Cardinal Volleyball Loses “Battle of Cardinal” to Arlington

The Dell Rapids St Mary Cardinal volleyball team dropped a match to the Arlington Cardinals on Tuesday, September 2nd, in Arlington.  Arlington, ranked third in Class B volleyball, won the match in straight sets of 25-11, 25-20, 25-18.

Ally Mullaney had one ace, two kills, and a block in the match.  Jackie Wolles finished with three kills on the night, and Claudia Schwebach added two.  Lindsey Wolles had nine set assists for Dell Rapids St Mary.  Defensively Riley Wolles added a block, and Kaitlyn Vortherms ended the match with two digs.

St Mary drops to 1-5 on the year.  The Cardinals will host Castlewood on Thursday, September 4th, in their first home match of the season.  The match will be webcast on Big Sioux Media.

Quarrier Golf Team Wins Again

The Dell Rapids Quarrier boys golf team won again for the fourth time in a row on Tuesday, September 2nd.  The Quarriers finished first with a team score of 313 at the 12-team Sioux Falls Christian Invitational at Bakker’s Crossing.  Canton finished second with a team score of 324.

Adam Karst finished in first place at the tournament with a round of 74.  Ty Hoglund finished second just one shot behind with a round of 75.  Devon Weber placed seventh for the Quarriers with a 79.  Mason Schmidt finished the day with an 85, Josh Parrott shot an 88, and Jordan Kerns ended the day with a 94.

Dell Rapids will travel to Mitchell on Monday, September 8th, for the Parkston Invitational.

Quarrier Volleyball Team Loses Home-Opener

QuarriersThe Dell Rapids Quarrier volleyball team lost their first home match of the year to the Elk Point-Jefferson Huskies 14-25, 19-25, 23-25 on Tuesday, September 2nd.

The first game was back and forth through the first part of the game.  With the score tied 10-10, Elk Point-Jefferson went on a 7-3 run, and then closed out the first game on an 8-1 run for the 25-14 win.  The Huskies held an early 10-6 lead in the second game, but the Quarriers fought back and scored eight points in a row to take a 14-10 lead.  Dell Rapids held a 16-13 lead after both teams traded the next few points.  The Huskies tied the game at 16-16, and then again at 18-18.  From there Elk Point-Jefferson went on a 7-1 run to win the second game.  The Quarries had control of the third game for most of the first half.  They held a steady two-to-three point lead.  Already leading 13-10, Dell Rapids scored the next four points to extend their lead to 17-10.  The Quarriers were able to push the lead even higher to 22-14, looking to win the third game and extend the match, but the Huskies pulled to within a point at 22-21 after scoring seven points in a row.  Dell Rapids gained the next point to go ahead by two at 23-21, but it was the Huskies that would score the final four points for the match win.

Sarah Haak finished the match with eight service points and 10 assists.  Mara Adams had six kills for the Quarriers, while Tiffany Finkral added five.  Bailey Munk led the team defensively with 12 digs on the night.  Brittany Kludt finished with two blocks.

The Quarriers fall to 3-2 on the year, and will travel to Hartford to take on the West Central Trojans on Tuesday, September 9th.

JV Results:
The JV team lost to Elk Point-Jefferson two sets to one.  The offensive leaders for the Quarriers were Chloe Solberg, Trinity Gordon, Megan Miles, and Tiffanie Dorale.  The defensive leaders were Hannah Welbig and Sami Reider.

C-Team Results:
The C-Team won their match against the Huskies two sets to one.  The offensive leaders were Kenedy Mergen, Sara Van Regenmorter, and Tiffanie Dorale.  Arial Hoffman and Autumn Schumaker led the defense of the Quarriers.

Quarrier Cross Country Results in Salem

The Dell Rapids Quarrier Cross Country girls and boys teams traveled to Salem to run in the McCook Central/Montrose Invitational on Tuesday, September 2nd.  The girls team finished seventh with a total of 89 points.  Garretson won the meet with 15 points.  Mt. Vernon/Plankinton finished second with 18 points, and Ethan/Parkston was third with 33 points.  The boys team finished fifth with 44 points.  West Central won the event with 10 points. Garretson placed second with 12 points.  Flandreau was third with 38 points, and Ethan/Parkston was fourth with 40 points.

Bulldogs Spoil Home-Opener

LjunggrenCatch_8-29-14The Madison Bulldogs erased an 18-6 deficit to beat the Dell Rapids Quarriers 36-33 on Friday, August 29th, in the first football game of the year.  Dell Rapids scored on their very first drive of the ball game as Jase Nelson threw at 20-yeard touchdown pass to Beau Carpenter with 8:35 to go in the first quarter.  The Quarriers extended their lead to 12-0 after a 13-yard touchdown pass from Nelson to Tanner Ljunggren with 1:24 left in the quarter.  Madison cut the lead to 12-6 after a 40-yard touchdown run by Mitch Hansen with :55 left in the first.  Dell Rapids would add one more score in the first quarter as Nelson connected with Ljunggren for a 75-yard touchdown pass as time expired in the first quarter for an 18-6 lead.

