Best Mustangs on Volleyball Court

The Tri-Valley Mustangs fell at home to the McCook Central/Montrose Cougars on Thursday, October 1st.  The Cougars took the match in four sets.

McCook Central/Montrose started out fast and beat the Mustangs 25-11 to open up the match.  The Mustangs regrouped and took the second set by a score of 25-15.  The Cougars then took the next two sets by the same 25-19 score.

Abbie Weinacht had 11 kills and two ace serves in the match.  Blayne Gacke had five kills, two ace serves, and a block.  Hannah West and Grace Schildhauer both had 10 digs each.  Schildhauer also had 10 set assists.  Jessica Masgai had four solo blocks and six assisted blocks.  Brooklyn Stieben had a team-high 11 set assists.

Tri-Valley (5-6) will host Chester on Tuesday, October 6th.

Peters and Hargreaves Continue Strong Season in Lennox

Brie Peters and Nate Hargreaves continued their strong seasons for the Tri-Valley Mustang varsity cross country team on Thursday, October 1st.  The pair ran in the Lennox Oriole Invitational meet.

Peters finished eighth with a time of 20:12.91, which was less than a minute than the top spot of 19:39.59.  Hargreaves had a 14th place finish in a loaded boys division dominated by Sioux Falls Christian.  Hargreaves had a time of 17:32.18.

The next meet is in Howard on Monday, October 5th, and then the Dak-12 Conference meet on Thursday, October 8th in Madison.

Tri-Valley Falls in Five Sets to Baltic

The Tri-Valley Mustangs hosted the Baltic Bulldogs in a big Region 3A matchup on Monday, September 29th.  The Bulldogs were able to get the victory over the Mustangs in five sets.

Baltic took the first two sets by close scores.  The Bulldogs won the first set 25-21 and then won the second set 25-23.  Tri-Valley was able to win the next two sets to force the fifth and final set.  The Mustangs won the third and fourth sets by the same 25-15 score.  Baltic, however, prevailed in the fifth set and won by a score of 15-8 to win the match.

Blayne Gacke had a match-high 17 kills.  Jessica Masgai finished with 11 kills.  Brookelyn Stieben had 16 set assists, and Grace Schildhauer had 14 set assists.  Tabor Teel led the back-row defense with 17 digs.  Gacke added 13 digs.  Masgai and Abbie Weinacht both had two blocks each.  Gacke and Schildhauer each had three ace serves.

Tri-Valley (5-4) will host the McCook Central/Montrose Cougars on Thursday, October 1st.