The Bulldogs scored the only two touchdowns in the second quarter.  With 8:16 left in the first half, Brodie Frederiksen scored on a 1-yard touchdown run to cut the lead down to 18-13.  Isaac Shubert gave Madison their first lead of the game with 4:46 left in the half on a 2-yard touchdown run.  Madison held a 19-18 halftime lead.

Dell Rapids regained the lead early in the third quarter.  Casey Gleason blocked a Madison punt with 9:10 left in third quarter, and on the very next play, Keegan Hemenway put the Quarriers back in front with a 7-yard touchdown run at 26-19.  Madison would tie the game up at 26-26 after a 43-yard touchdown pass from Hansen to Carter Kasuske with 6:27 left to play in the third quarter.  After a Dell Rapids turnover, Mason Leighton scored on an 11-yard touchdown run to give Madison the lead back at 33-26.  The Bulldogs added to their lead with 7:09 left in the game on a 27-yard field goal by Brayden Gilbert.  Dell Rapids was able to cut the lead to 36-33 after a 5-yard touchdown pass from Nelson to Riley Schmidt, but the Quarriers were unable to recover the onside kick, and Madison hung on for the win.

Dell Rapids (0-1) will travel to Tea for their next game on Friday, September 12th.

Quarrier Volleyball Third at C-Hawk Invite

The Dell Rapids Quarrier volleyball team finished with a 3-1 record and third place at the C-Hawk Invitational Volleyball Tournament in Canton on Saturday, August 30th.

The Quarriers finished 2-1 in pool play.  Dell Rapids lost to Parker 20-25, 8-25, but picked up match wins over Canton 25-11, 25-9 and over Garretson 25-20, 25-9.  Dell Rapids then defeated Dak-12 foe West Central in the third place match 18-25, 10-25, 25-23, 25-15, 15-9.

The Quarriers are 3-1 on the season and will host the Elk Point-Jefferson Huskies on Tuesday, September 2nd.

Cardinal Volleyball 1-3 at Estelline Tournament

The Dell Rapids St Mary Cardinal volleyball team finished 1-3 at the Estelline Early Bird Tournament on Saturday, August 30th.  The Cardinals won their first match of pool play against Clark/Willow Lake 25-21, 25-22.  St Mary then lost their second pool play match to Wolsey/Wessington 23-25, 21-25.

After the pool play was completed, the Cardinals played two more matches in the “Silver” bracket of the tournament.  They lost their next match to Viborg/Hurley 18-25, 18-25, and lost their final match of the day to Estelline 21-25, 25-17, 14-25.

The Cardinals are now 1-4 on the season.  St Mary will travel to Arlington on Tuesday, September 2nd.

Quarriers Compete in Beresford Cross Country Invite

The Dell Rapids Quarriers girls and boys cross country teams competed in the Beresford Invite on Friday, August 29th.  The girls team finished seventh with a team score of  104.  Garretson won the girls event with 41 points.  Ipswich was second with 43 points, and Beresford was third with 45 points.  The Quarrier boys team finished fifth with a total 0f 75 points.  Sioux Falls Christian won the event with 37 points.  Lennox was second with 41 points, and Garretson finished third with 59 points.

Quarriers Earn 3rd Tourney Win

QuarriersThe Dell Rapids Quarriers boys golf team earned their third tournament win in as many tournaments on Monday, August 25th.  Playing in the Dell Rapids Tournament held at Rocky Run Golf Course, the Quarriers posted a team score of 306, 32 shots better than second place Madison. Parkston finished third also posting a team score of 338.  Sioux Valley was fourth at 339, and Canton finished fifth with a team score of 340.

Dell Rapids had four individuals earn medalist honors at the event.  Adam Karst finished first with a round of 71.  Ty Hoglund was one shot behind finishing second with a 72.  Mason Schmidt placed seventh with a final score of 80, and Devon Weber finished 10th with a round of 83.  Josh Parrott ended the day with an 85, and Jordan Kerns had a round of 92.

Dell Rapids will participate in the Sioux Falls Christian Invite on Thursday, August 28th, at Bakker’s Crossing Golf Course.

Quarriers Win First Meet of Year

QuarriersThe Dell Rapids Quarrier boys golf team won their first meet of the year on Monday, August 18th.  The Quarriers finished with a team score of 311 at the West Central Early Bird Invitational at Central Valley Golf Course in Hartford, SD.  Parkston finished second with a team score of 326, followed by Vermillion with 334, and Madison with 339.

Four of the six golfers for Dell Rapids placed in the top 15 of the event.  Devon Weber finished first with a round of 73.  Ty Hoglund finished third with a 78, Adam Karst shot a 79 for fifth place, and Mason Schmidt had an 81 for ninth place.  Josh Parrot had a round of 88, and Jordan Kerns finished the day with a 90.

The Quarriers will be in action again on Thursday, August 21st, at the Dakota Valley Invite held at Two Rivers Golf Course.
